Criterion D: Argumentative Essay
My topic is on the US converting or adopting the use of (SI). We are investigating this topic because other countries use it, while the US is still using the English system and people are wondering should the US just do the same as the other countries. NASA lost a $125 million Mars Climate Orbiter because the failure to convert from English to metric units, and the teams were using two different sets of units. This caused a controversy over whether the United States should be required to switch to the metric system, more than half of the world uses the metric system. The United States should adopt the use if the International System of Measurement, because

Some people may say that the metric system is one of the greatest tools that were ever invented. “The spread of the metric system is a triumph not of science but international capitalism,” (Marclano, 2015). If the US were to convert to the metric system we would just be making world more similar than it already is, and we need to cherish and save our differences. The measurement that the US is using now is more important and essential to the people than the metric system. “It allows us to recognize that distance, weight, and volume can be measured and conceived of in more than one way,” (Marclano, 2015). The United States has been using the metric system already and is increasing its use of the metric system. The metric system that we use now is based on the metric units in some areas, and is becoming more and more like the SI every day. Some people say that it is good to transfer because it is important to foreign trade and the influence of technology. “…The increasing competitiveness of other nations and the demands of global marketplaces…,” (Gentry, 2002). If the United States does not make the change than it handicap the Nation’s industry and economy. A lot of people in the United States are highly skilled in math and science, so by transitioning to the metric system it will makes these subjects more effective. These advantages and disadvantages of using the metric system play a big role when it comes to thinking about initially making the
The United States is the only country who does not use the metric system (meters, kilometers, litters); instead they use the customary system (inches, feet). For example, if you will have to drive in another country you will not understand how far another grocery store because the sign tells you in meters not in miles.
54% of Puerto Ricans have voted for a change (to be independent or become a state).... ... middle of paper ... ... My topic was about how Puerto Ricans don’t know what they want to do with the island.
In conclusion, the U.S. should switch their system of measurement to metric because many people would think it easier for themselves and their society. America should change to the metric system because it will promote more jobs in America, it would increase relations with other countries, and it is easier to understand and apply. There are many reasons that America should switch to the metric system and in the future Americans will probably say the word meter without knowing that before, they would have said the word foot.
In response to the Great Depression, the New Deal was a series of efforts put forth by Franklin D. Roosevelt during his first term as United States’ President. The Great Depression was a cataclysmic economic event starting in the late 1920s that had an international effect. Starting in 1929 the economy started to contract, but it wasn’t until Wall Street started to crash that the pace quickened and its effects were being felt worldwide. What followed was nearly a decade of high unemployment, extreme poverty, and an uncertainty that the economy would ever recover.
There exists a lot of controversy over the term “American Exceptionalism.” Not only was this debate prevalent many years ago, it also exists today. There are many aspects of American culture that can make it seem like the most superior country in the world, but also there exists many that make it seem otherwise. The term American Exceptionalism is a term that is used to strengthen a country. In times of peril and chaos, the most important action a country can do is to come together as one. Exceptionalism is not only a term for leaders to live by, but also is a term that equates to a sense of pride for the entire country.
The Turn of the Screw by Henry James has been the cause of many debates about whether or not the ghosts are real, or if this is a case of a woman with psychological disturbances causing her to fabricate the ghosts. The story is told in the first person narrative by the governess and is told only through her thoughts and perceptions, which makes it difficult to be certain that anything she says or sees is reliable. It starts out to be a simple ghost story, but as the story unfolds it becomes obvious that the governess has jumps to conclusions and makes wild assumptions without proof and that the supposed ghosts are products of her mental instability which was brought on by her love of her employer
Not everyone agrees that the penny should be totally eliminated. No matter what your stance the penny debate is real and the United States has to make a decision one way or another. My stance is no, we don’t need the penny anymore. You can’t buy anything with it like you can with a courter. Pennies aren’t needed the price might be 0.99 cents but we have tax so it’s rounded up.I know some people collect them because they have been around forever but, they are not needed. I feel there shouldn’t because we lose money making it, it would be easier to round up or down and it takes a lot of time to count.
Manifest Destiny Ever since America has gained independence from Britain, America has been able to expand and claim territories mainly in the West. In the 1840s, it has become evident that many people supported the concept of Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny combines a belief in expansionism along with other common ideas of the era including “American exceptionalism and Romantic nationalism” (New World Encylopedia, 1). It has commonly held a belief in White supremacy; others might see it in a broader expression as a belief in Americans’ mission in the world.
Justify your research question and explain why this topic has been chosen. Why is it significant and worthy of a discussion?
An argumentative essay persuades the audience or a reader to state an issue that gives some several valid and true reasons, where it can be supported by the evidence and make the audience to adopt a new belief or behavior. The argumentative essay can be also written in a MLA (Modern Language Association) or APA (American Psychological Association) format. It depends on what format you prefer. A good argumentative essay starts with a good topic where it can claim what the argumentative essay is about. It is important that topic need to have something that interests you as a writer and reader as an audience. Before writing an argumentative essay, you need to know that what kind of audience are you writing for. For example, if you are writing for a younger audience, you need to be careful about the language and sentences structure, which should be simple and short to understand. Likely, if you are writing for a highly educated audience, you need to provide
Towards the end of the 18th century the French government set out to amend and alleviate this problem and replace the chaotic collection of units then in use. The goal of this effort was to produce a universal system of measurement that did not rely on a collection of distinct standards, and to use the decimal system rather than fractions. In 1790, the French general assembly gathered with the academy of science to devise such a system; the system devised is known as the metric system By 1960, the metric system was officially named Système International d'Unités (SI) and currently is used in almost every country in the world except the United States of America.
In Federalist #10, Madison argues that factions are dangerous for a well-formed government. He claims that factions are an inevitable part of human nature, that needs to be monitored by the government in order to control the damage that they cause. Publius states that as long as men have different amounts of wealth, property, and have different opinions, there will continue to be factions. Madison claims that there are only two ways to control a faction, to remove its causes or to control its effects. To remove the causes of a faction, you either destroy liberty or force every citizen to share the same opinions and beliefs. Therefore, the only logical way to control factions are to control their causes so that the majority factions don’t impose
“If my future were determined just by my performance on a standardized test, I wouldn't be here. I guarantee you that.” This quote by Michelle Obama illustrates the idea that standardized testing should not have such a large influence on education in America. However, a majority of people are under the impression that standardized tests are an accurate method to measure a person's intellectual ability. I believe that standardized tests have developed into a very critical part of the American education system; that is hindering the growth of students and teachers instead of providing a tool that can accurately measure knowledge.
By nature, most students are brought up in an academic environment motivated to get A’s and B’s on their report cards. Those grades sometimes don’t thoroughly report how much a student has learned or gained knowledge in each topic. Some instructors throw in factors totally unrelated to learning, when the main objective of academic institutions is to learn. In order to clearly demonstrate how much a student has learned in the classroom, schools should change their current grading system and teach students how to learn.
People often times single me out for being a christian. They just love asking me about touchy subjects to see my response. And this is because, unfortunately, there are so many christians who have this idea that the whole world needs to see things the same way they do. You see so much hate coming out of a religion that claims to preach peace and love. Christians see it as protecting the bible but it just comes across as ignorant. I am not saying I don’t share in the opinions of many christians, but more than anything I am saying that christians need to learn that not everyone in the world is going to see it the same way they will. When it comes to sin, same sex marriage, and living a holy life there are more than one opinion on what is right. So, you can’t justify all of the hate-acts in the name of your religion. Instead use all that energy you waste on hate to love and help those around you, despite whether you think they are “right or wrong”. I believe that that’s what God is more concerned about.
