Essay Topic: My essay topic is religious symbols. This topic includes religious symbols such as a cross on a school, a woman wearing a hijab, etc. There are dilemmas associated with the presence of religious symbols in a society. The recent example is Bill 62.
Case Study
(give a brief description: names, dates, place, event…)
Jagmeet Singh was elected in 2017 as the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) of Canada. However, his election creates controversy, because Singh is wearing obvious religious symbols. Indeed, he wears Sikh symbols such as the turban and a long beard.
The controversy that this new leader provokes is that because of the obvious religious symbols and affiliation that he shows, it could reduce the NDP supporters.

(identity relationship to case study or professional credentials, and their general response to the dilemma. Viewpoint 1:
Religious symbols should be ban.
- Quebecers have a hard past with the religion (Delmar). This is why they are reticent to have a leader who demonstrates a strong affiliation with religion.
- It can try to convince people with his religion and implement some ideas based on his religion more than based on what people wants (Delmar)
- Bill 62- Quebec votes- Religious symbols need to be ban for public safety. This rule goes against the new NDP leader who wears religious symbols. Viewpoint 2:
People should have the right to demonstrate religious symbols.
- It is a right of liberty to show religious symbols. Bill 62 is violated this right- tells people what they needed to do- women what they need to wear (Forrest).
- Discrimination- if it was Catholic- a cross not the same (Hamilton). Jagmeet is a visible minority and his clothing can shock some person. He faced questions that will not be ask to a politician belonging to the majority (Hamilton).
- Judging people and obligate them to remove their religious symbols such as bill 62 – divided

Premises:
- It is violating someone right to ask him to remove his religious symbols. If people stops support NDP, because Jagmeet Singh is wearing religious symbols, it is going after his personal rights.
- If people stops to support NDP just because of the religious affiliation of the leader it is a kind of discrimination.
Ethical Theory used
The Ethical Theory that I will use is the John Locke’s one. The theory about associational freedom. Associational freedom is a theory on religious freedom. Locke tolerates different religious association. He believes that people can have a freedom of religion. This is directly related to my thesis, because people should have the right and the liberty to affiliate themselves with a religion, and it should not discriminate them.

The Prime Minister in Canada is the head of government and is appointed by the Governor General. Canada is the northern neighbor to the United States, and the Queen of England is its head of state. These powerful countries being so closely tied to Canada makes it a major player on the world stage, and gives considerable power to its Prime Ministers. There have been twenty-two Prime Ministers, with John Diefenbaker being the thirteenth, serving from 1957-1963, and Pierre Trudeau the fifteenth, who served 1968-1979 and again 1980-1984. Diefenbaker was a progressive conservative, a right-center group associated with British imperialism. Trudeau was part of the Liberal party of Canada, one that focused on individual freedom, ironic considering Trudeau was the only Prime Minister to enact the War Measures Act during peacetime. Domestically, these two Prime Ministers have done much in terms of protecting and growing a modern Canada. There are many ways these leaders' domestic policies were similar, such as helping to create an equality among Canadians, and many ways in which they had opposing policies, such as their policies regarding French-Canada.
The “Sons of Freedom” are a small radical group that diverged from a religious sect known as the Doukhobors. This zealous and revivalist subsect evolved from the Doukhobors only to gain the government’s attention for their extremely radical acts. They have initiated bombings, arson, nudist parades, and hunger strikes, all in protest to the land ownership and registration laws of Canada. Such obscene and violent demonstrations have caused a great deal of conflict between the Sons of Freedom and the Canadian government’s legal system and have also generated much public resentment. However, should the State of Canada have imposed laws upon this minority group that blatantly conflicted with their religious beliefs?
However, laws that are of general applicability must too be scrutinized to determine whether they are least restrictive as possible and whether the state has a compelling interest. South Fork Consolidated School District has seen a spike in gang related crimes in their schools, so in order to curb this violence they implemented a dress code policy to stop gang affiliated students from flaunting their colors and harming “guilty” students who did nothing but wear clothing that led to attacks from gang members. While the state does have a compelling interest in preventing gang violence and insuring student safety, this law is not indeed narrowly tailored to this issue. An across the board dress code policy inadvertently hurts students who wear certain articles of clothing in compliance with their faith. South Fork Consolidated School District failed to recognize that allowing exemptions for religious purposes would not compromise the state’s interest in discouraging gang activity.

In general, nationalism can be defined as a sentiment based on common cultural characteristics that binds a population and often produces a policy of national independence or separatism (Dictionary.com, 2012). The nationalist movement in Quebec has been known to be one of the most powerful national movements in the developed West (Meadwell, 1993). Quebec is an ideal example of a sub-state nation that has claimed the right to sovereignty from a federal state. The reason for this is that provinces within the Canadian federal state have particular exclusive constitutional powers, which includes the legislation of social programs. Historically, provincial social policy legislation included health care policies, family policies (affordable

Islam is a growing religion, however there are still closed minded people in the world, and in Canada. The Quebec government wants to pass a law that states government employees will not be allowed to wear religious symbols to work. This seems to set Canada back years as a country that is supposed to accepting of all people and all faiths.
It is without a doubt that Canada is considered one of the most welcoming and peaceful countries in the entire world. Individuals fleeing conflicts from different continents, on opposites sides of the planet, view Canada as a safe haven, a place to thrive, succeed, and safely live life to its fullest potential. Excellent healthcare, education, and proper gun control are just some of the many priviledges freely given to those who are lucky enough to call Canada their home. The Rights and Freedoms of Canadians are incomparable to those of individuals living in other countries, and with freedom of religion being one of them, it becomes crucial that we respect and show acceptance of different religions. However, it is saddening to see that in
Issues involving the apparel enforcements, including sexism, repressed self- identity, and punishment issues will be discussed within this paper. Literature Review The First Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the creation of laws offensive to religious groups and ensures their ability to freely practice, grants the freedom of speech, comply the freedom of the press, and allows the right to assemble peacefully. Adopted on December 15, 1791, it has served the United States of America for over one hundred years. Freedom of expression is a controversial topic when applied to the school dress code.
This projected Canadian image is not necessarily the practice in Canada. Multiculturalism does not necessarily equal equality and acceptance of other ethnicities and races on an individual level as well as on a government level. On the 18th of October 2017 Quebec passed the provincial Bill 62, known as ‘religious neutrality’ legislation. The main change that this law will introduce is that individuals must uncover

Furthermore, I will enter into the question how employers and employees should handle religious discrimination in the workplace. Since discrimination in the workplace cannot only cause costly lawsuits, but also has an impact on the moral of the employees, I will name some preventive measures. After that, I will switch to the employee’s view and give the reader an idea of what an employee should consider when filing a charge because of religious discrimination.
