I want to take part in this Clinical Rotation course because of a statistic that I’ve read in the news stating that almost 50% of all students end up in an entirely different career field than the one which they majored in during college. During this class, I will be exposed to a multitude of different career options that can guide me in choosing the right courses in high school as well as determine what to major in during college. This experience will afford me the opportunity to view a variety of medical careers from a first hand point of view, therefore broadening my understanding of what work fields would best match my interest and skill set. Previously, I have worked an internship at the Texas Medical Board where I examined and scanned
x-rays, reviewed and processed patient complaints, enforced consequences onto malpracticing medical practitioners and more. This job gave me the chance to see real issues that patient have had and in turn, furthered my interest in entering the medical field in the future. From this course, I hope to gain experience in the medical field through learning and observing how professionals execute their responsibilities, as well as gain insight toward the types of careers that would suit me the best. Having taken Integrated Physics and Chemistry in middle school as well as Pre-AP Biology and Pre-AP Chemistry in my freshman and sophomore year, I have always had a profound interest in science and the healthcare industry and hope to learn how these skills can be integrated into a medical career.

Over the last few years, I shadowed a Primary Care Adult Nurse Practitioner whose office is located in the underserved urban area of Irvington, NJ. She also takes care of patients from the surrounding areas of Irvington, Newark, and East Orange, all of which have very large underserved populations including African Americans, Latinos, and patients from the Middle East. During my clinical shadowing, I gained a appreciation for the complexity of treating long term chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, HIV, and hypertension. In many cases these conditions were exacerbated due to poor nutrition, non-compliance, and lack of education about healthy lifestyle choices. I gained a keen understanding of the importance of patient education and the ability to connect patients with community services to help them with their economic and social challenges.
Through this essential, I have been able to integrate biophysical, psychosocial, analytical, and organizational sciences into my area of practice as an educator. I learned to improve my advocacy and mentoring skills providing my students a non-judgmental learning environment. The clinical rotations often bring forth ethical dilemmas and through debriefing the students and this writer are able to advocate for the patient. I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. The passionate way in which he discussed the practice of medicine led me to develop an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. Utilising John’s model of structured reflection I will reflect on the care I instigated to a patient with complex needs. The patient in question was admitted to the Emergency Assessment Unit for surgical patients then transferred to the ward where I work as a staff nurse.
After taking two patients load for three weeks, I finally took full patients load on the fourth week of the placement. When I was taking two patients load, I still had the chance to research about the patients’ conditions, medical history and medications before I administer the medication at the beginning of my shift (especially on morning shift). Unfortunately, when taking four patients load for the first time, I did not have time for research before care for the patients. Moreover, I struggled keep up with the plan that I made and failed to prioritise the care. For example, I almost administer the regular aspirin to a patient who had bleeding during the night. Since starting this class, introduction to health care, I have begun to think about what the future holds for me and what I will pursue with my college degree. At this point in time my career goal is to become a physician assistant in orthopedic surgery. I plan on working in a hospital setting where I can continue to learn and practice my profession. This reflection of vital signs will go into discussion about the strengths and weaknesses of each vital sign and the importance of each of them. Vital signs should be assessed many different times such as on admission to a health care facility, before and after something substantial has happened to the patient such as surgery and so forth (ref inter). I learned to assess blood pressure (BP), pulse (P), temperature (T) and respiration (R) and I will reflect and discuss which aspects were more difficult and ways to improve on them. While pulse, respiration and temperature were fairly easy to become skilled at, it was blood pressure which was a bit more difficult to understand.
In order to determine whether or not clinical medicine was the right career for me, I started shadowing Dr. Richard Turner in the ER. Through my experiences with him, I learned that medicine is a problem solving process. As I watched, he would take a patient's history and try to piece together the correct diagnosis by deciding which scenarios were more likely than others. I was attracted by the dynamic nature of each patient's diagnosis and the necessity for an open mind. My hobby of flying has taught me to look at everything in life with a new perspective and to assess the situation from as many angles as possible. Watching Dr. Turner has confirmed my perception of a medical career and the nature of the work involved. Since I love puzzles and problems, the problem solving aspect also increased my desire to become a physician.
My clinical rotation in the acute care hospital has definitely been a great learning experience, it was a big transition for me having been working in a long-term care facilities for six years. There were three positive aspects about my performance that I will take away from this learning experience.
This reflective essay will discuss three skills that I have leant and developed during my placement. The three skills that I will be discussing in this essay are bed-bath, observing a corpse being prepared for mortuary and putting canulla and taking it out. These skills will be discussed in this essay using (Gibb’s, 1988) model. I have chosen to use Gibb’s model because I find this model easier to use and understand to guide me through my reflection process. Moreover, this model will be useful in breaking the new skills that I have developed into a way that I can understand. This model will also enable me to turn my experiences into knowledge that I can refer to in the future when facing same or similar situations. Gibbs model seems to be straightforward compared to the other model which is why I have also chosen it. So I became a volunteer firefighter/ EMT-b and then worked as an operating room aide at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. Through these experiences I realized that I communicate well with others, thrive in high intensity situations, and believe in treating others with respect in all situations.
