Charles Spurgeon said “Anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows, but only empties today of its strength.” I never really thought about this until I started high school. I didn’t really have social anxiety until high school. Whenever I was called on or we were in groups, I would get anxiety so I told my mom about it and asked if I could do online school. I never really had social anxiety until last summer. Whenever we went shopping or anywhere where there were a lot of people, I would get kind of scared or stay really close to my mom. When I started high school, it was even worse. I had a hard time looking people in the face and when we were in big groups I would cower behind. I only talked to my close friends and I even had a hard time raising my hand or talking to my teachers. I asked my mom if I could do online school and she said no. I would ask her every day and I probably annoyed her. My sister, Wyn, who has curly red hair and freckles, can be very persuasive, so asked her to talk to our mom about it. She would only do it if I gave her something. We went back and forth negotiating the price. “How about $2 if you …show more content…
talk to her and $5 if we can do it,” I would ask. “No, way. $10 if I talk to her and $15 if she says yes,” Wyn would counter. We kept going until it ended with $5 if she talked to her and $10 if she got her to let us. She ended up persuading her so we started to get all of the forms in and waited for our start day. My sister thought that I meant she would get $5 and $10 but I meant just $10.
We had a little argument. I gave her the $10 and that was it. I told all of my friends that I was switching to online school and they didn’t want me to leave they tried to make me change my mind but I really needed to go to online school. My friend, Duncan’s, sister goes to the same school that I signed up for so he told me a little about it. When we got our start date I was very excited to start online school because you can go at your own pace. At my old school I always finished all of my work before everyone and would just sit there until the end of class because there was nothing else to do. Sometimes I would read. Some days I would forget my book and just sit and wait for someone else to be done or just stare at the clock and wait for the class to be
over. On my first day I was kind of nervous because I didn’t know how it was going to work. It ended up being a lot easier than I thought it would be and I was able to complete all of my assignments and attend all of the class connects. I was kind of nervous during the class connects because I didn’t know the teachers and the students but they were all very nice and I was able to get through the day. It wasn’t exactly what I thought it would be but I liked it. I would like it a little more if I could work a little faster because I almost finished most of the assignments but they are not due so I have to wait for the rest of the class. Also I work better when I teach myself and I’m not a big fan of the class connects, but other than that I like it a lot. I learned a lot of different things during this experience: There’s always a solution to problems, even anxiety. Always be specific when negotiating. If at first you don’t succeed try again, and if you still don’t succeed, ask for help. Things aren’t always what you expect, but that can be a good thing. I will always remember this big change in my life.
Unless awareness is raised, serious problems regarding this issue will begin to emerge. A firm understanding of what exactly a social anxiety disorder is and what can cause it, the importance of addressing this issue, and potential treatments and the benefits of these treatments are all essential components of beginning to combat this issue and help better college students’ experiences.
Looking at a normal person walking down the street you wouldn’t know what kind of fear they might be facing. People face different fears in their lives that they can’t control. It is common for people to be scared of a situation that has a rationality behind it. For example, being scared while inside a haunted house. If the fear is irrational and many aren 't frightened by it, it would be categorized as a phobia. Social anxiety disorder can be defined as the persistent fear of one or more social or performance situations in which the person is exposed to unfamiliar people or to possible scrutiny by others, and where exposure to such situations provokes anxiety.
Having anxiety is common and a part of everyday life however; there is a huge difference between a fear and a social phobia or anxiety disorder. The difference and important distinction psychoanalysts make between a fear and a phobia is “a true phobia must be inconsistent with the conscious learning experience of the individual” (Karon 1). Patients with true phobias “do not respond to cognitive therapy but do respond well to psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapy” (Karon 2). Social phobia is a serious anxiety disorder that should not be taken lightly or mistaken as a fear you will simply grow out of the older you get. Social phobia has the power to destroy lives and can prevent people from living and enjoying their life to the fullest. Social phobia is a disabling condition that often starts between the ages of early childhood and late adolescence. The origins of social phobia can be linked to “traumatic social experiences and social isolation” (Hudson118-120). Social phobia is treatable however; research and statics show that not many seek help.

About 5.3 million American adults have social phobia, which usually begins in childhood or adolescence, according to NIMH. For many social phobics, preoccupation with what others think may interfere in their job, school, relationships or other social activities. "Everyday interactions can become very problematic for people with social anxiety disorder," (Dittmann, 2005). Recent update of Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) stated that about 15 million American adults have social anxiety disorder. 36 percent of people with social anxiety disorder report symptoms for 10 or more years before seeking help. Social anxiety goes from not being able to socialize with people in a class to never leaving home due to the anxiety that is causes. Markway’s article states that there are three categories involved with social anxiety; mental distress, physical distress, and how avoidance affects someone socially. Mentally, it is exhausting to talk to people for to people and have that constant anxiety about the way they talk and act. People with social anxiety often think about how they can humiliate and embarrass themselves in front of others. This drives someone to fear that they may do something wrong at any given moments and may be rejected altogether (“Markway”, 2013).
