Pros and Cons of Social Learning
While social learning is a good approach for inspiring creativity and innovation and improving performance, it has various challenges. The major challenge is uptake by employees due to perception of value and self-promotion. In addition to cultural resistance, lack of expertise, lack of support from management and security concerns minimize adoption of social interventions in learning (HCM Advisory Group, 2012). Further, the use of social learning technologies strains information technology infrastructure, creates integration challenges and creates the need for additional support. While there are calls for evaluation of social learning to enhance its effectiveness, there is a challenge due to the numerous processes and outcomes that have been proposed to support social learning (Cundill & Rodela, 2012, pp. 7-14). This assertion creates uncertainty regarding to systematic utilization of social learning in the entire organization. Although organizations can monitor the success and impact of social learning interventions, lack of clear tools make it difficult to justify investment. According to Lebel, Grothmann and Siebenhüner (2010), social learning can be used in developing evaluation and monitoring criteria for determining edaptiveness. However, to ensure long term sustainability of the interventions, both in interest/ownership and scalability, there is a need to self-evolve the purpose and supporting processes to become organic endogenous rather than directing social learning (Garmendia and Stagl, 2010, pp. 1712-1722). Failure to evolve would render the interventions ineffective within a short period. Time is also a critical factor in social learning. Sufficient time should be allowed to learn new knowledge and behavior change. There are often some external factors that pressure social learning and such pressures should be countered to ensure a successful learning process. Institutionalism of social learning is the major challenge in ensuring continuity of social learning approaches and in enhancing chances of changes approved by the management
