Having the opportunity to go through the entire hiring process for a contract position was great practice for me as a future leader. There were several steps that my administrators and I followed; they may not be the steps that other leaders go through. However, they worked well for us/me, and I felt as though I gained knowledge from our process.
*I created a list of several interview questions that I share with my principal. There were incorporated into the interview. Here are the questions.
1. How would you motivate a non-motivated student?
2. How would you handle late work? i.e. Loss of points? Detention? Call parents? What is your philosophy on it?
3. What made you decide to go into teaching?
4. What are a few things you would do to build positive relationships with your students? Parents? Co-workers?
5. Explain your classroom management.

Our second interviewee was a brand new teacher too. Those two interviews were not bad interviews, but you could tell they were both nervous. Neither of them could thoroughly answer several of our questions.
*The third interviewee had been a student teacher in the seventh grade room (along with the sixth and eighth rooms) for the previous eight weeks. He knew the subject and had graduated and already pasted his Praxis. He also didn’t have a classroom to relate to some of the questions, but he answered better than the first two. He also had a great relationship with the kids. A great point that he brought up was the kids that he would have next year, would be the kids that he had this year. The kids LOVED him!
*The fourth and final interviewee was teaching at another school district. He interviewed very well, and had several examples to enlighten us with. He shared several great ideas that we could adopt into our middle school. He was also going to school to become an
My assignment is a combination of two interviews. I interviewed an Assistant Principal, Ms. Katis Romig, as well as, our Curriculum Director, Mrs. Maria Petkanas. They are both responsible for the curriculum development and instruction for the school where I work, P.S. 811Q. I also learned a fair amount from Ms. Romig and Mrs. Petkanas including that District 75 Citiwide Special Education’s Deputy Superintendent, Ms. Barbara Joseph, had given the school feedback and suggested writing curriculum and textbooks. This was the only feedback she gave our principal during her observation last week.
The main reason I would like to become a teacher is the love for little kids. I really enjoy being around children. After teaching Sunday School to children up to 8 years of age for over five years, I feel that I can relate to them and connect with them very well. I also feel that students look up to teachers, so they are a very big influence on the children's’ lives. I would love to know that I could make such a big influence on a child’s life. In my opinion teachers have an impact on the life of every student they ever have in class.
At the end of the 2006/2007 school year, the science department of an areas high school lost half their teachers and performed interviews to replace the ones they lost as well as recruit for the new positions needed for the growing enrollment rates. The department ended up hiring four new teachers for the 2007/2008 school year.
Hints: If you’re not sure how to answer a question, look at the examples given. Also, think about what the students on the tape had to say. How did they describe their strengths and needs? What accommodations did they ask for? What did they say they needed to work on in school?
In chapter 4 of From Discipline to Culturally Responsive Engagement, the importance of the physical classroom environment and routines are discussed. Several proactive management strategies are also included such as layout, decorations, and ways to establish routines. These strategies encourage students to be on task and engaged in learning. The physical environment of any room can have an impression on anyone in that room and this is especially true for students who spend several hours a day in a school. “As a teacher, you may, sometimes unknowingly, influence student’s behavior in negative ways through the arrangement of classroom furniture” (Pinto, 2013). Teachers should be aware of how an environment can affect the way a student learns to avoid isolating them. Establishing routines allow students to feel a sense of security and comfort. For the lead teacher interview assignment, I had the opportunity to sit down with and interview my son’s EC teacher from last year, Mrs. Hamm. Since my son started at the school last year, Mrs. Hamm has helped him in so many different ways. Mrs. Hamm has been teaching for over 20 years from her home state of Pennsylvania and more currently at Mount Energy Elementary School in Creedmoor, NC. Mrs. Hamm has been teaching at Mount Energy Elementary School in Creedmoor, NC for the last 12 years and recently awarded “Teacher of the Year”. Mrs. Hamm, up until this school year, was the main EC teacher for all grades Kindergarten through fifth grade at Mount Energy Elementary School. As of the present school year, the school district made the determination that she was over the acceptable number of students. As a result, they decided to hire an additional EC teacher and assistant to teach grades 3-5th and Mrs. Hamm would teach grades K-2. Mrs. Hamm was the teacher of 18 students until this decision was made, now with grades K-2, she has 9 students in her class.