Well the truth is it might not but that doesn’t mean it isn’t effecting someone a lot closer to you. Anxiety doesn’t choose its victims. Anyone can struggle with this disorder whether it be the neighbor down the street or your own significant other. Unfortunately there has been a social stigma around anxiety and other mental health disorders that attributes these feelings to being a “drama queen” or “making a big deal out of nothing”. Would you say these phrases to someone with a broken limb or even the simple stomach flu? Of course not. Then why say it to someone with anxiety? Some people fail to understand that just because you are not personally suffering from the disorder or you can not see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t real. This negative attitude towards anxiety has caused more harm than good and has resulted in some students refusing to seek out help. I was thirteen years old when a teacher told me, “ Anxiety is a false disorder, stop crying and get over it.” those words are forever burned into my mind. Because of that teacher I never sought help, because of that teacher I felt weak and pathetic. By dismissing anxiety as a fake disorder, you are contributing to the stigma that has led to many panic attacks in counselor offices. By telling someone with anxiety to “toughen up”, you are really breaking them down. Instead of these negative statements, we need to as a society need to focus on the treatment options for these individuals, especially college students. There are many different treatment options, from medication to traditional therapy, aside from these two choices, some universities have also started introducing emotional therapy dogs. Although, the majority of college campuses have established mental health counseling centers free for students through tuition costs but there is still a demand for more facilities. At UCF, their counseling center couldn’t handle the rapid increase of patients
Butterflies, the perfect word to describe anxiety. Everyone on this planet will experience anxiety once or more times in their life. No one can avoid anxiety, except for those who live life boring. I myself have experienced anxiety many times throughout my high school career. High school life is a major reason for many mental break downs, and lost nerves.
Do you know what it feels like to have your palms sweat, throat close up, and your fingers tremble? This is the everyday life of someone who lives with anxiety. As soon as I wake up in the morning, I hear my brain freaking out about the day ahead of me. What do I eat for breakfast? What do I do first when I get home from school? What happens if I get in a car crash on my way to school? A million thoughts at one time racing through my head. I never have the time to process all of them. Most mornings, I lay in my bed and have to take a few deep breaths to begin my hectic but not so hectic day. That’s just the beginning. It’s safe to say that I feel that I 'm an anxious person and that I have an anxiety disorder.
Almost every day throughout high school I experienced something that I could not identify. It was over a year since I had graduated until could put words to emotion. I discovered that I was not free in my own mind. I was in a prison. One that I couldn't touch and for many years I could not see. After several visits to counselors and therapists I finally had the words to describe what my experience was.
There are many different perceptions about people with social anxiety. People who do have it are often seen by others as just being shy, aloof, constrained, unfriendly, uneasy, quiet, indifferent, or diffident. The people who are afflicted with social anxiety may be clouded by these perceptions as well, so they may fail to seek treatment. Because the problem is generally unheard of, they may think that they are the only ones who suffer from it. People who do seek treatment are misdiagnosed 90% of the time, often labeled as "personality disorder", "manic depressive", or "schizophrenic", among other things. This is because social anxiety is not well understood by the general public, or medical or health care professionals. They are not even sure of the real cause of it or what it stems from.
All of us at one point in our life have had a fear of something, whether it’s public speaking, trying something new for the first time, or even presenting just like we're all going to be doing. I'm sure most of us will be nervous and we try our best to get rid of that feeling. Some people have Social anxiety which is known as social phobia. It is the fear of social interaction with other people and of being judged and looked down upon. It can also be a fear of embarrassment. This leads to feelings of inadequacy, self-consciousness, and depression. Social anxiety is an issue that affects many individuals as it should be taken more seriously and should not be considered as a weakness. For over three years, I have suffered from social anxiety disorder and shattered my social life in the process. Social anxiety disorder, also known as social anxiety or social phobia, is a psychiatric disorder where the sufferer has a fear of being in social situations, and is unable to interact with other people. This might appear as bashfulness to those that lack understanding of the problem. However, this is a problem that is much more severe than that. Social anxiety has the potential to ruin peoples’ lives. By fearing other people, you become unable to communicate with them, and therefore you are unable to live a normal, everyday lifestyle.
In life, everyone gets anxious. You might be nervous about giving a speech, or maybe you're worried about taking a test. That usually lasts for only a few moments, and then you move on. For me, however, anxiety is constant. To me, anxiety is the largest obstacle I have ever had to overcome on my educational journey.
