Roshele Bolanos 1st hour Honors English 10 Oct. 11, 2016 Animal Cruelty Animal testing is used to protect the health of humans. Everyday there are millions of people that wake up, not only to get on their daily schedule, but to apply makeup. There are over thousands of makeup brands like Mary Kay, Too Faced, Tarte, Covergirl, Anastasia, and many others. Some brands are well known for being cruelty free and vegan free. There are also some brands for example, Kylie Cosmetics, that are dangerous and very threatening to animals. Not only is there animal testing, but there is another subject; animal cruelty. Animal abuse is increasing to really high extents. Animal cruelty is global but going on in places like the Netherlands, Greece, Romania,
The testing of animals is rising from pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies because the companies are spending billions of dollars on animals testing in order to make products safer to humans. Test animals are also treated poorly and, because of how they are treated, the animals begin to act differently. The substances cosmetics companies inject into animals are very harmful and torturous to animals, so most animals end up dying or being severely handicapped from then on. Most of the findings and conclusions from animal experimentation do not end up working the same way with humans. Enormous amounts of money are spent on animal testing each year when there are better ways to put the investments for better benefit for our country. Advancements in technology should be used to speed up and improve the process of developing cures for humans instead of continuing to torture innocent creatures. Although animal testing is still being used, the European Union has banned it completely. There are many alternative ways that are in the process of being made but ultimately we need an alternative method that bans animal testing completely.
Animal abuse is described generally as any act or omission that causes unnecessary or unreasonable harm to an animal. Animal abuse are vary and can lead to different forms. These may include, tormenting or beating an animal, executing an animal in a harsh way, binding or transporting an animal in a way that is improper for its welfare, neglecting to give fitting living conditions, neglecting to give proper or satisfactory sustenance or water for an animal and neglecting to give suitable treatment to infection or injury (Animal Cruelty, n.d.). In general, for an act to be considered as animal cruelty, it must be a non-accidental, socially unacceptable, enacted on a vertebrate animal, causing pain, suffering and distress or death. (Battle, 2013).
Animal cruelty occurs all over the world. The human race has a major effect on the natural world, especially animals. Animal cruelty is an example of how man has taken advantage of his power. Those exhibiting cruelty towards animals have been proven to have a tendency to harbor violent psychological problems. Animal cruelty occurs all over the world. Fortunately, many countries have enacted laws and penalties to stop this harsh behavior.
Animals are used today for many sources of protection, food, clothing, transportation, sports, entertainment, and labor, but millions of these animals die each year from abuse. “Most of the reasons that people give for denying animals rights are: animals do not have souls, god gave humans dominion over the animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, animals do not reason, think, or feel pain like humans do, animals are a natural resource to used as humans see fit, and animals kill each other” (Evans). It all started in the nineteenth century, when people began abusing animals by beating them, feeding them poorly, providing them with no shelter or poor shelter, left to die if they were sick or old, or by cruel sports. Most of the organized efforts to improve human treatment of animals all started in England. Around the 1800s, there was signs of rising concern for animal welfare in the United States.
The definition of animal testing is tests performed on animals that help to advance scientific research and medicinal development. What is animal testing exactly? This definitely displays that animal tests is only carried out with good intent, as well as not to lead to haphazard harm on animals, some animal tests is performed to better researchers knowledge on the subjects of human and animal behavior, development, and biological functions; this is called basic or fundamental research . And some of animal tests help scientists to understand diseases and enhances them to develop cures and treatments for them; this is called targeted or applied research. And few numbers of tests are undergone to test the safety of everyday products such as body lotion and deodorant;
Perfume. Make-up. Baking Soda. Sunscreen. Toothpaste. Soap. People use these products everyday completely unaware of the harm caused towards animals for you to have that product in your hands. Animal Testing is unjustified, brutal. Animal Testing tortures innocent animals every single day. I believe that animals should be given the same moral consideration as humans. Animal testing can provide false results and causes suffering and pain. It is cruel for animals to be exposed to harmful experiments and live in restricting isolated conditions as it would be for humans too. Each year, over two hundred million innocent animals are injured or killed in laboratory experiments all over the world. Of those animals, between seventeen and twenty million are used in the United States. Animals are a crucial part of society, they are our pets, our companions, our best friends. If we continue treating them as we do, what will that say about us as humans. That we have no guilt killing and injuring animals
Should animals have to go through pain and suffering? Should they have to go without food and/or water? The answer is no. Animal abuse happens everyday and it happens because people are barbarous or because they don’t know how to take the best care of an animal that they have. Whatever the reason it’s still not right and will never be okay. This paper will cover a brief history of animal abuse, the statistics, the signs of animal abuse, and what can be done to stop animal abuse. Animal abuse needs to end for the animals that can’t speak for themselves.
