Compare and Contrast the Core Competencies of
Family Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Administrator

The concept of population-focused emerged as areas of specialty in Nurse Practitioner (NP) as the result of the demographic of population has changed and become more complicated. According to the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), (2013) there are six main areas of population-focused NP, including Family/Across the life span, Neonatal, Pediatric Acute Care, Pediatric Primary Care, Psychiatric-Mental Health, and Women’s Health/Gender Related. NP must receive graduate education with a master’s degree as a minimum level. NP educational curriculums were guided by NP core competencies and population-focused competencies, and an individual NP is expect to meet both competencies (NONPF, 2013).

Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) are education and clinical prepared to care for patients across the lifespan (NONPF, 2013). Core competency areas for FNP include the following: scientific foundation competencies, leadership competencies, quality competencies, practice inquiry competencies, technology and information literacy competencies, policy competencies, health delivery system competencies, ethics competencies, and independent practice competencies (NONPF, 2013). …show more content…

FNPs function independently as well as work collaboratively with other health care discipline. Whereas NAs work in the settings where a nursing division is operated of as a part of the organization. Although NAs do not provide direct care, they are highly significant members of nursing and health care system as well as FNPs are. The competencies from both groups of nurses are similar in some ways, but there are some differences between them as well. Some similarities of core competencies between FNP and NA includes communication, clinical knowledge, ethics competency, and leadership
