In the novel Walk Two Moons, two stories are going on at once: Sal’s story and Phoebe’s story. The stories are similar and different in many ways. Both characters and the reader learn important life lessons throughout the course of the book. Most of these come from mysterious notes that Phoebe keeps finding on her doorstep throughout the story. When Sal’s mom leaves, there is a lot of feelings from Sal and her mom. Since Sal and her dad were always being so nice, Sal’s mom felt like she wasn’t living up to their standard, although she says she just needed to “discover herself.” Phoebe’s mom simply wanted to go see her son, Mike, who had been adopted. Both Sal and Phoebe’s mother's ran away but their actions were completely different. Phoebe goes into a frenzy saying that her mom was “Captured by the lunatic,” but Sal thinks that her mom would have stayed if she loved her more. Other people that she knows go through the same loss, and people she loves die. As a result of this, Sal begins to realize that although death is a terrible thing, but it is a natural part of life and by the end of the story she learns to accept loss. Evidence of this is that at the beginning of the story, Sal says: “It isn’t normal to die. It isn’t normal. It’s terrible.” but towards the end of the story, she accepts that her mom is dead by saying “She isn’t actually gone at all. She’s singing in the trees.” Another thing that changes in Sal is that when her mom was there, she felt like a mirror to her mom’s feelings, but then she realizes that she can have her own feelings too. At the start she says “If mom was happy, I was happy.” By the end she thinks: “I am happy at this moment in time. I was surprised that I knew all this by myself, without my mother

Throughout the story “Walk Two Moons” written by Sharon Creech, Mrs.Winterbottom is faced with internal and external conflicts that lead her to change.
Sal’s journey reflects that of a heroine; the journey helps her discover who she really is and she comes home to share what she has learned afterward. Sal explains, “When my mother had been there, I was like a mirror. If she was happy, I was happy. If she was sad, I was sad. For the first few days after she left, I felt numb, non-feeling. I didn’t know how to feel”(Creech 37). When her mother left, Sal had no reflection. She was forced to start experiencing her feelings independently. Sometimes to start feeling again, one needs to leave what is familiar to them. The journey she took healed this numbness she felt. Furthermore, her identity and feelings were given context through Phoebe’s story and shaped by her own reflections of the
Afterward, she sums it up: "The complete list of losses. There they are. And it helps, I've found, if I can count them off, so to speak”. That same night, when Dede falls asleep, things are different; she does not hear the spirits of her sisters running through the house. Her telling the of the story of a great loss over to herself, honors the memory of sacrifice and she can find the sense of closure with the heroic tragedy of her dear brave sisters.
One of the main themes from Walk Two Moons is there’s always hope. In the book two of the main characters are Sal and Phoebe. They both experience a big change in their lifetime. Both of their mothers leave That caused them to say stuff that wouldn’t do if there moms where there. In the book Sal says,

Persistence pushed him to face his fears and continue the walk. In the middle of the walk to the camp, Salva watched his uncle get robbed and killed. Salva’s self-confidence diminished. On top of his insecurity, the group he traveled with complained about how the Salva was a waste to their limited food supply and abandoned him. However, Salva realized, “There is no one left to help me”.
Shortly after Dolores' high school graduation, Dolores' mother is killed when she is hit by a semi truck. Dolores blames herself and reasons that her mother's death must be Dolores' punishment for being a horrible daughter. She recalls what her mother said on the night of her death: "You've made me so ... tired" (135). She remembers how awful she was to her mother during the months before her death (138). She feels that she should have died instead of her mother. She bargains with God to bring her mother back and take her instead (138).

Her mother’s beauty was everlasting until she died at 81 years old. Also, she talked about how she stopped taking her medication and then gradually got better. She had been off drugs for 21 days. So now she could be able to do much more. All that she wanted was to make her husband happy and see how the church she liked and the preacher who would talk to her.
