Critical Reflection
In this reflective assignment, I am going to be discussing a critical incident encountered in practice early 2015. My second point will focus on reflection; define reflection, types of reflection used and why it is important to reflect in practice. I will apply Driscoll model of reflection. (Driscoll, 2007 cited in Nunn, 2012). Under critical incident, I will define and explain our feelings during the time of incident and what was implemented after the incident. Martin (2014) defines critical incident as an event or episode that deviates from the expected or desired cause and could have potentially negative effects for patients care and safety. In health care, communication is categorised as a teamwork-related performance that helps ensure patient safety, which cannot be miscalculated. The message is shared in between verbal and non-verbal communication. (Chard and Makary, 2015). As part of a health care team it is recommended to have effective communication skills and negotiation techniques to achieve best outcomes at the same time respecting the dignity and human rights of all troubled. (Bach and Grant, 2015). Berlo, 1960 considered communication in four steps that begins from the sender sending the message through the channel to the receiver. Returning to the critical incident of Mrs Graham brings an awareness and memories to my mind as I was really shocked in a way that my heart rate accelerated by the way it came into force. Names used in this assignment have been changed for confidentiality. Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC, 2015). Mrs Graham decided to abscond through the patio door looking for Mr Graham around 4:00am, this was triggered by separating them. Mr Graham had suicidal thoughts and was found in the morning with a sharp object intending to cut his pace maker. (See Appendix one). At the same time Mrs Graham had verbalised to staff that Mr Graham is verbally abusive to her but no one had witnessed that. The manager was informed and gave permission to the nurse on duty to do the assessment. This point was taken serious in separating them to protect Mrs Graham from psychological abuse, as the national policy, Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adult’s, state that it is the responsibility of all employees to protect all adults against abuse. Mrs Graham was known to be a wheelchair bound service user from the day she moved in to the community, this was due to her medical condition of having dizzy spells time and again. In relation to health and safety of service users, she always required assistance of one health care staff to do all her personal requirements, transfers and moving. Communication is cited as a contributing factor in 70% of healthcare mistakes, leading to many initiatives across the healthcare settings to improve the way healthcare professionals communicate. (Kohn, 2000.)
Communication encompasses a wide range of processes such as the exchange of information, listening, posing of questions (Fleischer et al., 2009) or use of body language. In a healthcare environment where there are constant interactions among nurses, doctors, patients and other health professionals, professional and effective communication is important in ensuring high quality healthcare standards and meeting the individual needs of patients.
The purpose of this Reflective assignment is to demonstrate how the application of the Registered Nurses standards for practise (2016) can be used in reflective practise. The Registered Nurses standards of Practise (2016) states that RN’s should develop their practise through reflecting on experiences, knowledge, actions, their feelings and beliefs and recognise how these factors shape professional practise(RNSP, 1.2).Reflection allows individuals to look back on their day-to-day situations and how they made us react and feel; what we would change if we had the chance, to create a different outcome; and what we would do next time to enhance the way we conduct ourselves in a professional manner.
There are different forms and reason people communicate in a health and social care environment. Methods of communication used in social care settings range from verbal and non-verbal communication and as such, communication is the exchange of information between people in an organisation (BTEC, 2010). Pearson Education Limited identified the different reasons people communicate which are; to express needs; to share ideas and information; to reassure; to express feelings and/or concerns; to build relationships; socialise; to persuade, argue and inform; to compliment and gain attention; to learn, teach and educate; to ask questions and to share experiences (2013). Effective communication between patient and clinician is an important aspect to patient care. Proper communication has a direct positive impact on patient care and adversely poor communication has a direct negative impact on patient care. I will define the seven principles of patient-clinician communication and how I apply these communications with my patients. I will also describe the three methods currently being used to improve interdisciplinary communication and the one method that my area of practice currently uses. Then, I will explain the ethical principles that can be applied to issues in patient-clinician communication. And Lastly, the importance of ethics in communication and how patient safety is influenced by good or bad team communication.
