The topic for this essay is about the United States, may or may not change their measuring system from English to Metric. There are four countries that use the English system for measuring objects. The four countries are the United States, Alaska, Liberia, and Myanmar (Burma). The countries that use the English system think they should just keep their system. The countries that use the Metric system think that everyone should use the Metric system. The two systems are the same but they can be converted by using formulas. The advantage of the Metric system will be explained in the next paragraph.
The advantages of the United States to learn the Metric system is that everyone would use the same measurements all around the world. If you went to a different country, you wouldn't need to use your phone to waste your time converting. Only 4 countries use the English System and in the world, there are 191 countries that use the Metric System. Would the four countries or the 191 countries win? In the article “Should the United States Go Metric?” it

If United States convert to Metric System they need to be fluent and memorizing the whole metric system. If they already understand the English system, why will they waste time learning on a system they don’t even need? In the article “Should the United States Go Metric?” it states that“ People in the United States are comfortable with the English system of measurement. If the country converted to metric, citizens might have a hard time buying products for calculating distance. Businesses in the United States rely on the English system.” If the United States replace English System the machine's system needs to change to. It would be difficult to change the system of the machines to Metric system. In the next paragraph, you would read my opinion if I want the United States to change Metric System or
The United States is the only country who does not use the metric system (meters, kilometers, litters); instead they use the customary system (inches, feet). For example, if you will have to drive in another country you will not understand how far another grocery store because the sign tells you in meters not in miles.
In conclusion, the U.S. should switch their system of measurement to metric because many people would think it easier for themselves and their society. America should change to the metric system because it will promote more jobs in America, it would increase relations with other countries, and it is easier to understand and apply. There are many reasons that America should switch to the metric system and in the future Americans will probably say the word meter without knowing that before, they would have said the word foot.
Some people may say that the metric system is one of the greatest tools that were ever invented. “The spread of the metric system is a triumph not of science but international capitalism,” (Marclano, 2015). If the US were to convert to the metric system we would just be making world more similar than it already is, and we need to cherish and save our differences. The measurement that the US is using now is more important and essential to the people than the metric system. “It allows us to recognize that distance, weight, and volume can be measured and conceived of in more than one way,” (Marclano, 2015). The United States has been using the metric system already and is increasing its use of the metric system. The metric system that we use now is based on the metric units in some areas, and is becoming more and more like the SI every day. Some people say that it is good to transfer because it is important to foreign trade and the influence of technology. “…The increasing competitiveness of other nations and the demands of global marketplaces…,” (Gentry, 2002). If the United States does not make the change than it handicap the Nation’s industry and economy. A lot of people in the United States are highly skilled in math and science, so by transitioning to the metric system it will makes these subjects more effective. These advantages and disadvantages of using the metric system play a big role when it comes to thinking about initially making the
The Metric system is used across the world, all except for the United States of America and two other countries. Switching to Metric can mean more business opportunities for America from other countries. The Metric system can be the link for fashion designers to have more opportunities in other countries, or scientists as well. Because of the loss of jobs due to not using the Metric system in America, the country will not advance. The biggest argument against changing is the people, a strong source that should not be ignored. All the immediate benefits from ethical, emotional and logical views show there are many sources that outline the benefits to why America should change to the Metric system and why
Mr. Sumpter’s decision to establish an English-only policy at his school was not valid. The reading stated that Mr. Sumpter explained to his staff he was feeling pressure from “some people” at the district office to establish the English-only policy. However, he did not explain who “some people” were. Who were these people? If those people were the school district’s board members or superintendent, Mr. Simpter’s hands were pretty much tied. On the other hand, if the people expressing the need for English-only policies were other administrators from the school district, Mr. Simpter could have challenged their opinions on the need to change his school’s policies.
The United States of America were not always the United States of America. Long before the United States became an independent nation, we were under the rule of the British monarchy. Before that, we were an unknown land that was inhabited primarily by I...
