Nursing is a practice discipline. The learning process for students commonly involves more than acquiring cognitive knowledge. This usually involves the practice of the student nurse taking the information that is learned in the classroom and applying it in the clinical areas. For the student nurse to provide safe, reliable care to the patients that he/she cares for, the clinical instructor must give thorough and timely feedback regarding the students’ performance (Indar-Maraj, 2007). The clinical competence evaluation of the student nurse is an essential part of the process. Clinical competence evaluation is defined as an integrated form of evaluation that is geared toward combining knowledge, understanding, problem solving, technical skills, …show more content…
The journaling allowed the student to self-reflect and make corrections as they saw fit. The instructor could follow the journaling and give feedback immediately to improve the care given. The relationship between the instructor and student is important for the success of journaling. When a student feels that the writing’s that he/she are submitting are remaining confidential, then the student will be more apt to divulge their real feelings and experiences (Riuz-Lopez, et al., 2015). Students find that they take owner ship of the learning by using the reflective journaling over the checklist format. The instructor gauges how they are doing by comparing the week to week journaling and communicating with the student. It allows the instructor to see if there is a connection between old knowledge and the newly presented information. The instructor is there to guide the student to further improve the journaling process. By directing students to collect pertinent information, by probing and asking pointed questions, instructors direct students toward thinking exercises that foster a deeper understanding. The process of reflection is guided rather than left open to free-form, unstructured comments …show more content…
Again, this is when the instructor should give them feedback and offer support and reassurance. In the discussion, earlier I mentioned an idea of doing a social blog for the millennial age group and this may help prevent this barrier by having a designated area where they can go and that they may feel more comfortable using an online blog than to write a paper.
The third barrier mentioned is for the student to stay on track. If the first two barriers were alleviated, then this one may be easier to accomplish. Instructors need to be clear about the required content of the journal and ensure that the participants keep to the topic (Hayman, Wilkes, & Jackson,
Introduction The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. While gaining experience in the nursing field through my clinical settings, I have realized as a nursing student there are areas I need further development in. In this paper, I will address two of my learning needs and my goals for each.
According to Weis/Tappen (2010) competency is defined as “the demonstrated ability to carry out specific tasks or activities with reasonable skill and safety that adheres to the prevailing standard of practice in the nursing community” (p. 262). To be competent a person should be able to perform a set skill at an expected level. Pertaining to nursing, competence is shown by skill provided in healthcare with safety and understanding of how it is to be performed. The nurse is responsible for continuing competency throughout his/her career in order to meet the performance level set by the healthcare facility they are employed by.

...ves with practice, it is important for students to gain knowledge about the skill and use them when on clinical placements. Learning these skills will also prepare the student nurses in future to delegate task when they qualify and become RN’s. In relation to my nursing practice, when I become a registered nurse, I will assist student nurses in their career by delegating tasks to them that are within their level of competence as well as making sure that all tasks assigned to them are duly supervised and follow up on the delegated task. I will encourage them to seek clarification where necessay. Providing feedback and praising them for work well done is another thing I would bring into my practice. I will equally inform them through feedback of any task which did not work well and show them areas where they need to improve upon.
SMITHS, S, DUELL, D and MARTIN, B (2008) Clinical Nursing Skills basic to advanced skills. New Jersey: Person Education Inc.
It prepares a novice to be able to perform basic skills throughout their career. Learning is related in the classroom by simulation labs and clinical instructors. Educators consider nursing education to be serious. Their role in preparing nursing students is to convey safe practice for patients. They focus on educating students to learn the knowledge of essential care for different patients. New graduates who learn the sufficient knowledge and skills will be able to understand aspects to protect and design for the nurse and patient. Students are taught to recognize safety threats and will understand the significance of reporting errors for future prevention.

Student nurses depend on the knowledge proficiency of the nurse to be able to consolidate and apply knowledge in a real life setting. Such roles of the nurse mandates him/her to have a good scientific basis for his/her practice.
For the outcome, Clinical Competence I have learned the importance of the nursing process in my current class, Skills and Concepts. This information is relatively new to me, so I know I have plenty of room to grow in this area. I have learned how to utilize the resources that I am provided. One resource in particular is my pocket guide. This has been a useful tool in helping learn and write a nursing diagnosis based upon a given situation. As I progress through the rest of this class; I hope by the end to be more competent in ways of providing the best possible care while utilizing the nursing process.
I believe placing student nurses in the clinical setting is vital in becoming competent nurses. Every experience the student experiences during their placement has an educative nature therefore, it is important for the students to take some time to reflect on these experiences. A specific situation that stood out to me from my clinical experience was that; I didn’t realize I had ignored the patient’s pain until I was later asked by the nurse if the patient was in any pain.
The profession of nursing is always regarded as complex, dynamic and noble. The nursing profession requires many things such as hard work, vast knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a passion for the noble profession. All these qualities are needed to be an effective nurse. Today, nurses are living in a world of ever changing field of medicine. The present patient statistics pose, nurses are expected to take responsibility of accomplishing the requirements.
I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself “what have I learned this semester?” and “what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?”. Answering both these questions will help me with my last step of my self-evaluation, developing a plan to learn new skills.
For competency-based education to be successful in medical education, they state that competencies need to be defined. They also state that faculty need to be trained on the evaluation process. Students need to reflect on their learning process and to evaluate their own skills because this is part of competency-based education. The authors state that they believe that competency-based education is a beneficial way to ensure that students will be able to provide competent care to patients, but better assessment tools are needed to evaluate students.
Addition to this the evaluation actions of the reflective journals emerge to be significant issue in enhancing and improving the commitment to reflection and learning. In this paper it discovers about the impact of the use of writing journal and feedback formative on the excellence of reflective practices. The methodology used in this paper
The writing class session I observed is a packaged program in which the students have been participating in for 5 months. They all know the routine of the reading and writing workshop and understand “the Daily 5.” The student’s movements are purposeful and there is little time wasted in transitions. The books used by students become more complicated as the students ability strengthens. At the end of the workshop, Mrs. Rammond praised those students who used their time efficiently during “the Daily 5.” She spoke directly to the students who wrote in their journals and asked them to share their entries. The students learned some new trivia about insects, practiced writing and then had some time for art.