Testing cosmetics on animals is a very controversial issue that has grown over the past years. I believe that cosmetic animal testing is wrong and should be banned because it is cruel, inaccurate, not very reliable, and has been proven to be unnecessary. Approximately 200,000 animals will suffer and die every year for cosmetics around the world. We as a whole have all decided that this is not necessary which is why we stopped making testing on animal cosmetics something that had to be done. Companies still continue to do it. Not only do you have the power to speak up for what you believe in, you can also start to vote with your dollar. Stop and look at your cosmetics to understand where you are voting.
Animal testing has continued to be used throughout the makeup industry, with over 200 main stream brands actively testing on animals (PeTA, 2012). Some of which include prestigious brands such as Clinique, Elizabeth Arden and Lancôme. The need for change comes as animals are continuously being exploited by these large companies.
An argument people have who are for animal testing in the cosmetics industry is that it helps humans survive and avoid suffering from poorly tested cosmetics. But if people are not to be subjected to these testing and experimentation methods, why are animals? Animal experimentation has been around since the early 3rd century BCE. Back then doctors would cut open and examine the insides of animals before then doing the same to humans (beauty sparkle). The animals frequently used are rodents, dogs, cats, monkeys, even fish and sheep (Beck). The bottom line is animal experimentation and testing in the cosmetic industry for human benefits should be banned everywhere in the U.S, and eventually the world due to the harsh and cruel nature of the testing methods, the stressful environments the animals are kept in during the research, and the fact that the results obtained from animals can be radically different from results obtained from humans.
Animal testing has long played a part in the science of testing, and it still plays a very important role in the medical world. Testing on animals in order to create a cure for AIDS is one thing, but testing on animals for human vanity is another. Animal testing is used to test the safety of a product. It has kept some very unsafe substances out of the cosmetic world. However, in this day in age, animal testing is not the only way to test the safety of a product. Animal testing in cosmetics has decreased over the years. However, it is still used by many companies in America. Animal testing is not only cruel, but it is also unnecessary in today’s advanced scientific world.
Animal testing is cruel and unnecessary especially for cosmetic use. There is over a thousand ingredients that have been mark as safe for humans so there is no reason for animal testing. There are many alternatives for animal testing that are cheaper and give valid results, there are places like Europe that have ban animal testing and doesn’t not buy cosmetics from other places if they have been tested on animals. Since is not legally required to test cosmetics on animals, cosmetics companies have a choice to choose, but usually choose to experiment on animals. Many animals have dies or are seriously injured for the cause of animal testing and some animals that have been born in the labs haven’t even seen daylight in their life. There has been many reports of animal cruelty in these lab and some have been shut down for that reason. If there is many animals in this world that are being extinct, why speed up the process with other species by using them as experiments and killing
According to what I have written before, animal testing’s results are unreliable, so people should start to use the alternative methods which are more similar to human. For example, like makeup, there are cheaper methods, such as artificial skin, that can be used in experiment rather than harming animals. For example, one of the alternatives for us to use today instead of animal testing is human skin cell. This cell can react to humans’ natural allergic responses. These kind of humane alternatives are available for people, and they have become more and more accurate as technologies improved. I think people should choose a more effective way to test their products, and in order to that, they have to give up animal
Animal Cruelty has many forms, many reasons and most importantly many victims. It is a growing problem in today’s society. Many people may wonder why people abuse animals. The thought is simple, however the answer is a little more complex, there are three main types of animal cruelty. The three reasons are as follows: unintentional, intentional, and cruel intentions. I will discuss each one in more detail.
Millions animals are being tested for medical researches and cosmetics. As animals are being locked away behind bars in cold laboratories in order to test make-up products and medicines. Most cosmetics and medical companies are using animals to test and make sure that their products do not cause allergies. Furthermore, some counties are not only allowing animal testing but they are also demanding it. For example, China would never allow a product to be used on humans unless it has been tested on animals beforehand. While on the other hand, other counties like India are actually banning animal testing for beauty products. Nevertheless, it is argued that animal testing should not be legalized because it is cruel to make animals suffer just to get new beauty products, and also the fact that there are new non-animal research methods to test beauty products and medicine.
