Did you know that Japan has one of the world’s best educated populations? In this essay I will be speaking about the cross culture differences between two countries, mainly educational differences. The two fascinating, but immensely different countries that I will be speaking about is Japan and Italy. Japan’s culture grabbed my attention because knowing how strict and smart people are from there and how they take education serious really interested me. With the Italian culture their family unity is very close knit, and in Italy their arts, religion, and food is extremely important. School years run from Mid-September to the end of June. School hours can vary from region to region and can be full or half-days. The main subjects taught in the system include English, Italian, Mathematics, Biology, Geology, History, Geography, Social Studies, Physical Education and Visual and Musical Arts (Maps of World). They are raised to learn throughout their whole lives without any free time to do anything else, as to the United States and Italy they do not have such strict rules. The people living in Italy I believe would not be able to adjust easily to the high educational values that Japan has. In Italy and in the U.S. we go to college to earn a certain degree in a job we want to go for and start a career. In Japan they study since they are younger about different things all the way until they get older. Japan would definitely not accept Italy’s educational practices or systems, especially since Japan is all about following certain rules, not only in school but outside of school as well. I would think that some of Japan’s practices would greatly affect school systems in the United States and Italy in a good way. There would probably more literacy and less drop-out

Western influence played a significant role in the downfall of the Shogunate. The arrival of Commodore Matthew Perry in 1853 and the signing of the ‘unequal treaties’ lead to further discontent in Japan’s Feudal Structure and rebellions against the government. Although in the lead up to the arrival of Perry, there were already problems within the Feudal structure of Japan, it was the response of the Shogunate to Western influence that ultimately lead to an alliance, which sped up the downfall of the Shogunate.
This was about three decades after the Shogunate government, which was a reign that was responsible for protectionists, had collapsed. A lot of Japanese people were embarrassed by the huge change but soon rose up to create a “strong” country like European nations. My school’s founder, Jinzo Naruse, was one of the people who rose up. Naruse, as a pioneer, thought that women’s education was important in order for Japan to become a powerful nation. Women are the people who raise up their children, some of whom might become the future leaders of the country. Therefore, he decided to create the education system to have educated mothers. Before Naruse established the first women’s educational system in Japan, he visited the United States, a country with a strong women’s education system he wished to model. As I read Kimmel’s article, I felt the United States was truly developed in women’s education because many feminist supporters had already started their movement even before 1900s. Feudal Japan and Europe had similarities and differences. They both had their own warriors that followed a certain code of rules. The also both had peasants that had no power. They had different topographies and religions. Japan’s religions were their traditional religion Shinto, Confucianism, and two forms Buddhism Pure Land Buddhism. The Europeans believed in Christianity. Lastly, Japan is an isolated island, but Europe isn’t isolated nor an island. Feudal Japan and Feudal Europe were both sort of the same, but had some differences.

Until the 1860s it had possessed a social and economic structure more akin to that of feudal, rather than twentieth century, Europe. By the 1990s, the positions were almost reversed. This paper sets out to examine the contrasting democratic political systems of the two nations and to explore the social and democratic consequences of the changes that have occurred.
Although Japan did offer universal education, the curriculum was segregated and gender-specific. Not only was the role of women in public life harshly suppressed, but laws were made to forbid women from joining political parties and meetings. Constitutions and civil codes gave no political rights to women and instead gave full authority to the male head of the family. Women in the Ottoman Empire experienced greater opportunities because the reform-minded class that emerged in the Tanzimat era believed that the development and teaching of women helped strengthen the state. Male reformers of Japan, on the other hand, still believed women’s roles lay in the context of family life.

Japan is a large island off to the east of China it is a great country that has a rich culture. The Japanese religion is based off of two main beliefs, the belief in Shinto and Buddhism many Japanese people believe consider themselves both. The Japanese people were known to be around as early as 4,500 B.C. They have constructed their government style to a constitutional monarchy where they do in fact have an emperor, but he has limited power within the country. The main power of the country is held by the Prime Minister of Japan. Japan is made up of many islands that extend along the Pacific coast of Asia. The land area is made up of a lot of forest and mountainous area that cannot be used for agricultural, industrial or residential use. Japan also has one of the largest and growing economies in the world. They are growing every day and it is all because the people of Japan work very hard in order for their economy to flourish as it has.
These Japanese children definitely have a competitive educational edge over a lot of the world. Although they are oftentimes pressured into their studies, they come out on top and have learned a great deal. And most of the children actually want an education. They are not just at school because they have to be. Senior High schools have over 90% admission rate to Colleges and Universities. Once they attain the College-level status, a lot of students describe it as a walk in the park in comparison to their previous years of education. These years of education allow them to become a major educated force to be reckoned with.
