Abstract The paper will demonstrate how through the use of daycare for children under the age of five, benefits both cognitive and social growth. There is an explanation of how daycare is more than supervision of young children and how children are prepared for elementary school. It will also demonstrate that children from difficult backgrounds benefit from being enrolled in Head Start. There is also the fears some parents may have toward daycare and possible causes of public daycare.

Parents are their child’s first teacher. Parents are the first people to express any sort of dialogue to their baby and teach the child how to play. There are some parents that worry that their child will have less affection or listen to them less if they are enrolled in daycare. Though the parent-child relationship is not affected by daycare no matter how often they attend. “Early child care was observed to affect child attachment only when the mother was already insensitive to the child.” (Hill, C., Weinraub, M., and Hirsh-Pasek, K. 2001) It’s always important that the parents of the child show affection and reassure their child of their love. While in daycare, children are able to advance in their cognitive and social areas more effectively while in the environment. Children are able to socialize with other children and play with developmental toys. The students are also able to learn various activities and games that are there to promote cognitive growth. Another important factor of daycare is the schedule, it is designed to aid the child in their hierarchy of needs. The needs of children start with food and sleep, but going up the pyramid it relies more on emotional and social interactions. Daycare is more beneficial to children then staying at home and watching television. Even if the child does not speak very often, they are still consuming in the language around them. The children can learn other languages from other children in the program. So even though the children may become sick, daycares will not weaken a bond between parent and child. Daycares were designed to assist in the parents being able to go to work, with the knowledge their child is safe and being prepared for kindergarten.
