Technology is like a presidential election. Either it benefits humankind, or it leads to more problems. In the novel The Codebreaker the Y2K circuit is a form of technology which benefits and disadvantages the characters of the novel. Bolts is able to ultimately save Rutledge’s life by using the Y2K. The Puppet Master is able to use it to block cell phone reception at the school. The Y2K is fictional, but there are many other technologies that represent the exact same things, beneficial or problematic. Are there other examples in history and/or society where technology has been used to both positively and negatively impact mankind? First, an example of technology affecting humankind would be the invention of gunpowder. Gunpowder invented in China was is used in fireworks, bombs, and the propulsion of bullets. Gunpowder The use of gunpowder in things such as bullets, fireworks, and even bombs can be used positively or negatively. Bullets can be used to hunt and defend a person’s self and property. Fireworks are used to celebrate or honor something or someone (Heather Whipps). Bombs can be used to open locked doors by our army to free people. Social media allows you and your friends to publicly share photos, talk, make plans, and give out information about yourself. Those were all positives but could easily be negatives as well. When you receive a friend request on Facebook, the profile pic used could easily be faked and so could the person’s identity. By putting something on social media, you allow others to gain access to your photos, messages, arranged plans, and even your address, depending on what’s on there.
