Crash and Burn Many believe that Maclaren, a Scottish author, was the original source of the quotation “Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle”. This quote is used often and interpreted in different ways. In the book, Crash and Burn, by Michael Hassan, this quote relates to the constant theme; shown multiple times throughout the novel. In this book, the theme includes the fact that everyone goes through their own battles. This is shown on page 40, where it states, “They also talked about my academic issues and my recent diagnosis as having ADHD, not just ADD, the H being for hyperactivity, another important component that apparently kept me from listening.” The main character, Crash, suffers from this but is still expected to get good grades, and …show more content…

Shown through the following words is another example of theme. It states, “I thought about the last time I talked with Roxanne in the halls of Meadows, with me leaving, thinking that there was something different about her, not just in the way she talked to me, but in the total lack of energy behind her voice. Should I have known she would try to kill herself?” (page 220) Crash’s friend Roxanne, dealing with depression as her own battle, tries to cover it up at school. A similar event happens on page 228, when it says, “Felicia told me that when she was Roxanne’s age, someone she trusted betrayed her, and when she had nowhere to turn, she tried to do it too, tried to kill herself, just like Roxanne.” Crash’s stepmom helps Crash understand Roxanne’s situation by telling her own story.
