The Burnt stick is a novel about inequality
This is an essay demonstrates a strong agreement that the burnt stick is a novel about inequality. Since from the eighteenth to the twentieth there were a lot of clues in this novel shows inequality between white and aboriginal. Protagonist John, the light skinned aboriginal kid from the novel had been taken away from his family by the government in a really early age, send the campus around Australia to learn white people’s things with the big father in Pearl Bay, during the process was really heartbreaking to John, but the majority ignored his feelings, because they don’t have the same skin colour. This tragic experience makes him come back to his hometown after he turn be an adult, but there was no one still exist. By analysing the three points show from each paragraph, this essay will contend that the inequality shows in this novel.
The stolen generation is a scenario carry out by the Australian government to separate most aboriginal people’s families. The compassionate novel Deadly Unna?, written by Phillip Gwynne, creates vivid characters and depicts race discourses experienced by Gary Black (also known as Blacky) in a fictitious South Australian coastal community. The novel portrays a typical coastal town of the 1970s and is set mainly in the Port: the local Pub, the Black family home and the jetty, where the local children play. The story explores the racism between the Nungas (the indigenous population who live at the Point) and the Gooynas (the white population who live at the Port). As Blacky is from the Port, he only begins to develop awareness of the racism around him as a result of his friendship with Dumby Red, a Nunga football player, and consequently stops making racist jokes and comments. Analysis of racist ideas in the town, the marginalisation of the Nunga community, Blacky’s changing beliefs and how it influences and empowers him to respond to the death of Dumby Red, reveals that Gwynne encourages the reader to reject the racist values, attitudes and beliefs of Blacky’s community.
“The Inner Circle”, written by Gary Crew is a novel based on two juvenile boys, Joe Carney and Tony Landon. Tony is a white teenager, ignored by his divorced parents and given money instead of love, whereas Joe Carney is a black Aboriginal teenager, who wants to overcome racism and social exclusion. Joe and Tony do not have anything in common except their age and emotional confusion, but they become friends after meeting in the old abandoned power station regardless of their racial difference. Gary Crew wrote the novel in Joe and Tony point of view, which a chapter for Joe and a chapter for Tony is given to provide the readers an understanding of how the European settlement has a big impacts of how Indigenous Aboriginal are treated in today’s society. The white settlers changed Indigenous lives forever, where now Aboriginal people are experiencing racism, poor living condition and unemployment because of their skin colour. Gary Crew showed this through Joe’s Carney point of view. This essay will analyse the issue of racism, social exclusion, racial discrimination, family and child relationship and the friendship that is conveyed between Tony and Joe throughout the novel.
Racism causes Walter’s to think different about the world. As a teen Walter started to realize racism would always be apart of his life. At school Walter only found white authors and white people that made history. Cabs didn’t stop for “colored” people so the had to take the train. “We did not get many yellow cabs coming to the street, because downtown cabs did not stop for black people” (Page 59).

Before we look at whether James Moloney effectively uses characterisation to convey Aboriginal issues we must look at the issues themselves. In Dougy, the issue of black and white prejudice is strongly present in the plot. The stereotyping of Aborigines and white Europeans play an important role in the events and the outcome of the story, as is individuality and the breaking of the stereotypes. The book also touches on the old Aboriginal superstitions that are still believed in by some today, though one of such superstitions plays an important role in creating the mood of the resolution. These issues impact most heavily on the character Gracey.
The novel is set during a World War. The tension and separation of races during a war seemed evident in Australia. As a multicultural country including Japanese and Aborigine population, conflicting attitudes towards these races had to be imminent. The fact that this film is based on a true story makes it more powerful and real. The film puts a human face to the stolen generation, and the young actress who plays the main character Molly does not disillusion the viewer of the real emotions and disgusting actions taken upon the young half caste children taken from their families. She makes the journey real and her cleverness is created by the need to survive, not as an entertainment construction to make the film more exciting, but to give the viewer an emotional impact. The racial activist, A.O. Neville constantly shows strong discrimination against both Aboriginal culture and half-caste children. He is determined to `breed the black out of them'. "Are we to allow the creation of a third unwanted race?" resembling the cause of World War Two where Adoff Hitler proposed the creation of the `perfect race' therefore killing off over half the Jewish people.

Since the time of federation the Aboriginal people have been fighting for their rights through protests, strikes and the notorious ‘day of mourning’. The Stolen Generation has left devastating impacts upon the Aboriginal culture and heritage, Australian history and the presence of equality experienced today. The ‘Stolen Generation’ refers to the children of Aboriginal descent being forcefully abducted by government officials of Australia and placed within institutions and catholic orphanages, being forced to assimilate into ‘white society’. These dehumanising acts placed these stolen children to experience desecration of culture, loss of identity and the extinction of their race. The destructive consequences that followed were effects of corruption including attempted suicide, depression and drug and alcohol abuse. The indigenous peoples affected by this have endured solitude for many years, this has only been expressed to the public recently and a proper apology has been issued, for the years of ignorance to the implementation of destruction of culture. The Stolen Generation has dramatically shaped Australian history and culture.
On the morning of February 13 2008, Australia’s Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd made an apology to Australia’s indigenous peoples in the House of Representatives, Parliament House. The apology is more commonly known has the ‘Sorry’ speech as it was an attempt to officially move forward as a nation from the injustice that was the Stolen Generation. The Stolen Generations, occurring from approximately 1905 to 1969, was an endeavour by White Australians to create cultural assimilation and to ultimately force the ideal ‘White Australia.’ In this effort, around 100, 000 aboriginal children, often under 5 years of age and of mixed race, were removed from their families and raised in a white family. Kevin Rudd’s speech was the first time the Australian Government released an official apology to people affected by the policies of the previous governments. The speech, while apologising, is also stating the parliament’s aim to equalise opportunities for all Australians, regardless of their origin.
One major contributor to Australia’s demographic includes an Indigenous population. The challenges with identifying with two different cultures are the language barriers, which leads an ineffective communication between two people, which will sometimes result in confusion in the lack to understand those languages. Indigenous people who were a part of the stolen generation might not even of having learned their commutative language and, as a result, feel isolated and a sense of something missing in themselves.
The polarisation of the Aboriginal community came after the Stolen Generation was removed from their indigenous families. The effect of removing these children was devastating, not only for the children that was removed, but also for the Aboriginal community that was left behind. The aborigines are a folk which depend largely on family and the strength of their kinship with one another. By removing the future generation of aborigines, the remaining people became insecure about the future of their heritage and about the relationship they had with those in
