Persuasion is the concept of changing someone’s mind or supporting a certain value, belief, or behavior.
Imagine two people are arguing; one person is clearly right, but the other person is obviously winning. Why is this? People that make convincing arguments are usually the ones who can vouch for their character and make the audience think that they should believe them. Along with making people think they are trustworthy they must also appeal to human emotion. Change the way they feel and it will change the way they think.
According to Merriam Webster, the term “ethical” can be defined as “rules of behavior based on ideas about what is morally good and bad.” Being able to differentiate between what is good, and what is bad is key when it comes to many things. One of these things includes persuasion. There are many concepts that can explain why certain principles of persuasion can be more ethical than others, and many that are critical to being an ethical communicator. Its purpose is to help affirm or nullify an idea, belief or attitude. Sometimes the exact topic is very detectable in communication such as during debates but other times it displayed a little more subtly. Persuasion is more than just verbally speaking. Typically, this could come in the form of a salesman or, even a manager communicating with key stakeholders, such as potential investors.
Credibility is not just another term that is defined, but it is a term shown through actions. The act of believability, trustworthiness, reliability and responsibility, are key components of credibleness (Kouzes & Posner, 2012). We recognized great leaders when “their actions aligned with their words” (Kouzes & Posner, 2012, p.37). The importance of knowledge, expertise and competency, are abilities that contribute to credibility (Kouzes & Posner, 2012).

Persuasion can have both positive and negative effects, however, used appropriately, persuasion can be an incredibly effective tool.
