Shelder (2010) describes seven distinguished features of Psychodynamic approach compared to other available therapy forms in his review: focus of effect in relation to client’s express of emotions; understanding resistance in terms of avoidance of important topics and/ or distracting behaviors in therapy sessions; exploring client’s patterns in terms of behaviors, reasoning, emotions, experiences, and connections to others; bringing in the client’s past; examining relational factors and dealings; highlighting the importance of therapy, and bringing in dreams, wishes, or fantasies for exploration. In a closer view of some these distinguished therapy techniques described by Shelder (2010), we can infer that the established patterns in behaviors, …show more content…
In another technique applied in Psychodynamic therapy approach where a client’s past is brought in, psychodynamic therapists’ main goal is to understand or relate the past with the present. Furthermore, the therapists also seek to illustrate to the client how his or her past can claim its position in the present (Shelder 2010). According to his review, it is important then to understand that the only purpose the past can have in the therapy is to illuminate the current psychological issues. The Ultimate goal in Psychodynamic therapy approach is assisting the individuals in parting from the negatives of past and helping him or her transitioning to a life that is more …show more content…
Moreover, according to the report, the benefits of the therapy concept are also showing to last beyond termination of the therapeutic process. In many ways one can appreciate that this report can validate Shelder’s (2010) eight meta- analyses as well as his nine meta-analyses of other psychological therapies with the use of antidepressant prescriptions. These reported meta-analyses can show that psychodynamic therapy can have substantial treatment
Catharsis and working through are also important concepts for therapy. Psychodynamic therapists believe that patients must relive past feelings to overcome their problem in the future. To go along with catharsis, working through would be needed over many years to examine the same issues.
Cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) mainly focuses on the present of the client whereas Psychodynamic therapy largely focuses on the past of the client. I personally think that even though the past of the client may be responsible for his/her present condition, the problems affect clients’ daily routine. Therefore the focus of the therapy must target client’s present conditions. I find this interesting because unlike Psychodynamic therapy, CBT enables the therapist to become aware of clients’ immediate problems. It is significant because this may affect the client in such a way that he/ she might have to rely on therapist’s interpretation of their unconscious thoughts. For instance, CBT therapist might ask the client about past incidences if they are relevant to the therapy however the major focus will be on how the client’s current situation is affected. I believe that it is more effective

The modern world of today, psychologists have drifted away from the popularity of the psychodynamic therapy is use. Considering that many still use portions within their professional practice currently, it would seem appropriate to conclude the value and worth of psychodynamic theory in psychological work. Generally speaking, those practicing cognitive-behavior theory are applying a blend of the psychodynamic theory within their psychological efforts.

Cognitive behavioral therapy earliest inventors were behaviorist, such as Skinner, Watson, and Pavlov. They’re the ones who led to the advancement for behavioral treatment of mental disorders. Behavioral modification is a technique that uses positive and negative reinforcements to change a particular behavior and reaction to a stimulus. Behavioral therapist only focused on an individual’s behavior not their thoughts. During this era, psychologists applied B.F. Skinner’s radical behaviorism to clinical work. Much of these studies focused on chronic psychiatric disorders, such as autism and psychotic behavior. His methods also focus...
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a method of correcting invalid thought patterns to a more positive view of the person and their place in their world. Some people do not believe that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a real treatment for depression, claiming it is a form of positive thinking ("The Daily Mail," 2009). On the opposite end of the spectrum, others argue that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy should be used in all therapies for depression as it allows the patient to take an active role in their treatment. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the benefit of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as a viable treatment of depression, either as a stand-alone therapy or in conjunction with other therapies.

The psychodynamic theory encompasses both Freud and Erikson. Freud believed the three components of personality were the id, the ego, and the superego. The id is responsible for all needs and urges, while the superego for ideals and moral. The ego moderates between the demands of the id, the superego, and reality. However, Erikson believed that personality progressed through a series of stages, with certain conflicts arising at each stage. Success in any stage depended upon successfully overcoming these conflicts. The advantage to psychodynamic is that it encompasses the individual, meaning that the theory looks at personality from childhood all the way into adulthood. The disadvantages of this theory are that it cannot be tested validly. Therefore,
