The National Education Association (NEA) was established in 1857. The NEA was made "to elevate the character and advance the interests of the profession of teaching and to promote the cause of popular education in the United States" (“Our Long”). As of now the NEA is focusing on issues such as, “human and civil rights, college affordability, and education funding.” (“Issues”) One of the group’s main goal/mission is to “advocate for education professionals and to unite our members and the nation to fulfill the promise of public education to prepare every student to succeed in a diverse and interdependent world.” (“NEA’s”) When becoming a member of the NEA there are five different types of memberships. In Hamilton they had been trying to decrease the amount of suspensions. There had been many goals and plans but none of them had been successful. They even had to staff had to go to two days of training to try and get better communication skills and to try to understand the students. Matt Tudor is the district director of student services. He one day read an article from the NEA and got an idea for a project for Hamilton. The results from following NEA were awesome. Before the Hamilton project one school had 29 suspensions then the next year when the Hamilton project it went down to 13 suspension. This article made the NEA look good. It showed how positive the group can be and that it has an influence on people who are trying to make education better. In the article, “New program helps decrease suspension rate in Hamilton schools”, it says that Matt Tudor got “the idea for a Hamilton program started after he read an article in National Education Association (NEA) Today magazine detailing the "school-to-prison pipeline," which cited research stating that suspension, not poverty, is the number-one predictor of a child dropping out of school and being subject to unemployment, reliance on social welfare programs, and incarceration” (Machi). This shows how much of an impact the NEA has on people. I am sure that Matt would have found another solution. It may not have been as quick as it was to find this solution from the NEA but he would have found one. This makes the NEA look very good. Another way it makes the NEA look good is that it actually worked. According to the article, “Crawford Woods had 29 suspensions in the fall semester of the 2013-2014 school year, and reported 13 last semester. Garfield and the Freshman School had 35 and 71 suspensions in the 2013-2014 semester, respectively, and reported 30 and 34 suspensions respectively last semester” (Machi). This shows that that the plan worked well. This gives the NEA a lot of credit and makes people want to join. This was a very persuasive
