The National Education Association (NEA) was established in 1857. The NEA was made "to elevate the character and advance the interests of the profession of teaching and to promote the cause of popular education in the United States" (“Our Long”). As of now the NEA is focusing on issues such as, “human and civil rights, college affordability, and education funding.” (“Issues”) One of the group’s main goal/mission is to “advocate for education professionals and to unite our members and the nation to fulfill the promise of public education to prepare every student to succeed in a diverse and interdependent world.” (“NEA’s”) When becoming a member of the NEA there are five different types of memberships. In Hamilton they had been trying to decrease the amount of suspensions. There had been many goals and plans but none of them had been successful. They even had to staff had to go to two days of training to try and get better communication skills and to try to understand the students. Matt Tudor is the district director of student services. He one day read an article from the NEA and got an idea for a project for Hamilton. The results from following NEA were awesome. Before the Hamilton project one school had 29 suspensions then the next year when the Hamilton project it went down to 13 suspension. This article made the NEA look good. It showed how positive the group can be and that it has an influence on people who are trying to make education better. In the article, “New program helps decrease suspension rate in Hamilton schools”, it says that Matt Tudor got “the idea for a Hamilton program started after he read an article in National Education Association (NEA) Today magazine detailing the "school-to-prison pipeline," which cited research stating that suspension, not poverty, is the number-one predictor of a child dropping out of school and being subject to unemployment, reliance on social welfare programs, and incarceration” (Machi). This shows how much of an impact the NEA has on people. I am sure that Matt would have found another solution. It may not have been as quick as it was to find this solution from the NEA but he would have found one. This makes the NEA look very good. Another way it makes the NEA look good is that it actually worked. According to the article, “Crawford Woods had 29 suspensions in the fall semester of the 2013-2014 school year, and reported 13 last semester. Garfield and the Freshman School had 35 and 71 suspensions in the 2013-2014 semester, respectively, and reported 30 and 34 suspensions respectively last semester” (Machi). This shows that that the plan worked well. This gives the NEA a lot of credit and makes people want to join. This was a very persuasive
In Campus Racism 101 Nikki Giovanni states that, “this world cannot allow white students to go through college without interacting with Blacks in authoritative figures.” (Writing on the River 12) The Atlantic Online states that in 1994, the same year Nikki Giovanni published Campus Racism 101, only 11 percent of black people make up the College student body. (Andrew Mcgill) All of these things considering, 1994 was the perfect time to write this article. Giovanni’s personal essay does many brilliant things in her article. She effectively ties in actual questions black students will face, gives advice on how to succeed in college, and gives points on how to gain your instructor’s respect. All of these things she states in the article will help any student in College. The only thing it does not do well is the length of the article. As a whole the article feels like it could have touched on a few more points such as going in a little deeper on the positives of a College
He seems to force what he says, rather than having a natural tone, causing the reader of the article to be left with a feeling of discontent. Although he only focuses on the negatives that those of the past have done, his argument is direct. No matter what generation you are from, it seems one always suspects the other of either ignorance or reckless abandon. It is easy for someone of the younger generation to point fingers at those who raised them, while taking no responsibility to take control of their lives. He makes some very valid points pertaining to the zero tolerance policy practiced by schools and how it has a negative effect on children in our school systems and essentially pushes them into our juvenile and prison systems. I am a firm believer that the zero tolerance does nothing good for students in school. In my mind it completely goes against everything our schools supposedly stand for. We tell kids to go to school to learn, but the first time they break a rule we suspend them and send them home or even worse we expel them for the entire year. I just don’t see how that isn’t setting kids up for failure down the road and neglecting them of a quality education. One statistic the author presented that really caught me off guard was when they said that when someone is suspended or expelled even once in their entire time in school their chances of ending up behind bars is increased at a rate of five times than that of someone who doesn’t get suspended or expelled. This made me really reflect on how many friends I had in high school that were suspended and ultimately flunked out. It made me wonder if the system truly wasn’t there for them to help them get an
I was able to take from it the knowledge of how to be critical of statistics that I see and I think that it has complimented what I have learned in some of my Political Science classes, including this one. Even though I am not exactly the audience member Best was trying to reach, he was at least successful in showing me what I have learned by just being a part of the social sciences, that sources of statistics and facts are biased and that it takes effort to be an informed member of this society. National Board Certification is the occupation’s label of proficient teaching established by teachers for teachers. It is assembled with National Board Standards and the five core propositions, difficult and performance-based, based on several measures, peer-reviewed, voluntary, valid and reliable. “To date, more than 112,000 teachers in all 50 states and the District of Columbia have achieved National Board Certification” (“National Board Certification”). It is very beneficial for teachers and I think the National Board Certified teachers make better educators.
By using the topic of public school systems disregarding creativity he can persuade the viewers to want to take action. In the middle of his speech, he points out how every education system in the entire world is based on a ranking of subjects. When Robinson talked about the rankings of classes he had two main topics that he made sure to talk about. One being, the ranking is based on the most useful subjects are at the top of the list. He brought up how children have driven away from certain activities that they enjoyed because were raised to believe that those businesses will not create a successful job in the future. For example, if a child were gifted at playing the guitar and liked it, he or she would be guided away from the activity because there is no promise to have a successful career as a musician. First, with all the money that is being put into public education, it needs to be distributed evenly. If public schools had similar resources and capabilities, students wouldn’t need to travel far to get a good education and this would solve many problems. An example of this from the film is when a Mother is speaking about her child’s experience at an open discussion. She talks about how her student loves music and music is taught at a one public school and not the other. Money is being distributed unequally and kids are being taken of opportunities that they could have a passion for. Another aspect that I agree with is that for things to change for the better in the future, everyone needs to get involved. Kids in these unfortunate situations can only do so much to speak up for themselves but it will only get them so far. Most of the students aren’t even able to vote yet so it is important the country as a whole is aware of these problems and learn about how to help. As we went through each chapter of our book it would remind me of situations I already observed or would see that week. The more I learned about the educational theories I was able to see certain situations in a new light and it highlighted the differences I saw in the ages groups and different classes. The use of different motivation methods that were utilized by the teachers was great; most of them I didn’t realize were motivators until later and the one motivator I thought I understood was a reinforcer. I did see how the teacher’s preconceived ideas about students because of the type of community they are affected the students most of the time not positively. Some students were quickly disciplined and others were allowed to get away with similar offences with no comment all because of the relationship the teachers had with the families involved or the town gossip about them. I could see that this was negatively reinforcing the bad behaviors in both students. This made me aware of checking my own preconceived ideas and trying to judge the children based on what I have learned about how students learn. Overall I do believe the goals of the STEM camp were met and this has taught me to use multiple approaches to keep students engaged and

