Jessie LaTasha Covington Concordia College Jessie The student I chose for this case study is a young boy, who I will call Jessie. He was observed in a classroom at an Early Childhood Learning Center. Jessie is a 3.6-year-old boy. He is the only child on his maternal side. Jessie has black curly hair, brown eyes and he seems to be the average height for his age range. Jessie basks in fun activities at the park, having books read to him and watching his favorite television program Bubble Guppies. Play is the major vehicle through which young children learn. Carlson (2011a) defines “big body play” as the boisterous, large motor, very physical activity that young children naturally seem to crave”. Jessie gross motor skills were satisfactory. He is able to run, jump, walk, hop on both feet and gallop. He stood on one foot, but could not hop. As he walked down the stairs, he was able to walk up and down using alternate feet. During outside play, Jessie was able to climb on the outdoor climbing equipment. Moreover, he can throw and is able to catch a ball if done at a short distance. According to the website BabyParenting.about.com, Motor skills are related to how your child uses his body. Pediatricians gauge development in two areas: Gross motor and fine motor skills. Gross motor skills use large muscle groups and are related to active play (Maureen Ryan, Toddlers and Twos Expert).
