I specifically chose child poverty as an issue to focus on because of an empowering ad I had seen on t.v that displayed exactly what happens to kiwi kids in our country. Child Poverty affects a lot of kiwi kids and needs to be ended to stop the most vulnerable people in the world from suffering these situations. Child poverty is when kids live in a household with low income and are not able to get as many opportunities and food as other kids their own age. These kids are able to afford warm clothes, food, warm house and even school supplies. Child is used in Poverty because it is showing to us that poverty is deeply affecting the vulnerable,the powerless and the innocent and that we all should realise that these children are the future of our nation,we should be making sure that they are well equipped and warm and have good healthy food to eat. Poverty causes children to be involved in illegal things such as drugs and crime and the people that are involved in these risky behaviours are children. If parents don’t have enough money to support their child, they will be forced to steal- this is linked back to education- if you are unable to earn a decent wage because of lack of education you will be forced to commit a crime. The recent video file by Bergsma touches on this issue with in depth. Bergsma has attempted to show and explain the unawareness of child poverty through a story. The story was about a guy who named Bobby and lives in poverty. Generally, the entire story was criticized from his perspective that how he experienced living in poverty and abandoned his life. In the video, Bergsma (2014) articulates that Bobby has faced hard time in his school life because he doesn’t eat proper and lead to inadequate of nutritious requirements. These all makes his school life worse resembling lack of concentrations and being bullied at school.

The poverty line has often been critiqued because of the way that it is applied without regard to other differences (Ferris & Stein 207). This episode entitled Poor Kids focused on the lives of three children battling poverty in America. The episode first began with 9-year-old Brittany Smith who lives with her 14-year-old brother Roger, her mother, and her father. The father has just lost his recent job, the family has no hot running water, and are on the verge of having their cable and internet turned off because of lack of payment. Poverty as we know it is not a new issue at all, but none the less it’s a crucial problem that plagues much of the world. So much so, that it’s been stated that three billion people live off of less than $2.50 each day (dosomething). Poverty is a debilitating state to be stuck in, it takes so much more from people than just from a financial aspect. Someone who’s suffering from poverty have higher chances of experiencing a medical problem. People in this economic state also have much lower odds at succeeding in important areas such as school or finding a job. Poverty does not use a narrow view, instead it plays effects on people in much wider variety than just financially.

This social disadvantage limits one’s ability to receive a quality education and it is a constant problem throughout the world accompanied with“deleterious impacts on almost all aspects of family life and outcomes for children”(Ravallion,1992). Child poverty is a major and complex issue that New Zealand faces today. The degree is far more severe than the public's perception and it is a problem that we cannot afford to ignore. A combination of factors contributes to child poverty, from individual causes at the micro level to the macro collective government involvement. This occurs partly due to social construction and it is potentially avoidable. The consequences can impact on both individual and to a great extent affect significantly on the country as a whole. If the issue is not resolved, the inequality will continue, if not worsen and becomes an ongoing intergeneration cycle. 'The poor get poorer and poorer', children can easily fall into the poverty trap where it becomes nearly impossible to reach an end to this issue.
