Recommendations that best support continuing education of nurses
Nurses are the largest group of workers in health sector (Lowson, 1986) and nurses are the only group in this sector that is expected to provide same level of service in hospitals throughout year and as they work closely to patients they are expected to be expert and competent.(Ofosu, 1993) Continuing education and training are required not only for re-licensure and certification but for knowledge and career growth of nurses. Continuing education and training ‘prepare and enable nurses to adapt in changing scenario of health and medicine’, they learn continuously about emerging medication, diagnostic tests and technologies.

For continuing education program firstly goals established compatible with hospitals mission, then specific objectives consistent with goals are set and with determination of course of action, resources are made assessable. Continuing education and training of nurses is twofold, academic education and professional development.
Academic education is facilitated by most of institutes of medicine. These institution overcome the barriers that nurses face when consider to continue their academic education. Nurses get the flexibility in shift and on-call scheduling for pursuing degrees.
Nurses can’t limit to pursue a degree as their working place is complex and dynamic with constant change in medicine and technology, they do need to update themselves and many a times because of shortage of nurses they even have to work in other specialties also so they have to be competent enough to perform duties in almost all specialties. The IOM report had four key messages needed for advancing the future of nursing. “Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training; achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression; be full partners, with physicians and other health care professionals, …and; effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and an improved information infrastructure” (Institute of Medicine, 2011). The report also included eight recommendations needed to facilitate the necessary changes to in the nursing profession so meet to demands of the healthcare reform.
The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. Challenges with making a mandatory education system might stem from the diversity of the nursing profession and the continuing education. One example of the diversity in nursing would be the needs of a Urology nurse might be drastically different from the needs of a school nurse. In the United States, the history of Career and Technical Education evolved within four major periods. First, the Awakening period which began in 1776-1826, when the right to a free public education was expressed. During this era, educational opportunities in labor and industrial education were being demanded. The rising working class began to press for an education that were more appropriate for their labor and industry’s needs (Awakening 1776-1826, 1976). Even Benjamin Franklin who represented the Awakening middle class was on board with the rise of technical and vocational education which were taught primarily by private masters or contracted apprenticeships (Cohen, 1976).
Nursing practice holds different levels of degree for nurses that include Associate degree in Nursing, Bachelor degree in nursing, and Master degree in Nursing. Even though the degree level in nursing are to provide basic care to the patients, but the level of competency and knowledge in the profession is different. Nursing practice in advance level play important role to provide quality of care to patients. Many health care settings require nurses to earn baccalaureate degree level to apply for RN position. The effects on nursing education includes a growth in the number of higher cadre of nurses equipped with leadership and community health skills and knowledge. Institutions with higher trained nurses have recorded less mortality rate (AACN, 2014). The growth in number of nurses would positively impact on the nursing shortage thus leading to improvement on care outcome (AACN, 2014). They provide complex care, recognize symptoms and changes when the ever shrinking physician pool is not available, advocate for patient and families, and care deeply for their patients recovery. Learning is considered a long term goal as it helps in continuity and evolution professionally (Thibault, 2011). It is important for me to be updated for best possible care provision. I will achieve this by developing interest to study towards attainment of highest levels of education for example PHD programs, attending education forums hosted by different universities, workshops and health seminars. My other long term ambitions include joining nurses’ professional organizations, administration duties and management skill acquisition and job promotions.
Nurses need a seat at the table to ensure they have a voice to influence and shape their future. Nursing is constantly evolving and changing, and employers continue to raise the bar for nursing. Nurses understand early in their career the importance of continuing education to enhance future career opportunities. Professional development relates to how nurses continue to broaden their knowledge, skills, and expertise throughout their career, therefore enhancing their professional practice. This advanced knowledge is not only career boosting, but also opens a seat at the table giving nurses the power to make decisions and effect changes. Professional development and continuing education are more important to nurses now than ever before to keep up with the rapid changes in healthcare today. For nurses to achieve a higher education for nurses .the reasonable rate is a big factor for weather the nurse has to continue on higher education or not. The goal of IOM research outlines to increase the doctoral degree of nurses by 2020. The IOM research also point out the problems for a position in a rural area and recommends incentives for such traditional educational expenses which is going to benefits both the patient and the nurse.
In the current health care system change has become constant so it has been recognised that lifelong learning is even more imperative for nurses to ensure that they can develop their skills to keep pace with these changes and improve their performance. Several years ago in 2008 the RWJF and the IOM collaborated for two years to discern the future needs of the nursing profession. Most importantly, the objective was to outline the critical actions needed to ensure nursing was ready to seamlessly move towards the future. This was no easy task as nurses work in such diverse settings such as outpatient areas, acute care settings, the community, and long term settings to name a few. Couple this with the fact that nurses have a variety of educational avenues such as the associates, diploma, or bachelor’s degree open to them to achieve the status of registered nurse (Institute of Medicine, 2010). All of this considered, the committee did design four key messages regarding the future of nursing as key in the transformation of health care as evidenced in their "Future of Nursing" report.
