Brett Shannon is a Director of Retail Operations and has worked at many hotels in Las Vegas including Excalibur, Luxor and MGM Grand International. In total, he has worked and gained around 17 years of retail experience. The focus of his lecture was centered on the idea of Coach Centric Leaders, and the 12 talents that define them. These 12 talents can be divided into three general talents: leadership, involvement, and energy. Since Coach Centric Leaders are originally leaders, they possess qualities that every general leader has. Just like every leader, they think outside the box. Coach Centric Leaders have an acute awareness of themselves and others. They don’t allow anyone to define who they are, and know that everyone is unique. That is why they know that every person has a valuable opinion and deserves to be heard and respected. As a result of this, these types of leaders are easily approachable, confidently humble, build trust, and believe in service. They understand that the more they serve, the greater the impact they have on others. As leaders, they have a lot of power, but by staying humble and confident, these people have extraordinary focus on their visions and goals, therefore aligning their strat3egies, plans, actions, and teams. They keep their focus on one key initiate to undertake and achieve, and know that there is power behind collective efforts and resources. This is why they also take the time to challenge perceptions and interpretations of others. Coach Centric Leaders know that every person is unique and interprets and perceives things differently due to their different backgrounds. If I take the time now to try and build on these 12 talents, it will be easier for me in my career to lead and inspire those around me. Being a Coach Centric leader ensures that I will be able to get things done, and involve and inspire everyone around me as we work together. To me, leadership isn’t about being able to tell people what to do and have them listen to me. Like Shannon said, it’s about taking every opportunity to inspire and impact every person you encounter in a positive way. I want to be the kind of leader that is respected not only because of my work, but because of the overall positive impact on the company and those around me. There have been countless books, lectures, and and trainings, and retreats constructed around the idea of cultivating leadership in an individual. However, cultivating individuals’ ability to follow great leadership has received far less attention. Who are these people leading if each person within an organization is being trained to be a leader? The word follower has negative connotations, evoking the images of a weak, uncreative, milquetoast personality. However, Jimmy Collins, in his book, “Creative Followership: In the Shadow of Greatness”, suggests that the ability to be led brings as much creativity, consciousness, and indeed leadership to an organization or team as the leader himself.
Most people think that being a leader is all about prestige, loyalty, or fame. While being a leader certainly is a great confidence and social status booster, there is more to being a leader than these. Being a leader requires passion, dedication, time, effort, and most importantly hard work. I would like to make myself believe that leaders are made and not born and that hard work can spell the difference between an immature and a holistically effective leader. The objective of this paper is to discuss by knowledge, belief system, and perception of leadership in relation to Bleachers by John Grisham which outlines the leadership story of Coach Eddie Rake and how he handled his team through thick and thin and through the greatest leadership challenges, towards success; to outline which character in the story I see myself in; and to characterize what type of leader I want me to be not in the future, but as early as now.
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
They have profound convictions for for their leadership; Their behavior always reflect their core values and they view themselves as individuals that “lead with their hearts as well as their heads while also building enduring organizations” (George 2003). Leaders are encouraged to maintain the perception of authenticity but making sure that their words are consistent and reflect their action or intentions. They should not be so pompous and arrogant that they cannot relate to or find mutual and common ground with their staff. (Goffee & Jones 2005)
“Leaders instill respect for authority by having a caring attitude, by being direct, by communicating regularly and by being honest!” (Mike Krzyzewski). The book “Leading with the Heart,” is one about leadership, how you earn it, how you practice it, and how you are to use it to make your organization a successful one. As a college basketball player, I learned that being an effective leader did not mean that I had to be a constant bundle of energy. Rather, I realized over time it is more important to understand your teammates and what makes them tick, and to translate that knowledge into separate leadership styles to match each individual. This is crucial when working with an extremely diverse group of attitudes, personalities, and mindsets. This person who is a leader will guide those in the organization by influencing, guiding, giving direction, and opinions (Marquis & Huston, 2012). The culture as well as the climate of an organization begins with the leadership (Azaare & Gross, 2011). Each individual person has their own leadership style. Knowing one’s own leadership style will help them understand themselves and be able to grow as a leader. The purpose of this paper is to look at my own leadership style, including my strengths for leading others. Being a leader you need to be in tune with your talents, strength’s, and weaknesses. Personally I feel I have many skills and talents. I am a great friend, I’m trustworthy and dependable. I can step up to the plate if needed and I can take control of certain situations without being told to. I love writing and being able to express my feelings or thoughts through writing and poetry. Along with my talents and skills I also have weaknesses. Knowing your weaknesses is twice as important as knowing your strengths in my opinion. One weakness of mine is being motivated. Once I start a task I will finish it and put 150% effort into it, but actually starting the task is my problem. Another weakness of mine is change.
