How to Make a Clay Pot
There is an easy way to make a nice clay pot with your hands and a spinning wheel. I started making clay pots my junior year in high school. It was a little challenging at first, but the more practice I had, the better I got. Making clay pots is fun and relaxing. When making a pot on a wheel, there are a few simple steps you can use to achieve the perfect pot.
First the right materials are needed. Get some old clothes that can get dirty, water, a half-pound of clay, glaze, a wire, a pottery wheel, and a kiln. The pottery wheel and kiln are pricey, but there are places to go and get the job done if someone cannot afford it on their own. Also make sure the right mind set is being displayed; this type of activity requires a lot of patience. Once all the materials are gathered, a pot is ready to be created.
To get started, get the half pound of clay and start pressing it down on a table. The reason for this step is to get the clay workable. Do not fold the

clay over itself because that will cause the clay to have air bubbles. Check the clay by cutting it in half with a wire. When the clay is cut in half and there are no air bubbles, it is good to go. If the clay does not have air bubbles, it is best to rework the clay. Next, roll the clay in a ball and dry the surface of the wheel. Then place the clay in the middle of the wheel. “Pat the clay down into a cone like shape; if the clay is not in a cone like shape, your pot will not look good”. Once the clay is shaped the right way, start spinning the wheel and wet the clay. Next center the clay by placing one hand on the side and another hand on top of the clay. “The hand on the side should push towards the middle of the wheel and the hand on top should just keep the clay pushing up”. After the pot is centered, wet the hands and start raising the clay up. The next thing to do is to stick a thumb slowly into the middle of the clay until it makes a hole. When this step is complete, stick about four fingers into the hole and slowly pull out until the hole is big as the bottom. Next, place five fingers on the edge of the newly widened hole.
“Place one hand on the outside and the other hand on the inside of the clay wall, make sure they are directly in line with each other”. After that, pull up the walls by starting at the bottom of the pot and pulling it up to the top. Continue this step until desired height. When finished, get a wire and use it to cut the bottom off the wheel. To do this, stop the wheel and wet it without getting the pot wet. Then take the wire and slowly pull it forward till the pot is off. The last thing to do is dry the pot by air for two nights (three if the pot is still damp). After that foot the pot. Footing the pot is when the pot is being trimmed down a little and rings are being made on the bottom of the pot with a trimming tool. Once the pot is footed, use the kiln to fire the pot; this will only take one night. Next, take the pot out of the kiln and glaze it. Once the pot is glazed, put it back in the kiln one more time to finish the
pot. Making pottery is a practice makes perfect kind of thing. There will be a lot of trial and error; but like I said before, this process takes a lot of patience. Nobody is gets there pot “perfect” on the first try, so there’s nothing to worry about. The more practice you have the better. If you follow these easy steps I have given you, you will be making the “perfect” pot in no time.
I am a pottery maker for the king of Crete. I create very elaborate pottery for the king. Two of the types of pottery are known as Kamares ware and Marine Style. These two types of pottery are some of the best pottery that has ever been made in our time. Our pottery is created with a flowing, naturalistic shape and design. We pottery makers put images of animals, sea and plant life on our pottery.
You first need to mix up your ingredients for the dough, of course. Make sure that the dough is not so moist that it will stick to your pasta maker. Also, make sure that the dough is not too dry, or it will fall apart when it comes out. Mother thing that makes it easier when using this pasta maker is to have two people working it. One will need to hold on to the dough and feed it in while another turns the crank to make sure that the dough does not try to bunch up and get clumpy. Do this a little at a time so that you can straighten the dough as it comes out so that there is not just a big lump of clay at the end of the process. All in all, it is a very simple process even though it is a bit easier with two people working together.
