1.0 Introduction

This case study aims to analyse two different career options to explore for my own personal career development. The chosen careers to be analysed are an event manager and a theatre producer, both of which will be considered as future career options. To accomplish this, the case study will focus on the responsibilities of practitioners in these careers, the opportunities and challenges they may face, the skills and capabilities that they need, what links there are between the careers and my own case study profile, as well as what steps I should take to help carry my career aspirations forward.

2.0 Career Descriptions

The first of the two careers to be analysed is an event manager, sometimes also called event organisers or event planners. Prospects UK (2012) describes event managers as being the ones responsible for event production from its conception, right through to its completion. This can include the initial planning and organisation of the event, the development of a management plan to assist in the preparation (Gascoyne Development Commission, n.d.), and the coordination of all aspects of the event on the day its being held (Prospects UK 2012). This career was chosen as I feel like I would enjoy the creative aspects of planning my own unique, memorable and enjoyable events.

The American Association of Community Theatre (n.d.) describes theatre producers as being someone who is “responsible for budgeting, scheduling work, and coordinat...

7.0 Conclusion

This case study has successfully analysed two possible career options I could explore in the future, event planning and theatre production. After investigating the responsibilities and skills of practitioners in these careers, the opportunities and challenges they may face, and what steps I should take to help carry these career aspirations forward, it is clear that there are both similarities and differences between the chosen career options. It can also be seen that there are some strong links between the careers and my personal practitioner profile. Although there are in fact some key differences between the careers, success in either of these careers will rest on obtaining similar skills, facing similar challenges and implementing similar strategies to build a successful career.
