Dallas Cowboys vs. Green Bay Packers

Any NFL fan wants at least two things for their team; for them to make it to playoffs and for them to win the super bowl. As a Dallas Cowboys fan, I was more than thrilled that the not-so-great-team from last year, actually made it to the quarterfinals this year. The quarterfinals game vs. the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field was not going to be just a normal game, or an easy defeat. Meetings with the Packers do not happen often, this would be the fifth time in the past decade the teams would battle it out. What a terrific treat, a belated holiday gift to football fans. Those uniforms. Those histories. These storylines. Yes this is what we have been waiting for. I knew the Cowboys would have to keep

up their defense and offense to overcome their rivals. Apparently that is easier said, than done.
It was a typical Sunday afternoon in the month of January.

I sat in the cold and well lit house, with a large 55” television in front of me, only imagining I was at the game in real life. The teams entered the stadium looking exactly the way they are supposed to look, the way they will always look in our mind’s eye: White jersey’s, silver pants, and that wonderful helmet with the star on the side on one half of the field; Green jerseys, yellow pants, yellow helmet with the big “G” on the side on the other. Noise, chants, cheers, laughs, and conversation filled the stadium. The fans were decked out in blue, white and silver, and green and yellow colors; some were even shirtless with paint covering the upper half of their bodies, with lettering spelling “DALLAS” or “PACKERS.” Before I knew it, it was half time and the score was 14 to 10, the Cowboys were

leading.
The Cowboys had not defeated the Packers since 2008, where they trailed the Packers 27-16. By the time the fourth quarter arrived, the game was extremely close in score; any outcome was capable at this point. The palms of my hands began sweating as I clinched the remote and the edge of the couch. Slowly, play by play, the best thing happened. The Cowboys and the Packers were giving each other a run for their money.
Imagine this, there’s six minutes and twenty six seconds left on the clock. The score is 21 to 26, Packers are in the lead. The Cowboys have possession of the ball. It is second down and 8 yards to go at the Packers’ 38 yard line. Tony Romo comes out in the shotgun position and was sacked by M. Neal and D. Jones at the 41 yard line, losing three yards. Five minutes and thirty four seconds remaining; 3rd down, 11 yards to go. In shotgun position, again, T. Romo made a short pass up the middle to C. Beasley to the Packers’ 32 yard line, gaining 9 yards.
By this time I had given up hope that the team would actually pull through and get a first down. Not even a full touch down away in score, the Cowboys need to make a huge move to even have a chance of still winning the game.
Four minutes and forty two seconds in, fourth down, 2 yards to go, shotgun position T. Romo made a deep left pass to D. Bryant; Complete pass at the Packers’ 1 yard line; a 31 yard pass. Instantly excitement over came me and clearly the fans at the game. What felt like the whole stadium quickly became loud and rambunctious. The sweat that once covered the palms of my hand was dry and I knew the Cowboys finally had the upper hand on the game. Then, the worst of the worst happened. The official ref of the game, in his black and white striped uniform, blew his whistle and motioned that the Packers were challenging the ruling on the field.
Once the replays of the play began, I could instantly tell there was a fifty/fifty chance the ruling could be reversed.

It was once a game in our hands and now rested in the hands of a striped uniform. While the play was being reviewed, there was a commercial break. The sweat, that used to be clamming up my palms quickly spread to my forehead and the rest of my body; and the cold house suddenly felt like a hot summer’s day. Though it was only seconds, it felt like years. After an incredible catch, and certainly at the best time, I could not grasp the fact that there was a possibility the play would be reversed. The game returned from the commercial and the Ref called out the final ruling. The words that left his mouth were like nails on a chalk board to my ears, the remote fell to floor, as I was in total

shock.
“After a challenge of the ruling on the field by the Green Bay Packers, the ruling has been reversed; Incomplete pass, Green Bay has possession of the ball.”
As most fans of the football game, I wanted to turn the channel, maybe throw the remote, that was already on the floor, scream, and yell at the television; but I did not want to miss what may happen next. The Packers had possession of the ball for the remainder of the game. The score ended 21 to 26, Packers win.
I was more than devastated that my team, that did not come anywhere near the super bowl last season, was once again not going to be competing for a super bowl ring. However, I was more than impressed with their skills, acquisitions, professionalism, and determination to win the game. This year may not have been the year for them, but there will always be another season; and I’m certain there will always be another chance, another game, more history waiting to be made, another addition to the already long story line of the Dallas Cowboys Vs the Green Bay Packers.
