Course Reflection Paper
For me, one of the most important things I believe in is helping others. I have always wanted to do the right thing and help those in need. Almost never did it cross my mind that I also have to take care of myself. Throughout the course, we talked a lot about self-care and why it is so important. At the beginning of the course, I didn’t know what I was going to do for my own self-care. With some of the ideas that my classmates shared in class, I learned some of the things that I can do or try. I realized that self-care wasn’t as complicated as I thought it was. Some of the things that I will do for my self-care plan is: having a day to myself, traveling, going out with friends, and reading. It’s the little things that help us de-stress ourselves.
People have always told me that I am really good at talking to people. At first, I was confused at what they meant. Throughout this course, I got to learn more about myself and what people meant when they said that I am a good listener. With my own group of friends, I am the one they come to if they are having issues. I have learned that there is nothing really special in the way you listen to others. I did learn about a couple tricks

We need that strong foundation to make the right ethical decisions when working with clients. The NOHS Code of Ethics helps us set specific guidelines not just with our clients, but also with our coworkers, students, and to ourselves. One of the things that we talked about during class was to make sure that we take care of ourselves. When we have something bothering us, we can consult with our clients. When we know that there is a certain situation with our clients that we can’t handle, to make sure to refer them to someone that can help them better than us. It is set clear to us that we can’t try to take on a problem that we have no educational background on
A code of ethics provides a standard by which nurses conduct themselves and their practice, observing ethical obligations of the profession and providing quality care. To achieve its purpose, a code of ethics must be understood, internalized, and used by nurses in all aspects of their work” (Aliakvari, 2015, p. 494).
“Ethics is a systematic study of principles of right and wrong conduct” (Taylor, Lillis, Lynn, & LeMone, 2015, p. 96). The American Nurses Association Code of Ethics has nine provisions to it. All nine are important to the nursing field in their own way. There are two provisions that I find most important in helping my career as a nurse. Provision one, The nurse, in all professional relationships, practices with compassion and respect of the inherent dignity, worth, and uniqueness of every individual, unrestricted by considerations of social or economic status, personal, attributes, or the nature of health problems. Secondly provision two, the nurse’s primary commitment is to the patient whether an individual, family, group, or community.
Businesses across the world, including the United States, have a code of ethics statement within their business to stay professional, attract consumers, and stay away from the legal department. A code of ethics is a statement that explains the values and mission statement that goes along with their career. For instance, medical, business, social workers, and etc. have different mission statements and values for their consumers. During this essay, I’ll explain the medical code of ethics, how has the ethical code impacted myself, positively impacted my future company, job or society, lack of morals, my own professional code of ethics and life examples within the American Medical Associations Code of Ethics.
My overall experience in Intro to Human Services was phenomenal. This class was definitely one of my favorite classes this semester. I loved the way it was taught and I was able to understand how human services works while reading the book Precious throughout the semester. This course isn’t an easy class that you can just relax and breeze through. It has a lot of fundamental chapters that explain the jobs of helpers also known as human service workers. I loved how we were supposed to read the chapters before class and then we would review in class. It made more sense by doing it this way. It never felt like we were rushing through the material and the pace of the class was perfect. I also loved how professor Oropall always was willing to explain
I will also make use of my colleagues and supervisors as a resource. By working as part of a team and discussing my plan for action, others may be able to more clearly see any ethical considerations that I may have missed. As we discussed in class, working in isolation can be very harmful to clinicians and result in more ethics violations. While I am ultimately responsible for making ethical decisions, having colleagues that are knowledgeable and not directly working with the client may notice a boundary crossing or problematic behavior before it becomes a larger
Explain the National Organization of Human Services (NOHS) Code of Ethics, and its importance to the profession.
The codes of ethics are established to help, protect, and provide guidance to each individual professional on how to act in their respective profession and create an environment where ethical behavior is practiced and observed by everyone in the profession. By observing the code of ethics every member ensures that they are held to a higher standard when it comes to quality patient care and at the same time help eliminate bad actors in the profession. For example, every physician is held to a code of “do no harm” when it comes to patient care and every physician or medical student are required to follow this
The irony is that speaking to others is one of the most important, if not the most important, professional and personal skill students must have to be successful (Doyle 88). The student needs to understand the importance of this skill and realize that in the future many opportunities and career successes are directly impacted by working with others. Students are also encouraged to take charge of their learning. Giving the student control and as many choices is a good way to optimized their learning.
When reading the opening lecture I cringed at the thought of dealing with communication. Sort of that belly ache feeling you get when you had to do an oral presentation in front of the class in elementary school. I understand have a number of strong qualities but self-image and my perception are still traits I long to improve.
The importance of being a good listener has brought me to realize the consciousness of how to be more considerate of my friends and family when they are trying to communicate with me and I am in turn trying to communicate with them. Communication has taught me to remove myself from the picture sometime and see in the eyes of people around. I find that when I am more attentive to the needs of those who are trying to connect with me, life is much easier.
To be effective listeners, the listening process should be incorporated into our lives. We should be attentive to what people say, clarify what the speaker is trying to come across, and respond in a way the speaker can understand what we are saying. I think I was aware that I needed some improvement in certain areas of this process but I feel as everything is slowly changing. In the future, I’m going try not to interrupt people, get distracted, tune out, and try to get a bigger picture of what the person is telling me. If good listening habits are applied in our day-to-day life, we can easily communicate with anyone and everyone.
The field of social work is one that requires much self-reflection on the part of the worker. In doing so, it helps the worker better understand his or her own emotions and the thought processes that these emotions come from. The goal of this paper is to provide my own self-reflection, relating it to my own emotional intelligence in the domains of relationships, tolerance, flexibility, self-management, and emotional awareness, and my future plans and goals in Widener University’s MSW program.
Self-care is a necessary practice in everyone’s life. This practice allows people to relax and replenished themselves. The first time I heard of this term was in during one of my social work classes. As we began to discuss self-care it became clear, that without proper self-care people, not just social workers are doing themselves a disservice. Self-care encompasses more than general rest. Self-care deals with emotional wellbeing, good health and spiritual wellbeing. All of these areas are key to having good self-care. The reading provides a good description self-care, it stated that self-care is achieving an equilibrium across our personal school and work lives. Achieving equilibrium in my personal life will only increase my ability to support and help others.
Before exposure to the content of this course, I was confident in my ability to communicate interpersonally. Upon my first encounter with feedback from my peers, I was surprised to find out that others did not also think this. Coming into this course, I relied heavily on only verbal communication. I was introduced to several important new skills that help me communicate with others more precisely, including paraphrasing, c...
