The author states how competency-based education is used in health professions and in higher education. The author explains how competency-based education is implemented in a health science radiology program and that competency-based education is effective in connecting the instructional and clinical courses.

For competency-based education to be successful in medical education, they state that competencies need to be defined. They also state that faculty need to be trained on the evaluation process. Students need to reflect on their learning process and to evaluate their own skills because this is part of competency-based education. The authors state that they believe that competency-based education is a beneficial way to ensure that students will be able to provide competent care to patients, but better assessment tools are needed to evaluate students.

The authors discuss how to implement competency-based education in an online post-degree dental hygiene program. The results state that the students satisfied the goals and competencies of the program. Students and faculty believe that the program provides a great learning experience. Students state that the program is hard, but they believe that they learn more from the online courses compared to traditional courses. They also state that the program prepares them for different areas in the work force. Some of the faculty state that the workload is increased with the online courses, and other faculty state the workload is the same as traditional courses. Faculty state that student learning is increased in the competency-based education courses.
