Pleasure through helping others by doing one’s job also comes with a career as a psychologist, whose job is to seek to understand and explain human thoughts, emotions, and behaviors by observing and interpreting how people relate with others and their environments (“Psychologists”). The job may sound as if one just sits and collects survey data, but it actually takes lots of work to do what they actually do. Psychologists help patients by using techniques of observation, assessment, experimentation, and administration of personality, aptitude, and intelligence tests which they use to develop theories about what beliefs and feelings influence a person’s actions (“Psychologists”). By the fact that people nowadays are putting value into the healthy condition of the mind as much as they did into the care of the physical body, psychologists are consulted much more than before. Therefore, the general employment of psychologists is expected to grow twelve percent in several years with the employments increasing in clinics, counseling offices, schools, hospitals, and mental health centers (“Psychologists”). Yet, more requests for the job doesn’t mean that attaining the job would be easier. Mrs. Joyce Trottman, a school psychologist at Grace International School says, “I have been a school psychologist since 2001 and have been solving mysteries of why a child may not be learning nor having social or emotional success and learned how to work as a team with others to help that child,” which explains a general view of what a psychologist should contemplate on in one’s work (Trottman). Many different types of skills are needed in the area where the job takes place. Analytical, communication, and observation skills are essential abilities that a good psychologist should possess (“Psychologists”). Mrs. Trottman says, “A good psychologist needs to have good writing skills to produce understandable reports in a timely manner and good organization skills. Along with these skills, a psychologist needs good ability to work with children and other adults and to express the results of complicated assessments in an understandable way or under the stress of giving results which may not be agreed with or welcomed” (Trottman). Logics and knowledge are important to possess as a psychologist, and in addition, practical ways of thinking and relating closely with the clients is also very crucial. For example, in the case of a psychologist working with children, it is important to also work together with the children’s parents for the children’s benefits (Trottman). This research led to modern psychology and has become increasingly broad since the first notion that one person could observe and measure the reasoning behind another person’s actions. Researchers in the field can study psychology as a whole or one of the various sub-disciplines that psychology breaks down into. These sub-disciplines range from the psychology of learning to fringe theoretical psychology. The men and women who conduct studies in the psychological field, referred to as psychologists, continue research in their sub-disciplines to add to the knowledge of the community. Psychologists focus on the study of the mind while clinicians treat individuals that suffer from psychological disorders. The important qualities that a therapist should have are empathic and great listening skills.
