Cogent Argument Analysis

The purpose of this essay is to see if this following argument is cogent. By applying all three ARG conditions to it, I will be able to know if the argument is cogent. The definition of cogency is an argument that needs to have each premise acceptable, in conclusion, are relevant to the conclusion, and the premises in conclusion must provide adequate grounds for the conclusion. A premise is acceptable if the reviewer can give adequate reasons by making the premise believable. A grade is meant to reflect a teacher’s assessment of a student’s understanding of a subject or mastery of a set of skills, not an assessment of a student’s personal values. The second premise is acceptable because American students don’t have a commitment on what they believe. They could either be religious person or someone who simply have different opinion on a subject. I never heard of a law where you have to believe in what you were taught in school, so American students can still be good in school. Some American students understand the theory of evolution, but do not believe in it. The third premise is acceptable because some American students can have knowledge on a certain topic, and they can either believe in it or not. Understanding the theory of evolution does not assume students should believe in it. Having knowledge does not reflect your beliefs, which is why arguments exist. Relevance means all premises of an argument need to be true, and the premises provide reasons on making the conclusion true. This argument does provide reasons to believing the conclusion to be true. American students who understand the theory of evolution should not be given a lower grade for not believing in it. This is the conclusion for the argument that I am evaluating. The premises in combination are relevant to this conclusion because they give good reasons for students to not get lower grade for not believing in the theory of evolution.
