The last main trait I noticed was the tendency to make the title a question but not to answer it. This is most likely to draw people from both sides of the argument. Over all this genres attributes all are in place to reach more people and have them listen to their argument in an attempt to persuade them. The main objective of Ted Talks is to spread new ideas to as many people as the medium can reach. The three examples I chose did this through varying methods with equally varying success. The first example I chose discussed how to have a political conversation that doesn't just end in heated arguments. The tone the author used
was a fairly lighthearted one. This choice was extremely important to the overall success since a more serious tone would have automatically put people off given the political topic. His thesis is stated right at the beginning of his speech though the title gives away the meaning before hand. Since there isn't a standard opposition to having better conversations he was able to avoid any adversarial statements. This could have easily led to a boring talk about just respecting each other's opinion But the author use of humor and its light tone kept listeners interested. The second ted talk covered the concept of computer learning. This in my opinion was the least successful of the three. He took a serious tone though the entire speech. This combined with the complicated lexis of the topic led to a dry speech about robots. His thesis was not stated till around half the video which had me feeling directionless

For most writers, we must know the different types of argumentation styles along with logical fallacies. There are three main types of argumentation styles including: Aristotelian, Rogerian, and Toulmin. All three styles have their own argumentation spin on arguments. Aristotelian refutes the opposing claim while at the same time promoting its own argument by using supporting evidence. The TED Talk “Why 30 is not the new 20” by Meg Jay, was a powerful and successful speech. Jay delivers an inspirational message to twenty-year-olds to not waste away important years of their life in an unmeaningful relationship or career. Instead she stresses the importance of searching for a life-long partner sooner rather than later in life. She also talked about taking career risks while still young, because these opportunities will likely be indefeasible later in life. Jay 's main points were very effective in persuading one to consider living by this set of social standards. On December 2,2015 I went to to the Lynnhaven building to receive some feedback on my agreement paper for English 111. It was a very rainy day after running through the rain when I reached the writing center room. There was a yellow note saying that the writing center was in the student center until December 4,2015. After reading the note I ran back in the rain to my car.It was to cold to walk it was raining. As I approached the student center I was told by a security guard that the tutoring lab was located on the third floor. I had walked up three flights of stairs. When I had finally reached the third floor,I walk into the tutoring lab. There were about eight tables, but only four staff members and one student. Amen had approached me asking what did I need help with today. I replied saying that I would like some feedback on my paper for English. He then pointed to the writing table and said “she can assist you with your paper”.

John Marsh, Ph.D., shares his epiphany, that his sharing the popular belief that higher education was the answer to bringing about economic equality and curing poverty, was in fact wrong; in this short selection, “Why Education Is Not an Economic Panacea”, taken from his book, “Class Dismissed: Why We Cannot Teach or Learn Our Way Out of Inequality”. In this excerpt, Marsh’s narrow vision seems to have opened up somewhat, however, it does not demonstrate that his visual field widened enough to see that there is much, much more than simply economics or education that is at play in determining where people end up in the spectrum of being considered successful in the United States. Throughout Dan Pallotta’s TED Talk he argues that the discrimination against nonprofits is limiting their ability to change the world. He believes that nonprofits operate under one rule book, while for-profits operate under another. Honestly, this weeks lecture for Senior Symposium was kind of disappointing. After a two week dearth of stimulating speeches, students piled once again into the Hall Campus Center’s Ballroom only to be told they would not be hearing a well thought speech crafted specifically for them. Instead, they were told that they would be viewing a prerecorded Ted Talk that was only tangentially relevant to the reading and only moderately relatable to life as a college student in Lynchburg. The real life professors who introduced the video and answered questions did a fantastic job but the whole exercise felt a bit cheap after four solid weeks of excellent lectures in the flesh. Over the recent four months in Communication 1402 class, I have addressed three formal speechs and completed a number of chapters in the corresponding textbook “Communication Works”. This course of Communication aims to provide general information what public speaking is and how to address a public speaking. Recalling back the experience during the processes of completing the Speech to Imform, Speech to Persuade, and Group Presentation, I will draw a conclusion about this course and these three presentations in five aspects, comprising my previous perception of public speaking before this course; learning from the Speech to Inform; the goal and evaluation of Speech to Persuade; learning from the Group Presentation; the most important thing learned from this course.
I have also learned about different types of audiences and speeches including persuasive, informative, entertaining and delivering special occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever I was making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so with confidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that capturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was therefore vital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values (Lucas, 2011).
