A nude woman reclining is a piece of art that has been apart of many art movements throughout history. Édouard Manet's Olympia, and Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres' Le Grande Odalisque, are two pieces that are apart of this history.
The paintings are very similar, they both make use of the same medium, have the women nude in reclining positions, and incorporate them both staring at the audience, however they differ in art movements, tone, and artistic technique, the similarities and differences in both these paintings emphasize the vision of the world both Manet and Ingres lived in. Ingres piece was apart of the early Romantic art movement, because of this his art is depicted as softer, with a cooler color scheme. Manet was apart of the realist movement, and although he drew inspiration from Titian's Venus of Urbino this woman is not meant to mimic the goddess of love, she is meant to be very real, a prostitute who has done well for herself and is staring down all judgments. Aside from the symbolic meaning of the paintings, the both also have very different techniques. Ingres painting has smoother softer lines, and he purposely made the woman's back extra long and out of proportion because he found a woman's back to be a beautiful part of her. Manet however has a very blocky painting technique, which looks patchy instead of smooth. This also goes back to the art movement they were apart of, for Manet, depicting realistic life settings, wouldn't have wanted anything to be too smooth and polished because that's not life. Ingres' and Manet both painted very similar pieces in terms of medium, position of the women, and the fact that the women stare at their audience. As time kept passing, more and more magnificent sculptures were made by numerous artists. One of the most memorable sculpture was Aphrodite of Knidos, goddess of love and beauty. Back in the Late Classical Period, the civilians were only used to seeing ideal male nude bodies, but Praxiteles decided to make a different approach and sculpted the first female nude. Because he obviously had never seen a goddess before, he used his imagination and sculpted bathing Aphrodite as humanlike possible. He did not make it look idealistic, but instead made it beautiful with flaws.

For my assignment, I will be comparing the two pieces of art titled Louis XIV painted by Hyacinthe Rigaud and Portrait of Marie Antoinette With Her Children by Marie-Louise-Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun. I will be analyzing and breaking down the different techniques used in both paintings and explaining the similarities between them as well. Though the paintings contain the same family throughout both, there is a clear imbalance in power and something very normal for this time period. I will be elaborating on the difference in social status between the two paintings, even though they are the same family.
Although both Fragonard’s and David’s work convey different ideals through their style of painting, they are still able to use light in a very similar form. The viewer’s attention is directed on a specific point in the painting through the use of light. Both artists cast a spotlight on the figure or action in the painting that they want the viewer to especially notice. It is what each artist decides to focus on that makes his work is different from the other. A young woman on a swing who enjoys the pleasures of life is clearly where Fragonard wants to direct the viewer’s attention. However, David focuses attention on a male figure, specifically Socrates. How does the use of light help the viewer understand the ideals of each form of art? Social reformer, Henry Ward Beecher, once said “Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.” This quote is perfect because it shows how no two artists can ever be the same, like my two artists for example, Georges-Pierre Seurat (1859-1891) and Claude Monet (1840-1926). Both Seurat and Monet were impressionist European painters however they’re style and technique were very different. One painting Seurat is known for is A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884-1886). Monet on the other hand is known for many different works of art, but La Grenouillere (1869) is one of his bests.

Although from the same artist group, these Impressionists originated from backgrounds that seemed worlds apart. Claude Monet, known as the “Master Impressionist” varied the themes in his artwork more than any other artist did. Monet’s work “Impression Sunrise”, of which the term “Impressionist” originates also gives rise to the title “Master Impressionist”. Edgar Degas started his career as an artist with nothing in common with Monet but the era in which they lived. From themes to brushstrokes and choices of colours, Monet and Degas started their relationship as Impressionist artists on opposite ends of the earth. However, towards the climax of their lives as artists, Monet aided Degas in adopting Impressionist Aesthetic qualities.
Impressionism is very pretty and complicated. It was from 1860 to 1910. Monet is the perfect Impressionist. Impressionism had its basic tenants. Their subject matter was the middle upper class, the city, and leisurely activities. They painted on en plein air which means they painted outdoors. They painted in snow, rain, storm, just in order to record directly the effects of light and atmosphere. They painted with strokes and touches of pure color by using a great deal of white and rarely black. They recorded the shifting play of light on the surface of objects and the effect light has on the eye without concern for the physicality of the object being painted. They were influenced by Japanese art and photography. One of Monet’s works is titled Water Lilies. The medium of this work is oil on canvas. Monet is an impressionist. He puts up pure color just describe the water. He said, when you go out paint, the impression of the scene not the exact scene.
In these two exquisite works of art or shall we call them the grand masterpieces of their era’s. Both Jacques-Louis David’s The Death of Marat and Michelangelo’s Pieta flawlessly reflects the untimely deaths of two significant figures that we know of today. The two figures comprised of Jesus Christ in Michelangelo’s Pieta and Jean-Paul Marat in Jacques-Louis David’s The Death of Marat. In the two pieces, we see that the pair of artists portrays the figures in a divine and yet virtuous way. One work of art almost mimicking the other, yet there is still some differences between the characteristics of each piece still making it its own individual self.
