An Introduction of the Topic The Common Core State Standards are simply learning goals that are outlined for the students. This outline is a way to show the students what they should be able to do at the end of each grade. These learning goals are supposed to “provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them” (Top Ten Things to Know, 2015). These certain standards are also supposed to be designed to be “robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in the near future” (Top Ten Things to Know, 2015). The new standards are requiring students to spend more time outside of school to focus on their school work as well as homework, and it is taking an increasing amount of time away from students when they could be doing other things, for instance, living their out of school life with sports, extracurricular activities, family time, etc. School is causing stress on many students, and some get to the point where they experience an emotional, physical, or mental breakdown due to the increased amount of stress. Teachers are not the only ones to have burnouts: students do, too. While Common Core standards are hitting many students hard, the parents are also feeling the stress. It is said that “in order for students to be successful with the Common Core Standards, the level of parental involvement will need to increase” (Impact of the Common Core Standards, 2015). Parents ultimately have a huge impact on their children’s view of school, and there is no other time where the parent’s encouragement and help could be more powerful than now, the era of Common Core Standards. Parents are having to stay on top of their game by communicating effectively with their child’s teachers, making sure their child completes their homework, providing their children with extra work when needed, and more. It is so important for parents to keep stressing to their children just how important their education
The Common Cores are set of guidelines that each teacher must meet during each school year. These guidelines are met during exams and other types of testing. In Stop The Madness: On “No Child Left Behind” by Diane Ravitch she begins her argument against the NCLB-No Child Left Behind- saying that it worthless for it forces the school to focus only making test requirements instead of students actually getting the main reason why students that go to school, it is to receive knowledge. “One of the unintended consequences of NCLB was the shrinkage of time available to teach anything other than reading and math...Test scores became an obsession” ( Paragraph 7 Ravitch). The “test scores” are wrecking and straying away from true purpose of the schools around the country. The obsession made many educators focus on more test taking skills then the actual knowledge of the subject in order to reach the stranders that the administration have given them . Despite the test scores, the United States are not high rank in math according to the U.S Math Performance in Global Perspective by the Harvard University and Stanford University. In the US itself, the percentage of students that are taking advanced classes are 11.4% in Massachusetts. This is the highest percentage in the US that students are taking high scores. Forty-two states have adopted Common Core State Standards. These standards were created to focus only on English and Mathematics. In effect of states adopting Common Core Standards, all other subjects taught in school seemed less important. History and Science standards are no longer stressed. Students are limited to being proficient in only two subjects. The Common Core deprives students’ ability to be skilled in multiple areas. Budget cuts have created a tremendous amount of difficulty in providing education systems with the financial support needed to help students succeed. Less funding means smaller staffs, fewer resources, and a lower number of services for students. Often, exceptionally skilled teachers won’t accept positions in school districts that do not pay well. One of the copious negatives caused by a lack of funding is the insufficient supply of student resources. Public schools that receive significantly less funding cannot provide students with resources such as up to date textbooks, technology, and other up-to-date learning materials. This lack of funding can also affect the students on an emotional level. Many students aren 't motivated to learn, regardless of their situation. So when presented with bad teachers and poor resources even the gifted students begin to distinguish education as a chore and not a means to a successful future. It is as Bill Gates was once quoted saying,”I went to public school through sixth grade, and being good at tests wasn 't cool.” Imagine if Bill Gates had given up, perhaps the world would have never have profited from the technology he developed and the philanthropic contributions he has made. When teachers teach students, rather than tests, they are essentially investing their effort in the future of the United States, so why can’t we apply as many resources as possible to the people and systems that play a huge role in ensuring a bright future for our
The pressure is getting to the children and because they are being put into all these academic programs by their parents, they are tending to take less time on their assignments resulting in a bad grade because of all the assignments they have to finish. “When parents pushed their kids to achieve, they did rise to meet the expectations. But when parents tried to nudge kids past their realistic potential, the effort backfired, and the students actually did worse” (Holloway). This means that when one is being pushed and put into more academic programs, they are focusing on more than one thing at a time, meaning that they have to multitask and that may not be really efficient when dealing with school and doing completely different subjects at the same time. This matters because when parents are pushing their kids academically, it may backfire by having the kids do worse in their common core subjects because they are being pushed higher than their limits.

Students of the 21st century face expectations far greater than their predecessors. With ever increasing requirements in the job market and college admissions, students are expected to succeed not only academically, but be heavily involved as well. Students hold positions in academic clubs, participate on sports teams, and have jobs, all while maintaining the highest academic standards.