I paraphrased at the very end of our conversation, and there was a lot of information the teachers shared. I should have broken down the paraphrasing to make sure everything is accurate. Also, in my last interview, I used words such as “so” and “um”. I have noticed myself doing it again during the interview, even though I was trying to avoid using those words. During the session, the use of language that was used to speak to the teachers showed a success. I was very proactive in asking questions and clarifying answers to make sure I receive accurate and relevant information. I also focused on perception checking, which is an important step in problem identification and it helps build rapport with the teachers. I have noticed that Mrs. V felt more comfortable with me because I didn’t judge her about her decision to keep the student in the back and avoiding contact with him. Although, I did not typically agree with her method, I tried to be understanding. She has a lot of students and it becomes very stressful when one student exhibits such disturbing behaviors in class. I chose to do my teacher interview in my home town at Richard D. Crosby Elementary School. This K-3rd grade building is very new, it was built in 2010. It has 4 pods, one for each grade level and has a large discovery center in each pod. The school is very colorful, with each pod a different color so the children find it easy to go from area to area. I did my interview with Mrs. Doe, a special education teacher. Her room has a lot of materials for learning and is set up to have several work stations for group activities. Mrs. Doe shares her students with other special education teachers and also has a special education classroom aide. My research question is how does a teacher’s perspective on learning reflect theories and concepts in educational psychology? Mrs. Doe is faced with many challenges in her classroom, overcrowding, multi-cultural differences, learning disabilities, several students with low socioeconomic status and English language learners. There are many challenges for Mrs. Doe to deal with, but she has been teaching for 21 years and has a lot of experience. She started out as a regular classroom teacher, but switched to special education and has done so well that when she asked if she could return to the regular classroom setting, the Superintendent begged her to stay in the special education department because of her success.
The first main reason that I have chosen teaching as a profession is because I believe that it’s continuous rewards will help me to lead a happy and fulfilled life. For example, teaching young children is one of the few jobs in which you can give and receive hugs on a daily basis. Children have an innocence and a passion for knowledge that I find amazing and I do not feel complete unless I am around them. Teaching will help provide this fulfillment for me every day. Also, teaching is a job in which it is ok, and even encouraged, to laugh each and every day. I feel that this is important for a person’s well-being and I think that it helps to keep people young and alive. I feel that in many other professions the day-to-day routine would become monotonous and boring, and I do not think that I would live a truly happy and fulfilled life unless I could be around children. I feel that a classroom provides many unique and dynamic opportunities every single day and I find that very appealing. Also, I am a very relationship-oriented person and I feel that I will enjoy building unique relationships with each child. I plan on knowing every child as thoroughly as possible because I feel that this will help me to be better at my job.
One of the most effective ways teachers are able to manage a classroom is through developing positive relationships with students (Emmer & Evertson, 2013). When students feel they are valued and cared for by their teacher, they are much more likely to comply with rules and procedures. A classroom teacher has the great responsibility and privilege to be around students for up to seven hours per day, five days per week for around nine months and during that time, teachers must work to develop positive teacher-student relationships with each student (Boynton & Boynton, 2005). When students are able to experience healthy relationships with their teachers, they grow personally and are self-motivated and achieve academic success (Tassione & Inlay, 2014). There are a number of ways to enrich these relationships and they are all initiated by the teacher. While there are many ways teachers will find to develop teacher-student relationships, only a select number of them will be discussed here.
Classroom management is a necessary component to every classroom. It includes creating a set of rules and clear expectations that all students follow. This helps unify the classroom for both the teacher and students allowing for a smooth, effective, and educational environment. When the students are aware of what is expected, they are motivated in order to attain the goals dispensed by the teacher. As a future educator, I have many goals. My first goal would be to never overpower my students. Being a teacher should not be a job, it should be a passion. I have decided to become a teacher because I love children. I enjoy watching them grow, and I want to make a difference in the lives of my students. As a teacher, I will do everything that I can to ensure that each becomes a productive, successful citizen in life. In order for me to obtain this goal, I will create a loving, positive, respectful, and safe learning environment where each student will be treated equally and be encouraged to do his or her best. Keeping this in mind, there are four elements that I must remember which includes (1) how young children develop, (2) what they should know and be able to do, (3) instructional strategies that I have learned, and (4) my feelings regarding parent involvement.
