Christianity’s View of the Arts
In today’s society, many Christians have different views on what is knows as the “arts.” Modern arts consist of literature, drama, music, painting or drawing, and many other activities. Many Christian are divided on where they stand in association to the arts. While some Christians believe that the arts is a way of glorifying God, other Christians believe that the arts are unnecessary and a waste of time. Christians have to make a decision at a point in their life on where they stand in their view of art in the Church. Is there a legitimate place for arts in the Christian church or are the arts unnecessary? Christians need to come to a pure understanding on what the arts are, and make a spiritual decision on where they stand.
Jerram Barrs, a Professor of Christian Studies and Contemporary Culture, wrote an article entitled “Christianity and the Arts.” Through his article, he compares and contrasts the different viewpoints of the arts that Christians have. The first point that Barrs discusses in his article is that Christians should enjoy the arts because, God did indeed

One of the questions that is asked is, is Christian artists better than non-Christian artists? This question is purely flawed. God gifted everyone with unique gifts and talents alike. Barrs states in his article, “ Many believers speak as if it is impossible for the Christians to enjoy or to be edified by the creative works of unbelievers” (Barrs 9). Barrs explains that God gifts every person with unique gifts, not concerning whether or not they are saved. “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10” (NIV 2104). God loves every person equally, not more or less. While it is true that some non-spiritual art may not be ‘healthy’ for Christians to be around, Christians shouldn’t exclude “worldly” art from their
Berry points out that art comes does not birth something new rather “...it begins in other arts, in attitudes and ideas antecedent to any art, in nature, and in inspiration” (Berry 305). He also discusses how art should be used to bring glory to God.
“Art is the organized visual expression of ideas or feelings.” Pensacola Christian College has a great definition for fine art. Starting with the first major point what type of art is this definition referring to; this is the traditional mediums used, such as painting, sculpture, architecture, and drawings. I am thankful we use traditional mediums at this establishment; after doing some research and finding artists like Millie Brown that have used bodily fluids and I am completely disgusted at the pieces that were created. Art needs to be an “organized visual expression of ideas or feelings” showing a clear understanding of design principles and using them to communicate a message. By following this principle I have been able to make some fantastic pieces that can go into a portfolio. Even God has said in Corinthians 14:33 says “for God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints”. The background of this passage is all about communicating to the church, but as a Christian artist we can apply this to our work so we can edify others around us rather...
Art educates. This education can be both positive and negative but art can function as an educational tool that has lasting effects. A 2009 article in the New York Times titled: “Schools Adopt Art as Building Block of Education” indicates the growing acceptance of art functioning in education. In this article, the unique architecture of the building was used practically by students “measuring whimsical figures of hot-air balloons, paper airplanes and pinwheels built right into the walls of their school” (par. 1). The architecture also functioned as inspiration for further learning. In addition, the article documented the perspective of a four-year old child who proclaimed that “When you look at it, it helps you learn.” (par. 20) When Jeremiah looked at the image of heaven and hell he learned significant life lessons. This picture that was presented in residential school ...
Cultures all around the world are multi-faceted, comprising the values, morals, and beliefs of vast groups of people. One component that is woven into all cultures some way or another is art. Whether the art form is music, theatre, or visual art, all cultures value these art forms in different ways. Because of this, there have been some drastically opposing views from two of the greatest minds throughout time. Leo Tolstoy (Russian author of one of the most central works of world literature War and Peace) wrote What Is Art? it states if art is universally understood then it is good and has reason to be appreciated. However, Mo Tzu (a well known Chinese philosopher who wrote and debated political and social philosophy) wrote Against Music which expresses that art is disruptive to work and a waste of taxpayer money. Though the reasonings are enormously different, both have validity in their arguments.
Art, by definition, is “something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings”. Throughout history, one way that art has been used is to reflect a multitude of ideas and beliefs. Christian beliefs and ideas have been portrayed in artwork since the beginning of Christianity, although, it was not always acceptable to do so. The idea of the final judgement is a Christian idea that has been displayed in art repeatedly in a variety of ways. Michelangelo’s fresco the Last Judgment (1536-1541) is a piece that visualizes this idea. Since the time it was finished, this significant piece found in the Sistine Chapel has been continuously critiqued and analyzed. Many Christians struggle to interpret the event of a final judgment after reading it through Scripture. In analyzing Michelangelo’s piece, it is similar difficult to determine what he exactly meant to portray and what the various part of his masterpiece represent exactly. Many have examined this piece and made different regarding what exactly the various figures and objects are supposed to represent. The diverse interpretations of this work further shows the idea that when Christian ideas are reflected through artwork, it is hard to ascertain exactly what an artist intended to demonstrate. In addition, the controversies surrounding this piece represent the idea that when Christian ideas are revealed through art, there is potential for disagreement regarding what should and should not be included in Christian art. Michelangelo’s Last Judgment is just an example of what results when Christianity is brought into art.