The society will be less divided and will function better under a common language. Although English-only movement has close connections to restrictionist, anti-immigration organizations, which suggests that the English-only movement has a wider, more far-reaching, and more negative agenda than simply advocating an official English language policy, English should be the official language of United States for two main reasons: first, In 1990 US census reported that 97.1 % of the US population speak English; second and most importantly, making English the official language of the United States refers solely to the language of the government, not of the people, private business, classrooms, or more. In addition, declare English the official language of the United States would make easier business and negotiations, more people will be able to participate in democracy system, the population will have a better understanding of laws, and the diversity of languages spoken in the US will not be affect, indeed, it would have an
The United States is made up of many different ethic groups. These groups vary from Latinos, Asian American, African American, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, and etc. These ethnic groups come into America speaking many different languages. However, many people are still surprised to learn that the United States has no official language. Many assume that English is the official language of the United States. But despite efforts over the years, the United States has no official language. Because the United States has no official language, it is suffering with large costs. These large costs will lead us on a road to wasteful government expenses, language battles that fuel ethnic resentment, and in the long run serious ethnic and linguistic separatist movements. An official English legislation is the answer to the problem.
Not to mention, speaking English is a part of American heritage. Society should adapt to American culture and values, which means all American citizens should speak the nation’s primary language: English. If people refuse to speak and/or learn English, those individuals are rejecting American culture. America has always been extremely accepting and welcoming to all people of different backgrounds, so people should accept and adopt America’s primary language as well(Ciamarra). By establishing a common language among all people, the nation will thrive and
The United States is a melting pot: we have built our country on the customs of many others. We cannot be afraid to revert to old tactics so long as they are successful. Other countries hold the key to success in the education system and the United States must be willing to take note.
The shape of north America and the United States between 1492 and 1877 could have only been formed through the themes of empire, slavery, capitalism, and democracy. In this paper, I will demonstrate that empire was the most important out of these themes. Empire is the most important theme because with empire there wouldn’t have been a need or any means of having the other themes and empire literally shaped the United States. Empire was the base of numerous events including the total European invasion of the early Native American civilizations, England colonizing the Americas, the American revolution, early 19th century western expansion. Empire is also important because it isn’t just a thing of the past it still impacts the United States
English becoming the official Language of the United States is not just a controversial topic, it is necessary to keep America alive. American history and tradition is falling, and the ground on which she was founded is slowly fading. Americans must wake up to the importance of preserving the history of their culture. America is considered to be the greatest country in the world by even some who are not Americans. The “American Dream” is something people fantasize over all around the world. In order to keep the desire to be American, one must truly understand what it takes to be American. English is essential in living the American life. English should be the official language of the United States to give the people what they want, to recognize the historic role, and to limit controversy.
According to Teodorescu (2010), English for Specific Purposes (ESP) came into existence soon after the Second World War as there was a huge expansion of science, technology, and business all over the world and it became essential to have an international language for specialists. Later on, ESP became so popular that it is an important branch of English Language Teaching (ELT). Therefore, ESP which has the subcomponent like English for Science and Technology (EST) and it is further minimized to English for Engineering. Adriana Teodorescu (2010).
Standardization of the English Language There are several important events before 1500 that, when listed together, show a series of steps in the struggle for English language supremacy. These steps are mainly governmental, legal and official events that pushed English usage. In 1356 The Sheriff's Court in London and Middlesex were conducted in English for the first time. When Parliament opened in 1362 the Statute of Pleading was issued declaring English as a language of the courts as well as of Parliament, but it was not until 1413 that English became the official language of the courts everywhere. Thirteen years later in 1423, Parliament records start being written in English.
The two languages are very similar, so much that it is very easy to understand between the two countries. The languages do not need translation due to writing in what is called standard English. Standard English is the written English format used in all three countries making it very versatile and easy to understand. There only a handful of similarities between American English and British English. There is more of a difference than there are similarities.