I also benefited by this research because when I’m out of school I want to move to South Carolina. I have learned much from this paper, and I know it will help me later on in my life.
The National Education Association in the beginning supported the No Child Left Behind Act but knew that it needed some revisions before it would be the effective in the school system. The NEA felt that the Act met the requirements of ensuring equality among the school population but they disagreed with the Act’s accountability and testing requirements. Democrats and Republicans both showed great support when the Act was initially proposed by President Bush, but as time went on they to began to question the outcomes. Democrats and Republicans began to debate on the provisions in the Act of state accountability. “The National Conference of State Legislatures called the bill’s testing provisions “seriously and perhaps irreparably flawed.” (Rudalevige, 2003). This was due to the law not having any set way to account for the testing that was supposed to be part of the Act; it left that process up to the individual states.

As students in a Structure & Philosophy class, one of the main components has been to introduce and familiarize us with the No Child Left Behind Act. President Bush passed this legislation on January 8, 2002. The NCLB Act was designed to ensure each and every student the right to a fair education, to give parents more options in their child’s education, and to guarantee all teachers are highly qualified. By highly qualified, the act means teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, have full state certification or licensure, and have demonstrated competence in their subject areas (US Dept. of Education).
In the United States, education plays a vital role for the government. It was a major interest of our Founding Fathers in writing the Constitution because our democracy relies on an educated society. John Adams once stated, “Education for every class and rank of people down to the lowest and poorest.” Our Founding Fathers did not want education only for the upper class, but also for the lower class as well. Education is essential for the development and prosperity of our country. It has enhanced American financial and administrative leadership. In acknowledging the importance of education, the federal government took upon a grander role of financing public schools with the passage of Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) in 1965, which along the years was subjected to various reauthorizations. In 2001, the reauthorizations included No Child Left behind Act (NCLB), which required the states to set the standards for student performance as well as teacher quality. This act helps the educational advancement in schools because it improves the comprehensiveness and fairness of the American education.

The National Education Association (NEA) is an organization that advocates for education professionals. In addition to giving education professional the opportunity to network, the organization advocates for quality public education. The organization values “opportunity, democracy, professionalism, partnership and collective action”. The organization seeks social justice for all people, and believes without it the world is in social oppression. The NEA definition of social justice refers to equity and justice. It involves a society that has equal distribution of resources and advantages, and all people feel safe and secure physically and mentally.
