Augustine titled his deeply philosophical and theological autobiography Confessions to implicate two aspects of the form the work would take. To confess, in Augustine's time, meant both to give an account of one's faults to God and to praise God (to speak one's love for God). These two aims come together in the Confessions in an elegant but complex sense: Augustine narrates his ascent from sinfulness to faithfulness not simply for the practical edification of his readers, but also because he believes that narrative to be itself a story of God's greatness and of the fundamental love all things have for Him. Thus, in the Confessions form equals content to a large degreethe natural form for Augustine's story of redemption to take would be a direct address to God, since it is God who must be thanked for such redemption. (That said, a direct address to God was a highly original form for Augustine to have used at the time). This idea should also help us understand the apparently lopsided and unusual structure of the text. The first nine Books of the Confessions are devoted to the story of Augustine's life up to his mother's death, but the last four Books make a sudden, lengthy departure into pure theology and philosophy. St. Augustine’s Confessions is written through the Christian perspective of religion. Christianity is founded on the idea that there is one God who oversees all actions. Though all actions are observed by a higher power, God instills in us a free will. As Christians we are free to make our own decisions whether right or wrong. In his Biography St Augustine expresses that he feels like a sinner. He struggles with the fact that he is a thrill seeker. He loves to watch blood sports. He watches gladiators fight to the death and commit murder. Not only does he watch, but he enjoys observing these acts. He is also expressing his sins in his biography when he writes about stealing, which is another sin. He steals pears for fun. 7-12- Again Augustines thoughts on God reflect that of the religious teachings of his day, namely those of the Neoplatonists. For example he refuses to speculate on how the soul joins the body to become an infant and even follows Plato when he suggests that this life could possibly be some kind of “living death”. He then goes into an examination of his infancy, which he depicts as a quite pitiful state. He described himself as a sinful and thoughtless creature who made demands on everyone, wept unceasingly, and gave everyone a hard time that took care of him. Though very brutal in his self examination, he later states that he does not hold himself accountable for any of these sinful acts because he simply can’t remember them.

Confessions by Augustine is a theological autobiography about confessions. What did it mean to confess? To confess in Augustine’s time was meant both to give an account of fault to God and to praise God. Augustine talks about his sinfulness and his faithfulness to his God. Confessions is a story of Augustine’s life, starting from his birth to his mothers death. “You have made us for yourselves, O God, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”(Confessions, 1.1.1)
In the article, Augustine 's husband employs various types of control along with his physical abuse. In the realm of emotional abuse, he attacks her self-esteem and makes her feel guilty. He describes her as “manipulative, incompetent, secretive…” and “weak.” Her husband makes efforts to belittle her by attacking her character. Because of his status as a well-educated social worker who studied people’s mind, Augustine buys into his credibility and believes his hurtful words. According to him, she “counteract[s] the weakness with misplaced aggressiveness.” By saying this, he attributes that frustration and anger that she might feel from his abuse to her own downfalls. In his mind he is not the reason she is aggressive, her weakness is. Isolation, in conjunction with male privilege, plays a role in this abuse when he berates her for hiring a babysitter so she can shop for lining material. Because she is a woman, he places the expectation of her tending to the children solely on her and says that she “ought to be with them”. Her contact with the outside world is limited as she admonished for not staying home with the kids. In addition, he utilizes blaming when he says “ he was never like this before her married [her]” and that she “do[es] it to her [her]self.” The excuse is that something that she did drove him to respond in that
James Hogg was born in 1770 in Scotland. His family was a devoted to both farming and religion. His father was an Elder at the church, so he always grew up in a religious background. In 1824 Hogg wrote the critically acclaimed and controversial novel, The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. The novel provided satire on the Calvinist Doctrine of predestination. Predestination is the belief that God has since the start of time, pre ordained the saved. Basically, it is pre-decided who will go to Heaven and who will go to Hell. Throughout the Confessions, Augustine provides a journal of his life. Education played a major role in his development. Augustine the character’s education began from the moment he started to communicate. He later went on to be formally educated before being removed from school for financial difficulties. Augustine the narrator believes his education a granted will from God; however, at times, Augustine the character seemed to take advantage of this will. Through this ability, granted by God’s will, Augustine the character was able to become literate.
A false confession is an “admission plus a post admission narrative of a crime that the confessor did not commit” (Leo, 2009). Research shows that individuals falsely confess to crimes that they have not committed (Drizin & Leo, 2004; Kassin et al., 2010). Interrogations have been seen to lead to false confessions, which individuals are then incarcerated for crimes they did not commit. Some of these individuals are then later exonerated because of DNA evidence proving their innocence. We don’t finish the Confessions and marvel at the depravity of the young St. Augustine, or even at the incredible mercy of God for taking in such a self-proclaimed sinner. The impression the text leaves us with is that of the immense benefits the Lord can bestow on man, and the great extent to which St. Augustine was able to profit from this. Therefore, what St. Augustine had sought in God, he has found. The inner void is filled, he has a loyal nonjudgmental companion and protector for this life and the next, and he has found a potential scapegoat for all of his possible future mistakes and flaws—as well as someone to pray to and unconditionally praise.
