How do you act at school? Is it different from how you are at home? From time to time people act differently around different people and the environment, similar to George Orwell in “Shooting an Elephant.” Orwell acted different around the Burmese and the British. He didn’t like the British way of taking control over, but he wasn’t going to step down and give up his position and have no money or respect. He didn’t like the way the Burmese treated him because of who he worked for. The Burmese and the British all crowded around Orwell, when it was time to decide to shoot the elephant or not. multiple personalities. They have their ups and downs, and at times don’t get along. At school, I don’t talk much, quiet, don’t do anything fun, and don’t let what people say affect me. The benefits of these are qualities that I can learn more, don’t get in trouble, and avoid drama easily. At school, I get almost to all of my work done, when I’m really focused. However, the only thing about these qualities are that people don’t really know me, I’m too quiet, boring at school, and people think they can walk all over me. Everybody always says, “You’re too quiet. Do you ever talk?” The positives are far better than the negatives. I act like this, because that’s the way my dad raised me to be. I was quiet at school and at home, but as I got older, I start being more outgoing home. However at home, I talk way too much, outgoing, always doing something, and tell people what I really want to say. The fact that I can make friends easily, people try to talk to me and get to know me, have more fun, and people don’t run over me, is the best part of my home-self. Most of the time, my dad thinks something is wrong with me. The negatives to these qualities are people think I get annoying at times, occasionally my family thinks I am crazy, and I have to watch what I say. I am like this, because it’s an outlet for my quietness at school.

Many great authors that study human nature stood out the most during the period of time between the Imperialism and World War II. Among these authors were George Orwell and Virginia Woolf. Their study of the human nature is especially visible in certain short stories that each author respectively did. Orwell’s “Shooting an Elephant” and Woolf’s “The Death of the Moth.” In either of these stories the respective author uses animals to depict their complex ideas about the nature of life, men, and the whole world.

Both essays happen in unfamiliar places where there were racism and discrimination. They do not fit in with the natives and is judged because of their nationalities. One of these is normative social influences, this is “the influence others have on us because we want them to like us (King, 2013, p. 447). Andrew shows this when he talks about how he got in detention. Andrew states he bullied a kid, so the kid would think he was cool. You see that Andrew does this disgusting action to this kid so he could be seen as cool. Another social behavior that is seen in the film is the fundamental attribution error, which is observers overestimate the importance of the internal traits and underestimate the importance of external factors when explaining others behaviors. We see the fundamental attribution error a lot in this movie. First we see it with Brian, everyone sees him as smart. But when Brian explains that he failed shop class people were surprised; they never thought this kid would ever fail, since he is so smart. Another is with Bender, they see him as disrespectful and aggressive. What they do not know is, at home, he is being verbally and physically abused by his dad and has to defend himself. This can bring us to conformity, which is a change in a person’s behavior to get more closely with group standards. We see this with all five of the students. There is no doubt that conformity is essential to the harmony of society. It allows individuals to work together under a uniform set of rules and norms. In childhood and adolescence, the time during which students go to school, children begin to learn these basic rules of civilization. They socialize with others, learn to respect and become well-rounded individuals. This requires students to not only develop their talents, but also their weaknesses.

Since the beginning of news reporting, it’s been known that what actually gets into the news reports is monitored and carefully picked by higher authorities. What isn’t widely known, however, is that the media can use specific wording and phrases that, on the surface, look like normal news coverage, but are actually a technique of the media to control the images people see and the words they hear and read. The quest for power is one which has been etched into the minds of men throughout history. However, it can be said that true power is not a result of one’s actions but comes from the following one’s own beliefs without being influenced by others. This principle sets up the story for Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell. The protagonist, Orwell himself, is a sub divisional police officer in Burma, a British colony. Orwell must try to find and use his inner power when he is faced with the decision of whether or not to kill an elephant which has ravaged the Burman’s homes. The state of power established through the imperialistic backdrop show that Orwell, as a colonist, should be in control. As well, the perspective and ideas given by Orwell show his true character and lessen the overall power set up for him. Lastly, the symbols shown are representations of traditional forms of power, but take on different implications in the story. In Shooting an Elephant, George Orwell uses setting, characterization and symbols to show that true power comes from following the dictates of one’s conscience.

The author's purpose is to explain the audience (who is both English and Burmese) about the kind of life he is living in Burma, about the conditions, circumstances he is facing and to tell the British Empire what he think about their imperialism and his growing displeasure for the imperial domination of British Empire.
