From Kindergarten to 12th grade, children spend most of their time at school. School, what we adults think, is supposed to be the teachers of our children while we are at work. They feed them lunch, and possibly breakfast, five days out the week, keep them active, and teach them all about their body and health in health class. But, are they really taking care of them enough? Some schools fail to serve healthy foods, teach health class, or even provide enough time to be physically active. One in three kids are obese, that is reason enough to care about these children’s lives at school. Schools are one of the reasons that the younger generation has a fast growing obese rate.
According to the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, they have assessed the nation’s health system annually since 2003, reported that, in 2015 the health care delivery system has made progress to achieve the three aims of better care, smarter spending, and healthier people (City of White Plains Health Equity Report, 2017). But most importantly aiming to reduce or eliminate racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic health
The health of the American people lags behind those from other developed countries. Federal public health agencies have a wide range of responsibilities and functions which includes public health research, funding, and oversight of direct healthcare providers. It has been a long time since changes have been made to the way the federal government structures its health care roles and programs outside of Medicare and Medicaid (Trust, 2013). With healthcare reform on the horizon now is the time to invest time and money in prevention, not medicine, making it a top priority to improve health and prevent disease. Funding efforts at all levels of the public health continuum need to focus on developing programs aimed at such leading initiatives as tobacco cessation, improving nutrition, supplying safe workplaces, and increasing physical activity in all ages of the population. People should have equal access to quality preventative medicine and education.

Healthcare organizations are designed to meet the healthcare needs of individuals and promote a healthy community. The three healthcare organizations that interest me are: The Heart Hospital Baylor of Plano, Texas Health Center for Diagnostics & Surgery Plan, and Parkland Health and Hospital System. Due to the evolving healthcare industry, focusing on just patients and physicians is no longer a marketing strategy. According to Mycek (2015), “Marketing teams need to expand their consideration set and focus on the new 5 P’s of Healthcare Marketing” (p. 1).
To conclude, unhealthy foods in the cafeteria and the vending machines are the worst examples for the kids to maintain the healthy eating habits. Us Parents have to step in to make changes for our kids because in doing so would determine what kind of foods our kids are consuming. We do know for facts they are not getting the proper nutrients while in school, although they do spend in average of eight to 12 hours in schools. We, the parents, can start to make a difference, by attending the school meetings and being active in our kids functions in schools.
There are many benefits and many possible drawbacks for the participation in a federal school breakfast program. The USDA sponsors the federal school breakfast program. The relationship between hunger and the ability to learn are very closely related. Of the many benefits to a school breakfast program, one includes the assurance that the children are eating a balanced meal during the school day. In turn researchers believe that eating a balanced healthy breakfast leads children in enhancing attention and alertness, energy and motivation, concentration and self-discipline (Ragno, 1994).
Breakfast has been considered as the important meal to begin the day. Majority of parents and educators preferred their child and students to take breakfast to enhance their academic’s performance. Breakfast can be defined as, first meal of the day, taken before or at the start of daily activities, usually not later than 10.00 a.m (Giovannini et. al. 2008). According to Robinson, (1968), Burton, (1976) Wells, (1981) “The concern is based on the common belief that mental and physical performance are below optimal by mid-morning if no breakfa...
Educational institutions have the potential to, first and foremost, educate and assist the young people of today with making the positive, healthful choices necessary to maintain good health. Over 4,500 students have been followed in recent research studies and these “thousands of sixth graders who participated in a school-based health program were less obese by eighth grade than a group of similar children who did not, according to a new study done for the National Institutes of Health” (Rabin). Schools need to create health programs focused on assisting all children suffering from being overweight or obese. Policies such as fitness programs, nutrition classes, and healthful meals can even impact every student by creating a strong foundation and awareness of the negative, long term effects associated with practicing unhealthy habits. Although the financial expenses would be necessary, the adaption of scho...
Nutrition education can be incorporated in all aspects of their curriculum. School age children are more responsible for selecting their own foods, since they are less likely to experience fewer food related feeding problems. School age children are often willing to eat a wider variety of foods. Many food habits, likes, and dislikes are set during this time. Family, friends, and the media influence their food choices and eating habits. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eating breakfast boosts children intake of key vitamins and minerals. Breakfasts are usually dictated by work and leisure activities and is usually eaten hurriedly which was used as an opportunity by fast food chains to prepare more portable foods at convenient locations. Not having breakfast may cause difficulties for children of school age in terms of academic performance, emotional reactivity, and physical activities (Adolphus et.al., 2013). Choosing the right food to prepare in the morning is very crucial for mothers considering the calcium, vitamins and other important nutrients their children will need in their body for them to function well in school, along with maintaining such preparations to keep their nutrition levels as well (2008). The parent’s breakfast preparation skills will reflect on the children’s eating behavior and performance in school. (Kanarek et.al.,
I acquired a lot of facts about eating breakfast. My original assumptions were quite accurate. I knew that skipping breakfast would lead to over indulgence at a later time. I learned many new things. Some new things I learned include how breakfast affects the body, the amount of teens that eat breakfast daily, and why most people skip the most important meal of the day. I was quite surprised by how the body’s metabolism is enhanced after eating in the morning. I am very thankful that I chose this topic because I now know why breakfast makes me healthier and I started eating breakfast more regularly. Now, I live a healthier life because I know how to start my day right.

Schools have started creating better lunches, with more of the necessities, such as grains, vegetables, fruits, proteins, and dairy, in the lunches each day. However, students have continued to become obese whether through lack of exercise, lack of nutrition, or a combination of the two. Whose responsibility is it to keep the kids healthy?
