My long-term career is still undetermined, but I have an idea of what direction I want to go in life. For career goal so far, I want to become a behavior analysis after graduating with my bachelor in psychology. Also, along with becoming a behavior analysis, I want to go into the Peace Corps for two year working with children an anywhere. In some ways, both my career goal and life goal are very similar towards assisting children. In terms of my curricular in school, many of the courses I’ve taken where geared towards the development of children and outside of school, volunteering in programs that focuses on the mental development on children in ways on guidance and tutoring. From my personal experience, the direction I’ve been taking has not be purpose, but my desire to help other and make some type of impact with no acknowledgement makes me happy. Also, other than taking the road towards becoming a behavior analysis, I don’t have any professional history background, so I don’t know if this career choice is the one that will stay. …show more content…
Entering Florida International University, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my psychology degree. The type of classes I toke where pertaining to my interest, such as classes either dealing with research or counseling, I didn’t see any long-term road in. Soon I’ll be working with an internship as a behavior analysis that will offer me a great insight in this career choice before I graduate. In terms of professional standards and competencies, my classes have setup the expectation each career field these classes are more geared toward are looking for. And these expectation gives me a model to follow. And working and learning in a country as America that is completely diverse, the type of classes I take goes in-depth on of the cultural differences around that we all should be aware of whenever going into any career
I have always been interested in working with children. Becoming a teacher has always been a potential career path for me; however, I recently discovered the position of a child life specialist which has further broadened my interest for a future career. Although they are not educators in school, they are extremely important since they are the educators for children and their families to help overcome difficult and/or challenging life events. As a child life specialist I will be teaching children and families in hospitals how to cope with their diagnoses, how a surgery day will go, how certain lifestyles will have to change, and much more.
There are many different career fields you can go into as a social worker: from mental health, drug and alcohol abuse all the way to child welfare. Child welfare is my primary target when I become a social worker. I feel that I will have the biggest impact if I help the kids out that will be creating our future world. If I can help the kids of the next generation then maybe my influence will help more than just those few kids I see every day. Plus ever since I can remember people told me I need to be doing a job that helps children. I want to be able to make a difference in the community, and if I can help the kids, then I know I’ll be helping the community. Being a student at Wilmington College will help me fulfill these values and skills, but the thing that
I see how these aspect fit into my overall goal which is to start a non-profit community agency. I have to use all three skills to be successful. When going over the fields of study that may interest me, I did not agree with the list given. The list shows a form of history as the first 5 options. Counseling was number 6 on the list. I don’t enjoy history so that is why I disagree with that list. The list of leisure was quite entertaining. This list was more accurate than the field of study list. When looking though the summary I wonder if the order the potential careers were listed made a difference in how the career was scored. If I was a career counselor for myself I would suggest resources that talk about nonprofit work and the ground work that goes into building an effective program for the community. I would explore different avenues to accomplish the work my client has set out to do; which is help children and families. I may focus on her work as a school counselor and how she can get the most out of that career. I would discuss training she would like to attend and what areas she would like to be strong in for her work in the community as well as in the school
As an undergraduate, at Western Michigan University, my studies were in psychology. Having previously worked with both children in schools and elders in nursing homes, I wanted to expand my resume when I chose my field work. I was able to complete my hours at Gryphon Place in Kalamazoo. This is a conflict and crisis center where I specialized in crisis intervention and suicide prevention. This experience gave me a feeling of accomplishment and pride in knowing that I was not only helping others but also saving lives. After working at Gryphon Place my career outlook changed drastically. Originally I just wanted to work with kids and I
The stereotypical version of the normal life of a teenager proceeding to college would include high academic standards met throughout their high school career and outstanding outside testing scores resulting in automatic entry into the institution of their choice. Many of these individuals have the support of their accomplished family members in the form of financial support. There are those who have not had the luxuries of any easy upbringing but forced to decide between a life with a college degree or full-time employment. For myself I want to have it all and to achieve that I have taken on both.
Throughout this course I have learned that there are many career paths in psychology. When I applied to Capella University, I had originally chosen the Master’s degree in Psychology with a specialization in Child and Adolescent Development. As I have read various chapters in Career Paths in Psychology (Sternberg, 2007), the
My college career began in 2002, as a history major with the intention of becoming a high school teacher. Along the way I realized I had no passion for that career or how dry the subject can be at a serious academic level. During my time at Georgia State University I took the required Psychology 101 class, and became fascinated with the subject. When I returned to college to finish my bachelor’s degree, in 2014, I changed my major to Psychology and have found it a much more rewarding subject.