Whether or not we notice it, Art is always around. It can come in the form of a beautiful painting in the Smithsonian Museum, a sculpture by Michelangelo, or as graffiti on the wall. Whatever the form, art is always present. Additionally, art is not new; for as long as there have been people, there has been art. Though rare, early Christian art manages to express, in picture form, a story from the bible. One piece, which was actual a mural painted in the fourth century, on walls of the mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Raveena, Italy, depicts Christ teaching his apostles. Just a few miles away in a Vatican City museum is a statue from the third century which also depicts Christ as the Good Shepherd.
As a music artist, I can say that I make music that reflects upon my own life, whether it is on how I grew up poor in a bad neighborhood, speaking about the government or just venting, the release is positive. I have no intent, nor do I negatively impact society in anyway that it stops us from flourishing. Being able to share your ideas and creativity with others brings people together, because it allows us to grow off of each other. Art “plays a vital role in transmitting and affirming the community's knowledge, lore, history, and values by contributing vitally to the creation of an environment in which individuals and their children can flourish, this being one in which there is mutual support and respect” (Davies 4). This whole idea of a congregation where there is moral support for one another shows how art helps establish a kind ground for growth.
They believe that even though gospels could be replaced by the secular books, ecclesiastical art could not be replaced. Even if they visit museums or galleries, it is difficult to find piece of art which brings agents to come up with any questions related to religion. To christians, art reveals that "other people are just altered versions of ourselves: fellow fragile, uncertain, flawed being likewise craving love and in urgent need of forgiveness" (pg.227). Christian art has a mission to spread God's words, virtues and vices. It also keep reminds modern society not to forget some important factors of life that could be easily forgotten such as love, hope and faith. De Botton holds that art galleries and museum could be transformed as a new form of church rather than just a place for showing impressive art pieces. Most arguments from this section were agreeable except for the part that the theme of Christian's ecclesiastical art is quite limited. This point of argument is not agreeable since the main goal of ecclesiastical art is to reveal how God saved us and how he created world. It is supposed to have curative powers for people who believe in God rather than painting a variety of different subjects. It should be reminded for most atheists that one of the ecclesiastical art's purposes is a therapeutic
A lot of people might be doubtful that art has much power to make the world a better place. If you asked they would probably summarize art as scribbles or
History plays a very important role in the development of art and architecture. Over time people, events, and religion, have contributed to the evolution of art. Christianity has become a very common and well established religion, however, in the past it was hidden and a few people would worship this religion secretly. Gradually, Christianity became a growing religion and it attracted many converts from different social statuses. Christian art was highly influenced by the Greco-Romans, but it was immensely impacted by the establishment of the Edict of Milan in the year 313 AD. The Edict of Milan was so significant that scholars divide Christian art into two time periods, time before and after the Edict of Milan of 313.
Art through the ages has been a powerful voice for both secular and religious ideas, and the treasury of Christian art should not be relegated to museum viewing. The art should be displayed in the church were it is meant to be. Its richness can be brought to people in schools and adult study groups. This, in turn, can help to bring art up to the level, that the faith deserves. Churches should fill the walls with art to show what happened throughout the bible. Art creates connections and associations between what we see and what we sense happened. Both ritual and art challenge us to take us beyond the immediate, if they are to bring about true insight and transformation in our lives.
The most influential theme in art for centuries was that of religion. There have been many things that have influenced art over the generations. Nothing has had the impact on the art world that religions has. Many of the ancient art works were dedicated to the gods or other religious figures. The statues of the Ancient Egyptians were not just for beauty. Instead, they were representations of the gods and were meant to have significant meaning to the people who saw them. The people of the time knew the meaning of every reed, flower, bird, or animal that was depicted in the art. The same is true of the Greeks and Romans. Most of the art was inspired by the gods and the mythology of the region. Art as a way of imparting a message dominates the art world. For most of history, art had a meaning that was often connected to the religion of the region. This is fitting since art has a sense of permanence that most other mediums do not possess.
What is Christianity and why has it been able to develop into a continuously growing and evolving religion?
A philosophy of Christian education encompasses many aspects that overlap areas of a child 's life that could not be nurtured and molded in a public school setting. Therefore, the Christian philosophy of education must include so much more. The Bible must be used as the basis for the education of children. A child should be taught in a way that will best benefit the individual that God created. He should be trained in his own way, the way he learns best. In order to do that, teachers must be able to assess their students in a manner that will reveal the learning styles that best fit each child. By doing this, the best possible education can be given to each student. Proverbs 22:6 states, "Train up a child in the way he should go..." The ways
The Creative Arts play a significant role in early childhood education as it provides children with a diverse range of skills to enhance their learning and development to meet the needs of succeeding in the 21st century. Educators can promote The Arts by adopting the Reggio Emilia approach to education, encouraging children to co-construct the curriculum to develop their skills in partnership with teachers, families and their cohorts. The focus of this essay is to emphasise the value of Creative Arts in early childhood education by providing a summary of the concepts and skills of the Creative Arts and the four strands; Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts. Then, ascertain how Creative Arts benefit children’s social development, language and
