Sometimes, parents and children do not see eye to eye on every issue. In the passage from Confetti Girl and Tortilla Sun, the narrators have points of view that are different from those of their parents. In Confetti Girl, the father and daughter have different views on English class, which leads to tension. In Tortilla Sun, the daughter and mother have different judgement on the mother going to Costa Rica. In both passages, the children and parents have their own separate opinions on topics because they have grown up in different times.

First, after the mother tells Izzy she is going to Costa Rica, Izzy gets upset. She verbalized, ‘“Mom wouldn’t leave me. Right? ‘But that's only three days.’I stepped away from mom and the shards of tile. ‘I don’t have a choice.’ ‘But what am I supposed to do? That’s three whole month's”’(paragraph 11-14). Izzy gets upset with her mother due to the fact that her mother is leaving her in New Mexico for three month,s while she goes to Costa Rica. Her mother knows that it is going to benefit them, and she is doing it to help Izzy. Next, Izzy’s mother and Izzy argue over going to New Mexico. The mother announces, ‘“You’re going to New Mexico and that’s final.’ I swallowed and tried not to cry ‘Why do you always get to decide everything?”’(paragraphs 28 and 29) The mother wants the narrator to go to New Mexico and spend time with her Nana while she is in Costa Rica, but the narrator does not want to go to New Mexico and wants to stay home and she thinks that her mother is ruining her summer. Finally, the mother and narrator argue after they were talking about the narrator's plans. The mother says, “Honey, you can make friends at your new school in the fall. In Confetti Girl, the narrator and the father have different interests. The father has a great interest in the English Language, but his daughter does not. In Tortilla Sun, the narrator and her mother have have tension over Izzy’s mother going to Costa Rica. Parents and adolescents may not seem eye to eye on everything. Children and adolescents seem to have tension with their parents because they were born in different generations. Conflict between the main characters in fictional stories can be so thick, you need a razor-sharp knife to cut it; that is definitely the case in the two literary texts I recently analyzed titled “Confetti Girl” by Diana Lopez and “Tortilla Sun” by Jennifer Cervantes. In the first text, tensions mount when a social butterfly of a teenage girl and her oblivious father lock horns over the subject of homework. In the second passage, drama runs high when a lonely child and her career-driven mother battle over the concept of spending the summer apart. On an everyday basis teens all around the world fight and disagree with their parents. In the passages Confetti Girl and Tortilla Sun this very thing is clearly demonstrated. Both stories feature two teenage girls that have lost one of their parents. They both now face the daily struggle of agreeing and relating to their remaining parent. In Confetti Girl, the narrator is constantly overlooked and out shadowed by her father’s favorite thing, books and literacy.
Could you imagine what your home life would be like if you and your parents didn’t agree on anything? There would be constant fighting and tension would be everywhere. This is the case of two young girls in the stories “Confetti Girl” and “Tortilla Sun”. The narrators in these stories are the young girls, and they don’t agree with their parent on very important topics in these stories. Because the narrator and their parent don’t have the same point of view in these stories, tension builds up. In, “Confetti Girl”, the narrator disagrees with her father and questions how much he cares about her and in “Tortilla Girl”, the narrator questions if her mother was taking her into account of her new plans. She felt that breaking the standards placed on her by her cultural norms it would displease her tradition loving father. He felt that Cisneros should find a husband and not focus on her education so much. Cisneros writes “I am the only daughter in the Mexican family of six sons” (Cisneros 366). This not only exemplifies the internal family issues of being the only female, but also the external problems of the norms placed on women in a Hispanic culture to be an ideal wife. No two mother and daughter relationships are alike. After reading “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker and “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan I realized that the two stories had the same subject matter: mother and daughter relationships. These two stories show different cultures, generations and parenting methods. Although the two mothers act differently, they are both ultimately motivated by the same desire: to be a good parent. In addition, while researching related articles, I realized that there were two recurring themes of mothers and daughters: respect and diverse ways of parenting.
“Girl” written by Jamaica Kincaid is essentially a set of instructions given by an adult, who is assumed to be the mother of the girl, who is laying out the rules of womanhood, in Caribbean society, as expected by the daughter’s gender. These instructions set out by the mother are related to topics including household chores, manners, cooking, social conduct, and relationships. The reader may see these instructions as demanding, but these are a mother’s attempt, out of care for the daughter, to help the daughter to grow up properly. The daughter does not appear to have yet reached adolescence, however, her mother believes that her current behavior will lead her to a life of promiscuity. The mother postulates that her daughter can be saved from a life of promiscuity and ruin by having domestic knowledge that would, in turn also, empower her as a productive member in their community and the head of her future household. This is because the mother assumes that a woman’s reputation and respectability predisposes the quality of a woman’s life in the community.
In the short story, “Girl,” the narrator describes certain tasks a woman should be responsible for based on the narrator’s culture, time period, and social standing. This story also reflects the coming of age of this girl, her transition into a lady, and shows the age gap between the mother and the daughter. The mother has certain beliefs that she is trying to pass to her daughter for her well-being, but the daughter is confused by this regimented life style. The author, Jamaica Kincaid, uses various tones to show a second person point of view and repetition to demonstrate what these responsibilities felt like, how she had to behave based on her social standing, and how to follow traditional customs.

Unrealistically, the narrator believes that she would be of use to her father more and more as she got older. However, as she grows older, the difference between boys and girls becomes more clear and conflicting to her.
“Girl” makes the impression that the mother wants the daughter to take over the “women’s” work around the house as well as she tells her which day to wash the white clothes Monday, wash the colored clothes on Tuesday, and she is teaching her how to iron her father’s clothes the way he likes them done and how to sew on a button; “This is how to make a button-hole for the button you have just sewed on.” (380) The mother also is teaching her daughter how to cook for the family. “Cook pumpkin fritters in very hot sweet oil,” (380) so that everyone will eat them. The mother also discusses table manners, “always eat your food in such a way that it won’t turn some-one else’s stomach.”
Although, parents try to be fair there are always subtle differences picked up by the children, whether one is preferred better over the other sibling. These occurrences are known as parents picking favorites. Of course, every mother loves her children equally, but tends to favor one over the other simply because he or she is older, smarter, holds more responsibility, or just better behaved than the others, the reason being always varies. Every sibling is different, each with his or her unique personalities and ways of expression. “I did something I never done before: I hugged Maggie to me, then dragged her on into the room, snatched the quilts out of (Dee) Miss Wangero’s hands and dumped them into Maggie’s lap. Maggie just sat there on my bed with her mouth open.” (Walker, Everyday Use) In the previous excerpt from the story Mama, in a sense, picked a favorite daughter out of the two. In this case, it was Maggie when deciding who should have the quilts. In the short story “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker, Walker describes her two daughters. Maggie and Dee are sisters. Throughout the short story, Walker reveals the two sister’s differences in character and personalities through the use of language (words) and actions as the story develops. The reader learns more about each sister through the mother’s words.
The author uses imagery, contrasting diction, tones, and symbols in the poem to show two very different sides of the parent-child relationship. The poem’s theme is that even though parents and teenagers may have their disagreements, there is still an underlying love that binds the family together and helps them bridge their gap that is between them.
One example of this would be the dissonance between two generations of Lightwood kids and their parents. These kids would be Isabelle Lightwood, Alexander Lightwood, Max Lightwood, and Jace Herondale. (Max being deceased, and Jace being the adopted son.) Their parents? Maryse and Robert Lightwood.
