COMPUTER GRAPHICS
INTRODUCTION
Computer graphics is mainly concerned with producing images or sequences of images (animation) using a computer. The hardware and software systems are used to make these images. Producing these Photo-realistic images is an extremely complicated task, but this field has great demand because of the limitless variety of applications. Computer graphics has grown enormously over the past two decades, and many software systems have been developed for generating computer graphics of various sorts. This includes the systems producing 3-dimensional models of the scene, rendering software for drawing these images, and the associated user interface software and hardware[1].
HISTORY
The field of computer graphics was introduced in early 1960’s with Ivan Sutherland. This began with the development of the very simple software for performing the necessary mathematical transformations to produce simple line-drawings of 2- and 3-dimensional scenes.
As days passed, the capacity and speed of computer technology improved, successively more sophisticated computers were achievable[1].
Now, it is possible to produce images that are practically indistinguishable from photographic images[1].
TYPES OF COMPUTER GRAPHICS
There are two types of graphics:
VECTOR GRAPHICS:
It is Used in display devices of ’60s. The components used are:
• Components:
– Display buffer: stores display list
– Display processor: executes commands
– CRT: beam deflected accordingly
• Advantages:
– smooth lines
• Drawbacks:
– Performance
– no filled regions [2]
RASTER GRAPHICS
Raster is a matrix of pixels representing screen space.
• Primitives stored in buffer (memory) as pixels
• Video controller scans out buffer
• Beam’s intensity determi...

Vector based – Vector based software is important when it comes to creating and editing images as these types of software allow you to compose and edit many different vector graphic images interactively on a computer and save them in one of many different formats such as EPS, VML, SVG and many more different
Two dimensional computer generated imagery was used to express depth and to produce new shades that could not be depicted just through animation and drawing.

It is well known that in the past, Renaissance artists received their training in an atmosphere of artists and mathematicians studying and learning together (Emmer 2). People also suggest that the art of the future will depend on new technologies, computer graphics in particular (Emmer 1). There are many mathematical advantages to using computer graphics. They can help to visualize phenomena and to understand how to solve new problems (Emmer 2). “The use of ‘visual computers’ gives rise to new challenges for mathematicians. At the same time, computer graphics might in the future be the unifying language between art and science” (Emmer 3).
The computing industry as a whole becomes more prosperous, exciting and attractive as an employment prospect each day. It spans a wide range of modern applications, as does my interest in the subject. I see computing science as a gateway into new realms of computing, where the highly challenging and demanding work may reap rewards of an equivalent level.
The Role of Computer Generated Imagery in the Film Industry Computer Generated Imagery is the special effects used in motion pictures to create a visual depiction of an illusion that can not be easily created in real life. Directors of major motion pictures have been using these technologies since the early days of the personal computer. Early on, when and special effects were in their beginning stages, it was difficult to make efficient and effective effects that are well accepted by the movie critics and the general public. An evolution of special effects and the introduction of computerized animation brought the standards for movie effects to a higher level. The development of new methods of Computer Generated Imagery for less money and more effective than in the past has allowed even fairly low budget movies to incorporate such technology.
Computer Generated Images, or CGI, is a form of Computer Graphics design, and animations, that make a image look 3D. These images are shown all throughout the media world, industry, and business, such as print media, tv, movies, pictures, commercials, etc. CGI’s have improved rapidly on software that helps our world improve on computer generated imaging. CGI software’s is used to make graphical design for purposes like movies in the theater. CGI companies and software’s, has made the technology age, and its computer has increase in speeds, and has allowed computer graphics programmers, and other companies, to make better quality films, games, and electronic digital photos on their CPU’s, or laptops. Because of the new advancement in software technology in CGI, and graphics designing, it has brought new internet religious cultures, its own new experiences, such as celebrities, and newer technological vocabulary. Technology advancement has increased so much that CGI’s has lead to the new beginning or era of virtual cinema photography.
Getting paid depends on the months, days, weeks, or years that you work. Both jobs don’t get paid the same, because there are different things being used by both jobs. Graphic designers and artists are the same in some ways, but they are also very different from each other. Artists usually use paint sets and graphic designers use technology. But in some cases, artists use technology too. It only reflects and depends on what the person uses for their job. Graphic designers are the same way, but also use more advertisements than artists do.
...y conceivable scene can be computer generated if resources are committed to achieve the desired goal. Technology is set to continue to revolutionise the film industry for many years to come (Huang 2004).
The final step is called rendering. During rendering, the computer calculates the effect of light, color, and texture on the model's surface. For a film or video, the computer will produce a two-dimensional digital picture of the characters for each frame of the animation. The computer artist usually adjusts many visual effects, such as camera focus and transparency, during the rendering phase.
Animations is one of the most developed fields in multimedia and design, used in many areas of industry, most especial in the film industry, advertising and promotion, education and also in the game industry where they creates a lot of game using 3D animation. 3D animation consists of varying properties of a 3 dimensional scene defined in numerical quantities. A 3D model can change properties such as position, rotation, shape and surface style. An animated 3D scene is defined by the change of these numerical properties through time. Apart from 3D objects, a scene contains a camera (point of view) and lights which can also be animated. In order to create an animation each of the 3D scene needs to be rendered to create a frame. However, people are not been alert on how it started and what bring it to history. In this chapter, it will show a short brief of 3D history, techniques used and it evolution from 2D to 3D and also the storyline definition.
Computer Graphics is the bond between humans and computers. Computer graphics is a large field that branches into almost all fields of computer science; however its roots are young. Computer graphics has massively grown over the past 40 years and is now our primary means of communication with computer applications. Do to technological limitations in the 1950s, computer graphics began as a small, specialized field. The Whirlwind project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is marked as the origin of computer graphics (Machover 14).

The fist computer, known as the abacus, was made of wood and parallel wires on which beads were strung. Arithmetic operations were performed when the beads were moved along the wire according to “programming” rules that had to be memorized by the user (Soma, 14). The second earliest computer, invented by Blaise Pascal in 1694, was a “digital calculating machine.” Pascal designed this first known digital computer to help his father, who was a tax collector. Pascal’s computer could only add numbers, and they had to be entered by turning dials (Soma, 32). It required a manual process like its ancestor, the abacus. Automation was introduced in the early 1800’s by a mathematics professor named Charles Babbage. He created an automatic calculation machine that was steam powered and stored up to 1000 50-digit numbers. Unlike its two earliest ancestors, Babbage’s invention was able to perform various operations. It relied on cards with holes punched in them, which are called “punch cards.” These cards carried out the programming and storing operations for the machine. Unluckily, Babbage’s creation flopped due to the lack of mechanical precision and the lack of demand for the product (Soma, 46). The machine could not operate efficiently because technology was t adequate to make the machine operate efficiently Computer interest dwindled for many years, and it wasn’t until the mid-1800’s that people became interested in them once again.
The science of Virtual Reality has stated its presence in the media and now it is turning the eyes to see the new generation of games and 3D application.
