practicum. I have been observing my students for five weeks now and I was able to decipher the strong readers and weak readers through class behaviors and participation. Through interactions and observations student one I choose as a strong reader and student 2 as a weak reader. Student one was labeled strong because he is in the Highly Capable group. I was drawn to this student because every time I observed him, he was reading. He finished every assignment first and would pull his book out. He is very good at multitasking as well, he can have a conversation and continue to read and fully comprehend both tasks. I am not in class during SSR, but I know this is his favorite time of class. As for student 2 I labeled her a weak reader for a couple …show more content…
She is a very sweet little girl that just wants to be successful. She likes to read just mostly at home with her parents. She loves just to sit at her dinner table and read with a parent. Both parents have different methods of reading with her. Her papa will stop every few pages to talk about what they have read and she said she really likes that. With her mom they just read to build her confidence, both methods are working for her. While in class reading was not as fun because most students read faster than her. During SSR she can read Minecraft which is small sentences to describe a …show more content…
There are similarities between both student’s responses. Neither of the students prefer Storytown over SSR. Through observation of the entire class and discussing with their classroom teacher, majority of the class had the same opinions, boring. Both students I interview prefer SSR due to getting to read what they enjoy. When forced to read an uninteresting book, reading becomes a chore and not interesting. Student 1 stated some of the stories are interesting, but not interesting enough to pick over Harry Potter. For my future classroom I would like to incorporate as much SSR as I can while planning what to do after students are finished with
After the Civil War, America went through a period of Reconstruction. This was when former Confederate states were readmitted to the Union. Lincoln had a plan that would allow them to come back, but they wouldn’t be able to do it easily. He would make 10% of the population swear an oath of loyalty and establish a government to be recognized. However, he was assassinated in Ford’s Theater and Andrew Johnson became the president; Johnson provided an easy path for Southerners. Congress did their best to ensure equal rights to freedmen, but failed because of groups who were against Reconstruction, white southern Democrats gaining control within the government and the lack of having a plan in place for recently freedmen.
While the reading assessment will be different for all students I learned that I must be attentive to the student and what they say, also I learned that even if the student gets frustrated I should not aid in the reading that is in front of them. Instruction for the students should be clear and precise; I believe that every student should have their own Vocabulary Dictionaries in the classroom. I believe that this will aid the students so much in the way that they will be able to acquire harder words and each students will be different, they will be able to have fun with it as well as learn at the same
The running record assignment provided me with insight on how to effectively assess a student, analyzing and interpret data and consider strategies to address areas of need and/or strengths. The process of giving this assessment has allowed me to better understand and appreciate running records. I understand the value of using an assessment that evaluates a student’s reading ability. The data is vital information that influences instruction and planning.
Daily practice in content-specific and academic vocabulary enhanced her ability to comprehend complex text. Additionally, grade-appropriate news-related websites provided an authentic context to practice newly-acquired print skills while learning
Students who fail to meet social standards for achievement may have limited vocational opportunities later and they may exhibit more conduct and social problems in the school setting (Howell K., et al., 2006). It would be beneficial for RIF to implement this program as a continuance to accompany the work that students put in during their summer break. In order to take different cultures into account RIF tutors will be available who speak different languages. Books from around the world will help encourage multicultural student to read. In order to reach any student that need extra help rides to and from a designated safe study would be arranged. The purpose of continuing the program through the course of the school year is to improve overall academic reading success. In order to ascertain whether the program is successful a method of measurement will be
I chose to focus reading with a first grade student. This student has missed a lot of school in the past and has moved around frequently. On the FAST assessment, this student scored at the bottom of all first graders. Reading is of high importance and an intervention in this area is in high need.
It is hard to believe that somewhere, just from exposure, she would have learned something. But, I think for a lot of people in poverty, they are mostly concerned with living and their basic needs. Unfortunately, reading isn’t one of them. “Illiteracy has become such a serious problem in our country that 44 million adults are now unable to read a simple story to their children” (The Literacy Project). When I was growing up, my parents were avid readers, thus I became one too. However, my twelve year old daughter is not. She has never read a book for pleasure and finds reading boring. It’s hard for me to fathom someone not having the desire to
I had the privilege of doing my middle school observation at Corkscrew Middle School. While I was there I observed a seventh grade language arts class. This school has a total student population of 726. Of those students 320 are White, 55 are Black, 325 are Hispanic, 3 are Asian, 15 are Multiracial, and 8 are Indian. Approximately 52% of the school’s student population are economically needy.

The event that I attended for the interpreter observation requirement was an event that occurred in the classroom and took place in order to provide interpretation for a guest speaker, Richard McGann, who was Deaf and blind. The event was held at the University of Pittsburgh during the Intro to Interpreting American Sign Language-English class taught by Jessica Adams on Tuesday, November 10th at 5:30PM and the interpreted lecture took place in a typical classroom located on the third floor of the Cathedral of Learning. The classroom used for the guest lecture was the same room that the class meets at regularly, so there had been no special modifications made in order to accommodate the
The general education teacher classified five of her students as on average readers, ten of her students as above average readers, and four of her students as below average readers.
Riley and his mother is outside having some outdoor fun and learning new things in his surroundings.
The way I would promote the next level of development for Milian is to talk about the fishes in the tanks, the colors and the sizes of the fish along with perhaps naming the fishes. Theodore is very close to his mother, and was near her or on her during my whole time there. I would encourage the mother to join me at the tank, and we can talk about the fishes with Theodore, and also bring other infants to the tank.
Teachers hold the role of inspiring and encouraging each of their students to strive for greatness and success with their academics and their future endeavors. Instructing students in the United States not only depends on specific school subjects but also involves efficiently structuring teaching methods for a diversity of students. Centralized subject pertaining to bilingual teachers, which are also known as ESL (English as a second language) teachers. All teachers that hold a bilingual certification require specific training to work with students who are dominant in a certain language and are transitioning into English. So if teachers hold a role of encouraging and involving every student, does the attitude and perception
