Communication is an essential part of every classroom. Whatever the communication method is each of them are vital to the effectiveness of a teacher and overall successful classroom. Communication can come in many different forms: one important form is parent to teacher communication with concerns pertaining to their children. Another is teacher to child in order to redirect or instruct. My current placement is a general education first grade classroom. My mentor teacher believes whole-heartedly that strong communication is the most effective way to support the students that are struggling in school.

This is present when a teacher instructs the whole class to act a certain way or to complete a certain task. In my placement classroom, my mentor teacher uses many different verbal commands in her classroom with the students. When lining up she says “I am looking for my 4-S line (silent, still, straight, and smiling).” In the hallway she directs the students and really gets their attention by saying “I am looking for someone that is really showing me a 4-S line to move their clip up when we get back to the room.” She generally uses verbal communication in order to express her expectations for the students’ behavior and participation. When sitting on the rug during story time, our students can oftentimes get wiggly and distracted. One form of verbal communication that she commonly uses is “I am going to close my eyes, when I open them everyone is going to be sitting still and crisscross applesauce with their hands in their laps.” The effectiveness of my mentor teacher’s direct expectations is unbelievable. Her students are very responsive to her expectations for classroom behavior and actions. Teacher to class communication is also present during her lessons. If we are working on a problem that she knows everyone should know the answer to she says “I want everyone to repeat the answer.” This method is effective due to the directness of it. Effective communication is a key principle for developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults. By ensuring that communication is effective it provides clarity on what behaviour is expected and a clear understanding of the tasks. In providing this children and young people will feel they are able to join in and it also provides positive experiences in variety of situations. The result is children will feel more at ease within the school setting and with those around them. By listening to what a child, young person or adult has to say a sense of value and self-worth can be achieved, which forms another factor in developing positive relationships, trust.
Effective communication is important when working with children and young people. Effective communication is good as it helps make relationships between the child and adult, this will further the children’s communication skills and they will then be able to make friends. Communication is also important as it’s how we express and share our feelings, needs and ideas, that’s why it’s important for adults to make good relationships with the children. Children should feel comfortable and relaxed when communicating as this makes them more likely to enjoy communication and be able to discuss any problems to the adults.

I would like to start out by saying congratulations on your engagement. Communication is something we all humans use. Communication “is the sharing of information between individuals by using speech”. People have ways of communicating some have their weaknesses in conversations and others have their strengths. When I communicate with others I feel that some things I say I do not verbalize right. I have two strengths and three weaknesses in my communicating. My three weakens in my communication are, check nonverbal feedback, to make people wrong and recognize that people understand information in different ways and my two strengths in my communication are being flexible, and take responsibility for the communication.

In the classroom I am observing in I have watched how the teacher and the students start and end their day by following different procedures for ex: attendance, portfolios, grades, and class rituals like morning meeting, transitions and end of the day procedures. All of these procedures and rituals contribute to the classroom culture and are parts of instructional practices. So when the students come first in, in the morning they have morning circle where they do attendance, weather, lunch choices, how I feel today chart and much more. Each student has a job during morning circle which rotates every day so not every student has the same job.
