College Admissions Essays - The Rocky Path Stricken with rickets, attention deficit disorder, a severed facial nerve, and being voted "most likely to end up in the electric chair" by his fifth grade class, this individual triumphed over many obstacles. As an aspiring writer and actor he was rejected as an extra in the film The Godfather and was persuaded to switch careers for more realistic goals. Sparks of genius were recognized in his script writing, but he was told only legitimate actors would have a chance at performing the title roles. This man's intelligence and insight were constantly discounted. Even with these early setbacks, he received a scholarship to study acting at the American College in Switzerland. In less than three days, he wrote a screenplay that would eventually win an academy award for best picture. The lead character became a metaphor for struggle and the will to achieve, not because of his success, but because of his failure. Reflecting on the success of his labor, he deemed his films "exuberant morality plays" and likened them to the Koran and Buddhist teachings. After gaining recognition for his early film success, this man actually used his facial deformity as a platform of brand recognition.
On July 25, 1946, two young black couples- Roger and Dorothy Malcom, George and Mae Murray Dorsey-were killed by a lynch mob at the Moore's Ford Bridge over the Appalachee River connecting Walton and Oconee Counties (Brooks, 1). The four victims were tied up and shot hundreds of times in broad daylight by a mob of unmasked men; murder weapons included rifles, shotguns, pistols, and a machine gun. "Shooting a black person was like shooting a deer," George Dorsey's nephew, George Washington Dorsey said (Suggs C1). It has been over fifty years and this case is still unsolved by police investigators. It is known that there were atleast a dozen men involved in these killings. Included in the four that were known by name was Loy Harrison. Loy Harrison may not have been an obvious suspect to the investigators, but Harrison was the sole perpetrator in the unsolved Moore's Ford Lynching case. The motive appeared to be hatred and the crime hurt the image of the state leaving the town in an outrage due to the injustice that left the victims in unmarked graves (Jordon,31).

The government reserves were set up to take aboriginals out of their known habitat and culture, while in turn, encouraging them to adapt the European way of life. The Aboriginal Protection Act of 1909 established strict controls for aborigines living on the reserves . In exchange for food, shelter and a little education, aborigines were subjected to the discipline of police and reserve managers. They had to follow the rules of the reserve and tolerate searchers of their homes and themselves. The way he tells a story is unique and constantly fascinating. His style and brand of humor is instantly recognizable, whether you 're watching one of his features, shorts, or advertisements. He still has the opportunity for a long career ahead of him and as he moves into more mainstream Hollywood, it will be important to see how he changes. His films may not have won any Oscars, but they have received acclaim in New Zealand and abroad. His effectiveness as a director and writer is impressive and his talent undeniable. The Civil War was a great and terrible time in America's history. Although there were still many injustices after the war, it provided the framework for equality and human rights for all. The blacks of America still had a long road ahead to achieve full equality, and it still has not been achieved yet, but the gears of progress were set into motion because of the Civil War.
