Credentialing is a system used by various organizations and agencies such as Medicare, Blue Cross in order to ensure that their healthcare practitioners meet the requirements and are appropriately qualified. The credentialing process involves the verification of education, licensure, certification, and reference checks. In order for a nurse practitioner to be eligible to bill government agencies and insurance companies, they must be credentialed. Credentialing is a term used to designate that an individual, program, institution or product has met established standards set by (governmental or non-governmental) that they are recognized as qualified to carry out the established standards. The standards may be minimal and mandatory. Credentials
have to renewed periodically to show and assure that the set standards are still continued to meet the quality or they may be withdrawn if the standards of competence or behavior are no longer met. Certification is the process by which a nongovernmental agency or an association grants recognition to an individual who has met certain predetermined qualifications specified by an agency or association. Such qualifications may include (a) graduation from an accredited or approved program, (b) acceptable performance on a qualifying examination or series of examinations, and/or (c) completion of a given amount of work experience (Committee for the Study of Credentialing in Nursing, 1979). The purpose of certification is to ensure various publics that an individual has mastered a body of knowledge and acquired skills in a particular specialty. Certification can be used for entry into practice, validation of competence, recognition of excellence, and/or for regulation (Hickey, 1999). Certification can be mandatory or voluntary.
I now that I have the knowledge to aspire to take up my role within one of the identified population foci. APRNs program developed my core competencies by allowing me to be more efficient adaptability with regards to newly emerging APRN roles or population focus. Furthermore, achieving my course objectives enable me to understand the specific APRN roles. For example, course objectives provide me with a better detail, and align my licensure goals with the responsibilities expected of each role. Licensure will provide me and my fellow APRN graduates with the full authority to practice. Also, certification is required to meet the highest possible standards as APRNs are expected to align knowledge, skills and experience with the standards of health care professionals. This field has very narrow margins for error, and it is therefore important, for APRNs to meet the highest and most stringent academic qualifications. In order to be a recognized as APRN graduate, one is required to complete formal education with a graduate degree or post-graduate certificate awarded by an academic institute and accredited by a recognized accrediting agency empowered by the relevant government education
Both Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Practitioner-students work closely with patients to monitor their health and provide care for acute and chronic illnesses. However, in the academic-clinical setting, the NP-student may only perform this function at the discretion of the supervising NP. Although work environments and responsibilities bestowed upon these distinctive nurses can be quite different, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses and students is bound to the same laws and regulations governed by all states and territories that have enacted a nurse practice act (NPA). Entry to Practice Competencies Upon graduating from the nursing program and becoming a Registered Practical Nurse through the CNO, I will need to meet the standards that are expected of me. The CNO ensures nurses are providing safe, competent, and ethical care while providing care, by providing the standards needed to be met. As a future nurse, I need to be familiar with the expectations listed under the entry-level RPN profile, in order to ensure I meet the requirements.
To become a Health Certified Health specialist it takes an individual who is passionate about giving back to their community and making it a healthier and safer environment; it requires a competent individual that is academically trained to assess and determine what is the best for the environment and for the public. According to the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (n.d.) under the CHES exam eligibility section, it states, in order to become a Certified Health Education Specialist an individual must hold a “bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher education”(para. 2). In addition, one must provide an official transcript that ensures the individual has completed a major in health education or “25 semester hours or 37 quarter
Define Nursing Nursing is a knowledge-based profession within the health care sector that focuses on the overall care of individuals. According to The American College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP), “defines nurse practitioners as registered nurses who have received graduate-level nursing education and clinical training, which enables them to provide a wide range of preventative and acute health care services to individuals of all ages. They deliver high-quality, cost effective care, often performing physical examinations, ordering tests, making diagnoses, and prescribing and managing medication and therapies”. Nurse Practitioners are able to specialize in a particular area, such as family and adult practice, pediatrics, and women’s health; and refer patients to other specialists when necessary. Some nurse practitioners work under the supervision of a physician while others run their own practices.
Getting a certification actually starts with a self-assessment. A registered nurse with a desire to move forward in his or her career ladder should try to analyze what are his or her strengths and weaknesses. Aside from that, he or she should also consider the resources that he or she is about to use in getting that certification. For instance, when a registered nurse decides to take the certification for paediatric nurse practitioner, the most fundamental idea is that a registered nurse genuinely cares for children and the alterations in the growth and development of children.
Competence in nursing is having the knowledge, judgement, skills and experience to carry out professional duties correctly and effectively (RCN, 2009). All nurses must prove their level of competence before they can become registered as a nurse. They must do this by showing their competencies in all fields of nursing, and by proving their specific competencies in their own field of nursing, without doing this, they will not be allowed to practice. This ensures that all practicing nurses have a high level of competency. The nursing and midwifery council also states that to protect the public they ensure that they set standards for education, training and conduct, and by ensuring registered nurses keep their skills and knowledge up to date.
Standards are important aspects of nursing that a nurse must learn and implement every day for the rest of their nursing career. These standards provide for a nurse’s competence in the quality of care they deliver to the public. Standards offer a necessary guidance to nurses everywhere in an effort to ensure that people are treated correctly and ethically. Patients expect nurses to have a general knowledge of the medical realm and to know exactly what it is they –as nurses- are responsible for. Nurses need to have a sense of professionalism that enable the patient to feel safe and secure, knowing that a competent person is caring for him. A lack of professionalism does the opposite, making it impossible for a patient to trust or respect the nurse caring for him. Standards of nursing, if utilized correctly, give the nurse that sense of professionalism the patient is expecting. It insures for the safety of the patient and allows the nurse to provide quality health care that is expected of a medical professional.
These core competencies are guidelines that build upon existing core competencies and help to prepare NPs in implementing a full scope of practice as a licensed practitioner (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2012). These competencies promote consistency and quality.
The American Board of Nursing Specialties describes certification as the proper acknowledgment of specialized skills, knowledge, and practice demonstrated by the accomplishment of standards outlined by a nursing specialty. The certification associated with specialty practice regularly functions as a professional landmark. Validation by an outside source endorses that an individual has met the established national standards. When an advanced practice nurse prepares to become certified in his/her specialty there must be proper preparation in order to be successful.
Credentialing has replaced education, in a way that negatively impacts society, due to the effect it has on the purpose of learning in relation to job status and overall authenticity of a person. Education and credentialing have very different meanings, although they both rely on each other to provide purpose. An education is the accumulation of information, resulting in an overall knowledge of a certain topic, where critical analysis and thought have taken place. Hence, material has not been purely memorized to pass a test, but actually absorbed into the person through a clear process of understanding.
