Although some people may believe AI should be used in education, in reality, it should not because of deception and inaccuracy. Cheating in education is already a common issue that many professors face. It stunts the growth of cognitive skills that allow students to thrive in more advanced environments. Sean Glantz states, “ ‘...The reason we have them write papers isn’t for them to write papers. It’s really about building those skills around thinking.’ ” (Source C) Educators do not assign papers because they want to read hundreds of essays, they assign essays to build critical thinking skills that will develop the students’ brains and encourage depth in their learning. Furthermore, using AI is similar to cheating as it does not involve a student’s original ideas, nor does it challenge them mentally. The dishonesty and lack of effort that comes with students who use AI only reinforces that it should not be welcomed or used in academic settings. Not only does the use of AI lead to deception, it is also inaccurate. AI sources such as ChatGPT cannot understand the complex breakdown of prompts that have any deeper meanings or requirements. Ian Bogost states “ChatGTP’s...doesn’t make accurate arguments or express creativity, but instead produces textual material in a form corresponding with the requester’s explicit or implicit intent.” (Source E) ChatGTP can only pinpoint specific words and formulate essays from them. Therefore, if a student is assigned a specific essay about Rosa Parks, the AI bot only picks up on a historical figure instead of the actual point of the prompt, which may have been the figure’s hardships or accomplishments. While the essay should’ve been about MLK’s thoughts and opinions on racism and his actions to help stop it, ChatGTP wrote about COVID-19, economic downturn, and health outcomes. While these topics may have some correlation to MLK’s truths, they are not what the main focus of the essay was supposed to be. Therefore, the inaccuracy and lack of depth that comes from the use of AI fully demonstrates that it should not be used in schools or academic settings in general. While some people may argue that AI can be used as a tool, they are wrong because this “tool” is inaccurate and a tool of deception. Thus, it teaches students untrue information while also allowing them to be dishonest in their work and effort. Cost-benefit analysis is a systematic process for calculating and analyzing both the cost and benefit and then calculating which action is best for one to be involve in, actions such as; an activity, an decision, or an government policy and figuring out the benefits and costs of the project. One has to determine if the choice one is making is sound and that they would benefit from it rather than receiving zero gratification out of it. The cost of cheating in an University is that one will be on disciplinary probation, suspension, dismissal from Winthrop, and etc. Cheating is like a major crime in college. There are a few benefits from cheating include assuring one a good grade, with little work/studying required. However, the consequences of cheating and getting caught by a professor overweight any benefits that one might think cheating may have.
I will use this article’s arguments and logic in the counter argument section of my essay. I will address the arguments Boden utilizes and will mention the additional fears that are mentioned in the article. While dehumanizing aspects of artificial intelligence are not a great threat given artificial intelligence’s limitations, artificial intelligence will continue to advance. Meanwhile, the issue of humans depending too heavily on inaccurate information is a concern. Artificial intelligence cannot know everything, so decisions may not be as thought-out as humans. This article is unbiased, as it uses strong logical arguments without employing logical fallacies. One of the hottest topics that modern science has been focusing on for a long time is the field of artificial intelligence, the study of intelligence in machines or, according to Minsky, “the science of making machines do things that would require intelligence if done by men”.(qtd in Copeland 1). Artificial Intelligence has a lot of applications and is used in many areas. “We often don’t notice it but AI is all around us. It is present in computer games, in the cruise control in our cars and the servers that route our email.” (BBC 1). Different goals have been set for the science of Artificial Intelligence, but according to Whitby the most mentioned idea about the goal of AI is provided by the Turing Test. This test is also called the imitation game, since it is basically a game in which a computer imitates a conversating human. In an analysis of the Turing Test I will focus on its features, its historical background and the evaluation of its validity and importance.
The official foundations for "artificial intelligence" were set forth by A. M. Turing, in his 1950 paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" wherein he also coined the term and made predictions about the field. He claimed that by 1960, a computer would be able to formulate and prove complex mathematical theorems, write music and poetry, become world chess champion, and pass his test of artificial intelligences. In his test, a computer is required to carry on a compelling conversation with humans, fooling them into believing they are speaking with another human. All of his predictions require a computer to think and reason in the same manner as a human. Despite 50 years of effort, only the chess championship has come true. By refocusing artificial intelligence research to a more humanlike, cognitive model, the field will create machines that are truly intelligent, capable of meet Turing's goals. Currently, the only "intelligent" programs and computers are not really intelligent at all, but rather they are clever applications of different algorithms lacking expandability and versatility. The human intellect has only been used in limited ways in the artificial intelligence field, however it is the ideal model upon which to base research. Concentrating research on a more cognitive model will allow the artificial intelligence (AI) field to create more intelligent entities and ultimately, once appropriate hardware exists, a true AI.
The Dangers of AI Artificial intelligence has blown up in the past decade and will continue to expand as humanity grows. AI has revolutionized the education system in many ways, both negatively and positively. Now that AI has been created, what scares humans the most is how capable and quick it is without control. Although many people consider AI a quick response or accommodating tool helpful to education, the dangerous effects of AI such as dependence, dehumanization, and erosion of job roles outweigh the benefits. Cheating on academic work is a serious issue that most students admit to doing at some point in their academic career. Elite students are surprisingly the culprits of cheating, but hide it well. (Romm, para 5) Cheating is such a large issue that “70% of students from a sample of 1,800 from nine campuses said they had cheated at least once during their college careers.” (Schneider, para 9) Students cheat on academic work because of different, ongoing pressures in their lives. Understanding the student’s motives and pressures are essential to preventing cheating from occurring in the future. Students cheat for different reasons specific to them regarding their priorities, pressures and because of how easy it has become. Even though eliminating cheating will not happen, there are actions that educational professionals can and should take to prevent most of it from happening so often. Therefor cheating problems are minimized and have a positive impact on the student’s education and understanding of concepts.