“Communication is the heart of nursing… your ability to use your growing knowledge and yourself as an instrument of care and caring and compassion” (Koerner, 2010, as cited in Balzer-Riley, 2012, p. 2). The knowledge base which Koerner is referring to includes important concepts such as communication, assertiveness, responsibility and caring (Balzer-Riley, 2012). Furthermore, communication is complex. It includes communication with patients, patient families, doctors, co-workers, nurse managers and many others. Due to those concepts and the variety of people involved, barriers and issues are present. Knowing how to communicate efficiently can be difficult.
The purpose of this essay is to reflect and critically study an incident in a clinical setting whilst using a model of reflection. This will allow me to analyse and make sense of the incident and draw conclusions relating to personal learning outcomes. The significance of critical analysis and critical incidents will briefly be discussed, followed by the process of reflection using the chosen model. The incident will then be described and analysed and the people involved introduced. The names of the people involved have been changed to protect their privacy and I will examine issues raised in light of the recent literature relating to the incident.
In nursing practice, communication is essential, and good communication skills are paramount in the development of a therapeutic nurse/patient relationship. This aim of this essay is to discuss the importance of communication in nursing, demonstrating how effective communication facilitates a therapeutic nurse/patient relationship. This will be achieved by providing a definition of communication, making reference to models of communication and explaining how different types of communication skills can be used in practise.
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
The ability to reflect critically on one’s experience, integrate knowledge gained from experience with knowledge possessed, and take action on insights is considered by some adult educators to be a distinguishing feature of the adult learner (Brookfield 1998; Ecclestone 1996; Mezirow 1991). Critical reflection is the process by which adults identify the assumptions governing their actions, locate the historical and cultural origins of the assumptions, question the meaning of the assumptions, and develop alternative ways of acting (Cranton 1996). Brookfield (1995) adds that part of the critical reflective process is to challenge the prevailing social, political, cultural, or professional ways of acting. Through the process of critical reflection, adults come to interpret and create new knowledge and actions from their ordinary and sometimes extraordinary experiences. Critical reflection blends learning through experience with theoretical and technical learning to form new knowledge constructions and new behaviors or insights.
Communication in the nursing practice and in healthcare is important because when talking with patients, their families, and staff, the nurse and the nursing student needs to be able to efficiently express the information that they want the other person to understand. “Verbal communication is a primary way of transmitting vital information concerning patient issues in hospital settings” (Raica, 2009, para. 1). When proper communication skills are lacking in nursing practice, the chances of errors and risks to the patient’s safety increases. One crucial aspect of communication that affects the patient care outcome is how the nurse and the nursing student interacts and communicates with the physicians and other staff members. If the nurse is not clear and concise when relaying patient information to other members of the healthcare team the patient care may be below the expected quality.
While the semester is over and the deadline has expired, I thought I would write this to express my true intended thoughts.
This critical reflection seeks to provide an in-depth analysis of how the entrepreneurial tools taught throughout this semester has assisted me in developing insightful information towards my contributions of the business plan. The process allowed me to identify, clarify and test the credibility of my personal insights. Entrepreneurial tools being assessed are customer experience mapping, questioning and idea networking. The paper started off with a detailed introduction of the actual product that my group have finalised on, then followed by comprehensive evaluations of the tools. Lastly, it ends off with a reflective conclusion with valuable learning points. All in all, it improved the quality of my contribution towards the project.
Communication involves relaying information from an individual to another through the use of verbal and nonverbal techniques. Many factors affect the effectiveness of information relay. It involves evaluating verbal aspects such as tone of voice, the emotional content being communicated, the timing and rapport of the interaction with patients, and nonverbal techniques such as facial expressions, time invested. It is necessary for productive and satisfactory work environment, improved patient outcomes, and settling conflicts. The purpose of this paper is to identify issues with ineffective communication and ways to improve proper communication throughout the a hospital’s interdisciplinary team and patients.
Critical thinking is a significant and essential topic in recent education. The strategy of critical thinking skills helps identify areas in one's courses as the suitable place to highlight, expand and use some problems in exams that test students' critical thinking skills.
