Should community service hours be a graduation requirement? High school is very stressful, especially the last 2 years. Students start planning college, looking for jobs, and join extracurricular activities. Most students stress out on passing their classes and graduations requirements. In most american high schools, community service hours are a graduation requirement and the most frequently asked question about this topic is, should community service hours be a graduation requirement? There are 3 important reasons in which community service hours should be requirement, responsibility, gain of experience, and most importantly, students get the opportunity to explore career paths. Although many parents and students believe community service hours are a waste of time, this opportunity allows them to gain responsibility. “Causes across the community have benefited students and have taken on a new sense of responsibility.” (Claire Koenig, pg.109) Students that enjoy serving the community gain more responsibility by staying committed to their compromise to their community. “ When performing community service, students learn to form a cooperative team in order to accomplish their goal.” (Claire Koenig, pg. 109) Teamwork is essential in a job. Any job that students apply to, teamwork will always be necessary and if you are a shy person, community service will help you gain the skills you are missing. It will increase your communication skills, and gain leadership experience. “By fulfilling this requirement, students also gain the opportunity to volunteer in fields that interest them, allowing them to experiment with possible career paths.” (Claire Koenig, pg.109) The experience they will be gaining will benefit them in the future when the time of choosing a career finally
