When Copernicus discovered the earth revolved around the sun it changed science and human perception forever. Earth had been believed to be the center of the universe for 12 centuries. This idea was profound and not accepted well at first. Copernicus was ridiculed and scorned for his novel ideas at the time, but, eventually he was vindicated with his published work De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelesium. When Copernicus finally received recognition with a published manuscript of his revolutionary work he was seventy years old, most likely on his death bed, and it was 1543. Other scientists and explorers of the time weren’t so lucky. Scientists of his day that eluded to the idea that the universe and its inhabitants might have a scientific origin and not a necessarily religious one were at risk of being tortured or executed. One courageous soul who risked life and limb in the name of science was Andreas Vesalius who, like Copernicus, turned the scientific world on its head with his work De Humanis Corporis Fabrica.

In papal Rome in the early 16th century the “Good Book” was the reference book for all scientists. If a theory was supported in its holy pages, or at the very least not contradicted, then the idea had a chance of find acceptance outside the laboratory. Likewise, no theory no matter how well documented could be viewed with anything but disdain if it contradicted with the written word of, or the Church’s official interpretation of scripture. For these reasons the Church suppressed helio-centric thinking to the point of making it a hiss and a byword. However, this did not keep brave men from exploring scientific reason outside the canonical doctrine of the papal throne, sometimes at the risk of losing their own lives. While the Vatican was able to control the universities and even most of the professors, it could not control the mind of one man known to the modern world as Galileo Galilei. Despite a wide array of enemies, Galileo embarked on a quest, it seems almost from the beginning of his academic career, to defend the Copernican idea of a helio-centric universe by challenging the authority of the church in matters of science. Galileo‘s willingness to stand up for what he held to be right in the face of opposition from Bible-driven science advocates set him apart as one of the key players in the movement to separate Church authority from scientific discovery, and consequently paved the way for future scientific achievement.

The scientific revolution can be considered one of the biggest turning points in European history. Because of new scientific ideas and theories, a new dawn of thinking and questioning of natural elements had evolved. Scientific revolution thinkers such as Newton, Galileo, and Copernicus all saw nature as unknowable and wanted to separate myths from reality. During the scientific revolution during mid 1500-late 1600s, key figures such as Isaac Newton and Nicolaus Copernicus greatly impacted Europe in terms of astronomical discoveries, scientific methods, and the questioning of God to challenge the church’s teachings.
Throughout history, many people have had good impacts on the lives of others around them. Few men, though, can say that they’ve greatly impacted the entire world in a positive manner. Galileo Galilei is one of these men. Not only did he challenge the ideologies that people had just blindly accepted for years at the time, but he can be seen as one of the (if not the) most central figures of the 17th century scientific revolution. This period contained a number of shocking developments that conflicted with the views society had held regarding the universe--and more specifically, the Earth around them--for over a millennium.