Throughout my undergraduate study of psychology, I selected challenging classes that were research oriented, in order to develop the skills needed for future careers in
Well, ever since I was just a youngster, I have always had a love and passion for airplanes. As a result, when I took my first trip on an airplane, I was really excited about it. To tell you a story, I was going to California when I had the opportunity to talk with the Pilots. I was authorized by them to go into the cockpit and not only look around, but they also let me sit in the Captain’s chair. While I couldn’t believe what was happening my fears all turned into fascinations and I realized how my dreams were turning into real things. As can be seen, I was almost sure that airplanes would take a huge role in my life. Few days later, holding a pen I remember writing down on a piece of paper: “Irvin, the best Pilot in the World". I was 7 years old at the time, and I already knew what my main
As an international undergraduate student earning a Bachelor of Science degree in biology at Suffolk University, I had every intention of becoming a Scientist. However, while I completed an internship, a few part time positions and full time administrative/support positions in the field, I realized that I no longer desired to pursue this as a career. Although I valued doing hands-on research, and assisting people in bettering themselves, I found that the field did not call for the formation of more skills, relationships or engaging in mutual mentorship with other scientist to the level that I desired and had experienced through interactions with fellow researchers as a young professional. As a result of this realization, I decided to apply for a lab inventory specialist position in a pharmaceutical company after graduation.
As a psychology major, I decided to add a cross cultural studies minor not only because it would be beneficial for my career, but because I want to be able to understand what individuals believe and how it effects them emotionally and spiritually. This course has specifically help me grasp the concept of exactly what it is that religions believe, and I think that in the future when I am in the field I will be able to relate with people better. Throughout the span of this semester I have learned so many valuable lessons that I want to continue to expand my knowledge in. Although, two specific changes I plan to make in my life as a result of my experiences in this course would be; continuously taking the initiative to know and understand what an individual believes and continuing to further my education on what is going on in the world between other cultures.
As I am preparing for a new chapter in my life, I have put a lot thought in about what I want out of life and what to look forward to as I get older. In order for one to achieve anything, they need to set goals to reach for. I have a handful of goals for my future, short term and long term, that I will actively work towards in my college years and beyond. In my time at UW Eau Claire, I plan to be involved and engaged in student activities on campus. Being active will help me meet new people, build a better resume, and have fun at college. At UWEC, I would like to get involved in anything musical, along with various clubs and Greek life. Similarly, another goal of mine is to have a job on campus. Having a job will not only help me make some
As I reflect on the decision I made to apply for my Master’s degree within the school counseling field, I began to become more grateful. School counseling wasn’t nearly the major I chose upon entering college for my undergraduate level. I wanted to be a pediatrician. As a senior in high school, I would ponder often about my potential career goals. I wanted to work with children, but I loved Science. My love for Science was undeniable. Majoring in Biological Sciences, and then entering medical school was my goal. A pediatrician seemed like the likely career path to choose, being that I loved children and science. However, my decision began to waver as I continued within my degree. I went from a Biology major to a Teaching of English major.
In my junior year I made a commitment to participate in the IB Career Program and dedicate myself to receiving the certificate. This program entails learning in areas such as moral awareness, social awareness, social and moral responsibility, relationship management, and understanding empathy and compassion. With each day, I would learn more about these areas and apply them to my daily life in positive and reinforcing ways. In the past year I have begun to work with an organization called Uncommon Good, where I now work with Latino students, tutoring to help with homework and any other forms of school related material. In my senior year, applying to many colleges, I have realized that I have a massive amount of accessible resources at my disposal in terms of college councilors and tutors. With the knowledge I have amassed through the Approaches to Learning course at school, I soon was able to distinguish an underlying problem in our educational system today. There is a population of disadvantaged students who could thrive and excel, but lack financial or other external means of doing so.
Since high school most people would ask me what I was going to college for my ideas have changed over time, although my qualities have stayed the same. When becoming a teacher there are certain qualities you need in order to be successful, these certain qualities include: leadership, organization, and being good with children will help me become a successful teacher.
