Communication is a nursing foundation and is part of our interpersonal relationships with clients and is essential in our daily lives. We experience one on one communications daily with our patients and their family members. We are also part of groups meeting with several health care teams and other nurses with whom we are working with. The need for good communication though, is to both giving and receiving the information; and stressors can interfere with proper, accurate and meaningful communication. If we are unable to communication, then there can be no good relationship, therefore some important information can missed, inaccurate or not heard.

It can cause stressors of aggravation or low energy levels, these issue will need to be addressed so a good meaningful communication relationship can be established.
• Having multiple chronic illnesses such as depression and diabetes can increase a client’s stress. These related stressors, can be harder to deal with when it comes clients. Unfortunately this is not something that can just be fixed by giving a pain pill or getting someone some much needed sleep. This may have to be more of a collaborative type of care and may involve several individuals to help resolve and treat these types clients with the many stressors they may be under.
“Although stress is a universal occurrence, it is a highly subjective experience. People have different tolerance levels for stress. Some are extremely sensitive to any stressor. Others are laid back and less disturbed by unexpected stressful circumstances.” (Arnold, 2016, Chapter 16, p. 311). As nurses we need to know how to communicate with clients that are under stress, as well as handling our own stressors. As far as a client that has multiple chronic illnesses, we as members of the healthcare team and client advocate, we can use our judgment and make a referral for additional services ranging from psychiatric help to a nutritionist.