The Shang Dynasty invented and, over the years, perfected the technique of casting a bronze vessel from a clay mold assembly, which this wine vessel has also been made from using those techniques (Cantor). This mold was formed around a model of the vessel and was then cut into sections that were carved or impressed in the desired design, in this case the braided or grid design, on the inner or outer surfaces. The decorated clay piece-mold was then fired and reassembled around a clay core. Small bronze spacers were used to hold the piece-mold and the clay core apart. Then, molten bronze was poured into the mold. Using this piece-mold casting technique helped the bronze worker to achieve greater sharpness and definition in any intricate design
Once you have gathered all your materials you should put on your safety goggles before you turn on the heat source, also place a paper towel on a flat surface or table and put one graham cracker down onto the paper towel. Then, you should place your marshmallow on the top of the stick, you should place it so that it is stable but not far enough that you see the stick through the marshmallow. Next you should hold the marshmallow over the top of the flame and rotate the stick a few rotations, until the flame is on the marshmallow. Once it is heated you will need to blow it out, and cool it off. Then you turn off your flame, or heat source and slide the marshmallow onto the graham cracker that you place on a table or flat surface earlier. Later you stack the chocolate on top of one of the marshmallow and graham crackers. You could also place the marshmallow on top of the chocolate, this is your preference. Lastly finish off the s’more by placin...

The crucible and lid are heated at the beginning of the experiment before being weighed so that any moisture in the crucible is burned away.
4. Pour about 300mL of tap water into the beaker. Set up a hot-water bath using a hot plate, retort stand, and thermometer clamp. Alternatively, use a Bunsen burner, retort stand, ring clamp, thermometer clamp, and wire gauze.
One method of the nomadic plains tribes for cooking was to use rawhide cooking vessels which came from the hump of the buffalo, staked over a mound of earth and left to dry in the shape of a bowl. The pot was put in a shallow hole near the fire, and then carefully selected stones that would not shatter easily would be put in the fire and transferred to the bowl with wood or bone tongs to heat the contents of the pot.
First there are a few materials needed to take an impression. The main ingredient is the alginate. Four or five table spoons of alginate are just enough to get the job done. A mixing bowl capable of holding at least three cups of the mixture is also needed. A spatula is needed for mixing the ingredients together. Another import...
Mendocino College Raku firings start with glazing outdoors as the gas in the kiln is lit. The pieces are then loaded into the kiln until the temperature rises to about 1800 degrees F, then we peer through the spy hole to see if the cone has changed. When the cone looks like it has melted, it is time to take to take the pieces out of the kiln. For safety, we wear protective clothing made from 100% cotton, closed-toe shoes, heat resistant gloves/mask, and use long-handled steel tongs. Items are then removed from the kiln and placed into a covered metal container filled with a combustible material such like newspaper and sawdust to provide a reducing atmosphere for the glaze. After the shredded newspaper begins to ignite, the lid is placed on to remove the oxygen, extinguishing the flames. Once the pottery is removed from the can, it is usually left out to cool, then cleaned with Comet Bleach Powder.
Pottery has always been a part of Native American Culture. Dating back to 25,000 B.C, pottery was more than just a work of art. It was used for things such as cooking, storage, and even musical instruments and ceremonial items. The use of pottery is also considered ceremonial and religious. Since sometime ago, Native American’s have used pottery to represent birds, plants, spirits and even Gods. Native American women have perfected their pottery skills over time. Women became a bigger part of making pottery, because most of the men during this time were the hunters, and the women were gatherers. Native American women often would make different shapes and sizes of pottery depending on what they were trying to gather. A lot of the early pottery was undecorated, and the only “decorated” part was coil or the texture of the pottery, such as the jar shown below.
2. Step 2: Heat the mixture: Make sure the agarose dissolves. Wait until it boils and when you are going to transfer the mixture, wear gloves to avoid getting burnt. Transfer the mixture to a removable gel tray. 3.
The art piece I chose was a pottery that I found very interesting, not only the art itself but the story behind it. This was a red-figure archaic type of pottery; the name of the pottery is called a Terracotta hydria, which is also known as a water jar. This specific pot was made in Greece and South Italy, around 340-330BC. It was also found at Canosa before the year 1878. According to the MET museum “This pot was created by a group of BM F 308, the specific artist is unknown. However, the potter and art was produced in Greek, South Italy, and Apulia.”
