Introduction
In this paper I will discuss my vision as a psychology practitioner-scholar (McClintock, 2004). First, I will share what I have learned, how I can contribute to the psychology field, my vision and goals. Second, I will discuss the competencies and requirements necessary for my future career in psychology. Third, I will share my action plan to achieving my goals in the field of psychology.
Vision and Goals Throughout this course I have learned that there are many career paths in psychology. This idea has also been used throughout time and history. Pictures, stories, dances and chants have been used in many cultures as healing rituals. Art can be used when it is too difficult to put experiences into words. It can also be used to escape intense emotions (Stuckey & Noble, 2010). The individuals were to complete one exercise from the Web each week. The “gratitude visit,” “three blessings exercise,” and “use your strengths” (Seligman, Rashid, & Parks, 2006) exercises showed significantly lower depression symptoms and an increase in happiness in the participants as a whole. The positive effects on the participants in the study lasted for six months. Seligman, Rashid, & Parks (2006) also conducted a face-to-face study which involved weekly two hour sessions for six weeks. The face-to-face sessions included a lecture-style introduction of the exercise that was to be used that week as well as a discussion of the previous week’s exercise. Participants had to complete the exercises at home and then report back at the next session. A follow-up study was conducted a year later and it showed that the participants in the study had not experienced any depressive symptoms. They also had experienced an increase in life satisfaction.

However, over the years, it has grown into a rigorous science and a separate discipline, with its own sets of guidance and experimental techniques. This paper aims to study the various stages that the science of psychology passed through to reach its contemporary status, and their effects on its development. Your Vision as a Psychology Practitioner-Scholar Introduction One of my visions as a psychology practitioner scholar is becoming a clinical counselor. My purpose in psychology is to help people understand their life in a clear distinct way. I specifically want to target children and, help them grow and be more than they have the potential to be. I want to focus on the child development of children based on their environment. I want to be able understand children react the way they do in certain situations.
Studies show that up to nine percent of teenagers meet criteria for depression at any one time, with as many as one in five teens having a history of depression at some point during adolescence (Cheung et al., 2007). Symptoms in adolescents can manifest differently than in adults due to the physical and social challenges that teenagers encounter. Some of the challenges that teenagers encounter that might lead to depression are peer pressure, changes due to developing bodies, changing hormone levels, peer pressure and sports among others. These challenges present in a teenager’s life can cause high levels of stress and anxiety that affect the teenager’s life in different areas such as school, work, family and their personal, social and family lives. Due to the challenges confronted when living with depression, it is completely necessary to seek professional help once symptoms
The term psychology has many meanings to different people, even to those who work within the psychological field. The word psychology derives from two Greek roots; 'psyche' refers to 'soul' or 'mind' and logo refers to 'the study of'. A more update definition of the word psychology can be found from Atkinson, et al (1991) “The scientific study of behaviours and mental processes.” However on Google Definitions the definition of psychology is “the mental characteristics and attitudes of a person” [accessed 16 September 2011], which gives somewhat of a contradiction. In this assignment I will be outlining and evaluating four key psychological perspectives. The psychological perspectives I have chosen are the behavioural approach, biological approach, cognitive approach and the psychodynamic approach.
Depression is the most common mental health problem in the United States. It affects people of all ages, races and economic backgrounds. In adolescents, as many as one in eight teens suffers with this condition. It can interfere with day-to-day functioning. Many times adolescents feel lost or hopeless and may not know who to turn to for help. This therapeutic environment uses specific objectives and goals to give adolescents the tools and skills they need to cope and function more successfully. This is a positive, caring environment so that each member will feel ready to share and cope with their problems. Currently, there is a lack of support and resources for adolescents with this mental illness and this group fulfills that need. This group is different from other groups of this nature, as members are carefully screened to make sure only those who can truly benefit from it are included.

Adolescent despondency affects the way an individual sleeps, eats, the way they feel about themselves and those around them (“Side Effects of Untreated Depression”). This particular mental disease changes the outlook on a teenager’s view on themselves, loved ones, and their surroundings. Depression can be a responsive action to certain situations, such as emotional trauma, and stress. It can have devastating, and in some cases, life threatening, effects on younger members of society. Due to the fact that normal, unaffected teenagers naturally have fluctuating moods, it is much more difficult to diagnose depression at this age.