This discovery did not sit well with the people of that time. He shared his discovery with everyone and eventually wrote a book called The Starry Messenger in 1610. This book focused more on his findings of the moons of Jupiter. A few years later he wrote a book titled The Assayer in 1623. This book is when he gained a lot of his followers. One of his biggest supporters was Pope Urban VIII. He sort made Galileo his right hand man. Years after that, in 1632, is when he wrote his book Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems. This is when he openly spoke about finding out the Earth not being the center of the Universe. This is when all the issues came about. He was summoned to a trail for heresy in 1633. Leading up to the trial a group of eleven theologians declared that these findings were heretical. Those who believed Galileo were said to be heretics. Shortly after the book was published the Pope sent Cardinal Robert to warn Galileo that he should let his findings go and to not speak of them anymore. He was also told that if he did not obey the warning that he would be prosecuted as a heretic. However, this warning did not stop him. He continued to teach his findings. The modern science view as well as the Scientific Revolution can be argued that it began with Copernicus’ heliocentric theory; his staunch questioning of the prior geocentric worldview led to the proposal of a new idea that the Earth is not in fact the center of the solar system, but simply revolving around the Sun. Although this is accepted as common sense today, the period in which Copernicus proposed this idea was ground-breaking, controversial, and frankly, world-changing. The Church had an immense amount of power, and was a force to be reckoned with; in the beginning of the Scientific Revolution, new scientific proposals and ideas were discouraged in many cases by the Church. A quote from Galileo’s Children does an excellent job summing up the conflict: “The struggle of Galileo against Church dogma concerning the nature of the cosmos epitomized the great, inevitable and continuing clash between religion and reason.” If evidence goes against scripture, the scientist is considered a heretic and is, like in Galileo’s case, forbidden to discuss the ideas any further. Galileo Galilei, who proposed solid evidence and theory supporting the heliocentric model, was forced to go back on his beliefs in front of several high officials, and distance himself from the Copernican model. This, luckily, allowed him to not be killed as a heretic, which was the next level of punishment for the crimes he was charged with, had he not went back on his beliefs. The Scientific Revolution was a time of change and new thinking. Many innovators had new ideas about the earth and many other things, but most challenged the Church in thinking of these new concepts. This revolution was so important to the development of mankind that modern historians honor the phrase with initial capital letters. This change of thought took almost two centuries to become established in western Europe; today this prolonged crisis is known as the Scientific Revolution. This new way of seeking the world, was first introduced with Copernicus's work published in 1543. It reached its triumphal acceptance with the appearance on Isaac Newton's "Principia" in 1687*. The one person who set the Scientific Revolution in motion and pulled modern science out of ancient natural philosophy, was Galileo Galilei. He realized that the old way of looking at the world would have to go; and he knew how to begin constructing a new way. He did this by making physics mathematical. Some say that Galileo and Newton were the beginnings of the Scientific Revolution; for Isaac Newton was born a few months after the death of Galileo. Newton's ideas finally ensured the acceptability of the scientific approach. Another great innovator was Sir Francis Bacon, he developed the widely used scientific method. He proved many scientific truths by doing many experiments. These innovators and more made this revolution very important to everyone alive.
One of the earliest and most influential groups we studied were the Pythagoreans. Due to the fact, that their work was so fundamental to the development of modern science and of renowned Greek philosophy Plato, I though it important to consider them here. This is despite the fact that admittedly they weren’t “astronomers” and although Pythagoras was considered the “leader,” some even question whether or not he existed, and the story is really about his followers, who were a group. Over the course of the years, society has been reformed by new ideas of science. We learn more and more about global warming, outer space, and technology. However, this pattern of gaining knowledge did not pick up significantly until the Scientific Revolution. In the sixteenth and seventeenth century, the Scientific Revolution started, which concerned the fields of astronomy, mechanics, and medicine. These new scientists used math and observations strongly contradicting religious thought at the time, which was dependent on the Aristotelian-Ptolemy theory. However, astronomers like Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and Newton accepted the heliocentric theory. Astronomical findings of the Scientific Revolution disproved the fact that humans were the center of everything, ultimately causing people to question theology’s role in science and sparking the idea that people were capable of reasoning for themselves.
Before this revolution, the Roman Catholic church held a monopoly on most scientific research. The majority of scientists were monks or members of universities where a study of the natural world was viewed through the lens of Scripture. The Scientific Revolution was a controversial and revolutionary era of improvement and changes that transformed peoples’ views of science and ways of thinking. It was an emergence of modern science during the late 18th century, which was contributed to by scientists such as Copernicus and Galileo. Society was still heavily dominated and influenced by religion at the time, so people had trouble adjusting to the newfound facts. Developments in math and sciences wouldn’t have been able to transform views of society and nature without sparking controversies with the Church. The Church censored Copernicus and Galileo's theories not only because it threatened the traditional view of the world, but also because there was a personal conflict between Galileo and the Church.
